Bush Says Israel Defeated Hezbollah

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - President Bush, just hours after a cease-fire took hold Monday, said Hezbollah guerillas had suffered a sound defeat at the hands of Israel in their monthlong Mideast war.

"There's going to be a new power in the south of Lebanon," Bush said, referring to plans for the Lebanese government, backed by an international force, to reassert control in the area that has been dominated by Hezbollah fighters.

The president also said the war was part of a broader struggle between freedom and terror, and he blamed Iran and Syria for fomenting the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

"We can only imagine how much more dangerous this conflict would be if Iran had the nuclear weapon it seeks," the president said.

Bush said Iran and Syria were the primary sponsors of Hezbollah guerrillas who captured two Israeli soldiers, igniting the battle with Israel. More than 900 people were killed in the fighting, and there was massive destruction in southern Lebanon.

Bush said the "responsibility for this suffering lies with Hezbollah."

The president spoke at the State Department after conferring with his national security team, first at the Pentagon and then at State. He was flanked by Vice President Richard Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Bush said the U.N. cease-fire resolution was "an important step forward that will help bring an end to the violence."

"We certainly hope the cease-fire holds," he said. "Lebanon can't be a strong democracy when there is a state within a state and that's Hezbollah."

"Hezbollah attacked Israel, Hezbollah started the crisis, and Hezbollah suffered a defeat in this crisis," the president said. "The reason why is, this is because there's going to be a new power in the south of Lebanon, and that's going to be a Lebanese force with a robust international force to help them seize control of the country."

"It will take time for people to see the truth, that Hezbollah hides behind innocent civilians," Bush said.

In the Mideast, there were competing claims about who came out on top in the war.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the war had shifted the strategic balance in the region and eliminated the "state within a state" run by Hezbollah, restoring Lebanon's sovereignty in the south.

But Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said his guerrillas achieved a "strategic, historic victory" against Israel.

Bush, taking questions from reporters on a variety of topics, said the United States still believes that al-Qaida was behind last week's disrupted plot to blow up U.S.-bound airliners from Britain.

"It sure looks like it. ... It looks like the kind of thing al-Qaida would do," he said. But he said the United States has not made a definite conclusion about the sponsorship of the plan.

Asked if there might be any U.S.-based participants, Bush said, "Any time we get a hint that there might be a terror cell in the United States, we move on it."

While Bush praised the Mideast cease-fire, he said Israel would have the right to defend itself if it were attacked by Hezbollah.

"We don't advise Israel on its military options," the president said. "As far as I'm concerned, if somebody shoots at an Israeli soldier ... Israel has a right to defend herself. They have the right to suppress that kind of fire."

Bush rejected criticism that the United States was slow to support a cease-fire and allowed the violence to continue.

"You know it's going to be a painful process," the president said. "Diplomacy can be a painful process."

He said that if a resolution had been reached quickly without addressing the root causes, then "everybody would have felt better for a quick period of time. Then the violence would have erupted again."

Anyone remember May 2nd, 2003 when he declared "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq? I don't think he's a very reliable source for determining victory.

May Allah (swa) protect the world from any more of his "victories" until 2009!

I was gonna say the same thing. His speeches have really gotten kind of humorous lately. Claiming victory, when "we" (or our "allies") get our/their butts kicked - it just makes him a laughing stock.

Yeah I don't see any real winner in this conflict. The only victory I see for Hezbollah is a propaganda victory.

Hezbollah put up a fierce and tough resistance, but what did they get out of this other than praise and respect?

First of all, the Zionists are behind the blue line (were they were when they started) and the only part of South Lebanon they are still in is the Shibaa Farms and the 7 villages which were occupied before this conflict began.

Basically, they came in, were fought to a standstill, got a beating, killed civilians, and then retreated shamefully with their defeated tails between their legs.

Second of all, here are Olmert's grand proclimations about what the Zionist army was going to acheive through its war:

Olmert grand proclimation #1: We are going to disarm Hezbollah millitarily.

Olmert grand proclimation #2: We are going to hold a security zone from the blue line to the Litani.

Olmert grand proclimation #3: We are going to destroy Hezbollah's rocket arsenal.

Olmert grand proclimation #4: We are going to banish Hezbollah from South Lebanon.

Olmert grand proclimation #5: We are going to take out Hezbollah's leadership.

Olmert grand proclimation #6: We are going to stop Al-Manar from broadcasting.

Olmert grand proclimation #7: We are going to retrieve the two rescued soldiers.

Olmert grand proclimation #8: We are going to (get this) restore the status of the "invincible" IDF.

Olmert grand proclimation #9: To create an atmosphere of animosity against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Fact #1: Not only was Hezbollah NOT disarmed millitarily, and they are capable of carrying out years of the same kind of confrontation that they met the Zionist agression with, and they caused the Zionist millitary more casualties that they received. And they did this with a portion of their men, without calling on their reserves.

Fact #2: At the end of their campgain, the Lebanese people returned to their villages and homes brandishing Hezbollah's and Lebanon's flag after the Zionists shamefully retreated back to the blue line with their tails between their legs. They hold NO security Zone, and did NOT reach the Litani through their ground invasion.

