Salaam,

Just wanted to know whether anyone have any available rulings on rice wine, which are normally used to cook Japanese (the rice wine is called Mirin) and Chinese food.

I understand that rice wine is different from rice vineger, so any rulings on the permissibility of rice wine would be much appreciated.

Was salaam.

As salam alaykum,

Akhi, you need to refer to a scholar on this one. The scholars' rulings on wines used in food refers to wine from the grape. It does not cover wine from dates, rice, etc. You can check any risalah from any marja on that.

Djibril

As a sidenote, all the traditions from our Holy Aimmah (as) only refer to wine from the grape but not wine from other substances.

Salaam,

Thanks Brother, I've already sent my question to Ayatollah Seestani's office. But I was just checking in case someone else had received an answer for this question.

Based on my limited knowledge, rice wine shouldn't be najis, as it is made from rice and not grape nor kurma. But then again, I might be wrong, as there may be an Ishkal on it being najis as well.

Please find attached the response from Ayatullah Seestani's office on the permissibility of using rice wine for cooking.

Was salaam.

Why cant they ever get to the point???

We know intoxicants are haram , and we refer to YOU our scholars to ask whether rice wine is intoxicating thus haram , and your office replies with the same question which was in mind

Never refer to Ayatullah Sistani's site for that matter when it comes to medicine , their office will just say If it is ...., then .... , which was the question . I wanted an answer not a blank statement . And what is worse we have to wait for a month to get this statement .

Ayatullah Sistani has to impose stricter laws on his office and also include an islamic scientist group so they can be referred to

Ayatullah Sistani in my opinion is the most learned , however his office do not do good enough in giving out this information

Wassalam

As salaam alaykum,

There is no fault in Ayat. Seestani's office. Mirin is low alcohol, but alcohol itself is an intoxicant. If you drink enough mirin, you'll get drunk. THe food is probably halal because it isn't najis since it's derived from rice instead of grapes (I'm guessing here) and with the low amount of alcohol and the small amount used in cooking, you're stomach would probably explode before you could eat enough to get drunk.

I think that sometimes we want our marja's to do the thinking for us. It's a blessing that rulings are often so broad, there is nothing wrong with doing things according to your own comfort level within the confines of what is halal.

Rather than asking Seestani why don't you just look at the Quran and see what the Prophet peace be upon him said in this regard. The Quran says that Islam was completed at the time of the Prophet. Therefore everything you need is in the Quran. You just need to look. It does not matter what Seestani say, it matter what your creator says. On the day of judgement when you stand before your creator, you will be judged on what the Quran says not what Seestani says. For 1400 years Muslims of all sects have accepted that all intoxicants are haram.

The Quran says Al-Baqara 2:219

They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say "In them is great sin and some profit for men but the sin is greater than the profit.

Quran Al Maeda 5:90

O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling (dedication of) stones and (divination by) arrows are an abomination of Satan's handiwork: Eschew such abominations that ye may prosper

Al-Maeda 5:91

Satan's plan is but to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling and hinder you from the rememberance of God and from pray will ye not then refrain

The Prophet peace be upon him was also asked these question. The Prophet appointed Abu Musa Al Ashari as a governor in a part of yemen where they used to prepare Al Bit an alcoholic drink made from honey and Al Mizr an alcoholic drink made from Barley and he asked the Prophet about these. The Prophet told him "All intoxicants are prohibited" All the old Sunnis and the Shia books agree with this. This has been accepted by all Muslim for the last 1400 year this hadith is also in Sahih Al Bukhari Vol V Hadith 631

Umm yeah akhi khamr means fermented fruit juice since rice is not a fruit and a scholar has used the general indication from hadith that every intoxicant is khamr the haramness of intoxication would be carried if the marja says in his opinion it is so.

Drinking alcohol, which according to experts is a poisonous substance, is forbidden if it is in an amount that is likely to be harmful to the body.

From here, it becomes clear why some of the Most High Taqlid authorities (Marjas) , although it is said that there is a small amount of alcohol in some drinks, which is neither harmful nor intoxicating; They rule that drinking them is pure and halal.

Pay attention to the following questions and answers:
A question from Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi :

Beers that have 5 to 8 percent alcohol in one liter; In no way  it cause drunkenness, it does not destroy the intellect, and it does not create imbalance and change of state in a person. Is it also haram to consume this type of drink, which is not considered to be drunkenness?

His answer:

Alcohol may be present in a small amount in many food products, but as long as it is not naturally intoxicating or its harm is not proven, it will not be sanctioned, and it is the responsibility of food experts to prove this.

Question from Ayatollah Sistani :

In some foods such as confection, a small amount of alcohol is used, which has a processing role and is not intoxicating. Can it be used?

His answer: It is permissible.

From what I find quickly it says rice wine has 10 to 20% alchole content. This seems to me if that is correct to what you have as an intoxicating beverage hence it is not allowed to consume it a small amount of liquid of what In large amount intoxicates is not allowed to consume.

As for najasaat of it scholars  scholars differ on this issue.

If ones marja ruled it as Tahir and it was so minute level like it dosent exist like 0.02% those scholars would consider that permissible to consume however you must know that before being allowed to consume it.