Fact #3: Hezbollah still has a massive rocket arsenal at its disposal, and the Zionists were not capable to effect or hinder its usage by Hezbollah.

Fact #4: Hezbollah is still in South Lebanon and the combined armies of the world cannot and will not remove them.

Fact #5: No one from Hezbollah's leadership was killed.

Fact #6: Although the IDF destroyed over 15,000 buildings in Lebanon and leveled what was prevously Al-Manar's main site including every single broadcasting station they could find, Al-Manar never stopped broascasting.

Fact #7: Not only did the Zionists fail to get back the two soldiers, but they have soldiers missing in Lebanon which Hezbollah probably captured as well.

Fact #8: Hezbollah litterarly crushed the myth of the "invincible" Zionist army and rendered their forces little more than cowardly featherweights and criminals, whose only purpose serves to kill civilians and terrorize and oppress and destroy infrastructure.

Fact #9: Not only are Shias in Lebanon supporting Hezbollah and with pride and honor and dignity as strongly as ever, even those who once were neutral or even hated Hezbollah at one point in Lebanon have united and stood behind Hezbollah's banner in its support. Even among the Maronites, 80% now support Hezbollah. Hebollah succeded in uniting Lebanon when the Zionists tried to divide it.

Hezbollah sucessfully not only stood up to the Zionists and fought them to a standstill with inferior means, numbers, and weapons, but also made the Zionist war as costly as possible in terms of losses and has become the pride and honor of the Arab and Muslim world.

When everyone else faltered, Hezbollah stood up and resisted invasion, occupation, threat, and terror, and have brought yet another victory to a long line of victories in the face of this cowardly Zionist enemy. Their deeds are already being eulogised by poets.

What can we expect from the leader of the Great Satan :shaytan: ? Of cause, proclaimed victory to another smaller satan :shaytan: .

Killed innocents, destroyed buidling, put terror in the heart of children...and told the whole world "We did this under the names of war on terrorism, democracy, justice and freedom"...THIS IS THE LOGIC OF SATANs. Their words are deceptive, but their actions show who they really are.

If the smaller satan was victorious, the Great Satan would have said "Bravo...let us DO the job of finishing up Syria and Iran and tell the whole muslims and oppressed people, we are the LORD of the world"

More loyal than the king?

The idiot should've consulted with his Zionist masters first. The Zionist foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, grilled Olmert in Knesset today as to why none of "Israel"'s objectives were achieved after more than one month.

It gives me shudders to think that this idiot has his finger on the largest (and most used) nuclear arsenal in the world.

Bush has a history of schizophrenic apparitions, this must be another one. If this is a win, as I have said before, it is the most pyrrhic victory I have ever seen or read about. The US may have just lost the Middle East for a long time and their vision of a Democratic Middle East will turn into a nightmare when the Brotherhood and other Islamic Republicans sweep into office.

Uh Huh  , Please consider The UN and Lebanese Military is marching into what was formerly controlled Hezzie territory. They will no longer have free reign and they have left Lebanon in shambles. Expended are the ten years worth of stockpiling weapons and administrative compounds in Beirut for what? Pain and grief for the Lebanese people.

I have stated this before: look around. Have you noticed something? Perhaps people in Arabia or Egypt protesting against their government? The people of Cairo held up pictures of Nasser and Nasrallah. The Hizb'Allah have become the hope of the Arab world against the Zionist aggressors. The US and Zionists lost all chance in the Middle East due to this war, not only that, their allies have lost their legitimacy and now stand face-to-face with their own people. A Democratic Middle East will mean a Pro-Hizb'Allah Middle East. If the Americans and their allies truly did win this battle, it is increasingly evident they have sacrificed the war for it and for what? A temporary pat on the back, and what good is that when the fires grow around you?

Besides, there is no saying that Hizb'Allah will disarm at all. The Lebanese army may be there, but they cannot suppress Hizb'Allah in anyway without causing more sectarianism, so they will stand-by and allow an armed Hizb'Allah as always. As for arms, the Hizb'Allah has many weapons left and they now have more allies than ever. They are no longer just a Shi'a party, they are now a part backed by the Arab world and Muslim world.

The UN is going in, agreed?

UN Resolution 1559 calls for the disarmament of Hezz.

See the trend?

Yeh I see a trend. A trend that Israel continues to disregard all UN resolutions which call for its withdrawal from occupied territories both in Lebanon and Palestine. Whist Israel continues to neglect such 'commands' WHICH ARE INCLUDED IN 1559 - the Lebanese people will consider this pathetic resolution as insignificant.

Whilst the UN continues to be nothing but a tool serving US-Israeli interests, incapable of publicly condemning the murder of their own staff, let alone bring 'peace' to Lebanon, WE WILL CONTINUE TO RESIST.

Blatant hypocrisy, favouritism and incompetence to fulfil its 'declared' obligations to all peoples of the world have proven yet again in Lebanon, that the UN is a useless imperialist instrument, hiding behind the pretext of international peace and justice.

See the trend??????
