assalam alaikom

You should only do istikhara when you can't decide on a lawful matter, it shouldnt be done for everything. Allah (swt) has given us a brain to use so we can decide on certain issues what to do, if we cant decide what to do, we should then do istikhara.

Questions put to Sayed Sistani:

السؤال:نطلب رايكم بالاستخارة ؟

الجواب:المتيقن من مشروعية الاستخارة مورد التحّير بعد الاستشارة

http://www.sistani.org/istifta_/view_s.php...1577;&num=7121&

Q:We seek your opinion on Istikhara?

A: What is certain in legislated istikhara is (its use) at time of confusion/uncertainty after consultation/seeking advice.

السؤال:ما رأيكم في الاستخارة ؟

هل يستحب عملها على كل حال ؟

الجواب:لا بأس بها في موارد التحيّر وبعد المشورة و التفكير في الأمور المهمة

Q: What is your opinion on Istikhara? Is it recommended to be used whatever the case may be?

A: There is no haram in it when there is confusion/uncertaintly, and after seeking advice and thinking about/contemplating the important matters.

if you reach 50/50 on something and cant decide, then you consult a scholar, and if you still can't then you get istekhara.

Istikhara with Quran, Beads, Paper Drawing etc is the final step that one should take in making a decision and it should be done after seeking the best from Allah (swt).

"The actual meaning of the word Istikhara is to seek the best from Allah in one's affairs, which is not only commendable, but is also highly recommended (mustahab) in Islam"

The other meaning of Istikhara is when a person is perplexed and confused whether to perform an act or not (if that act is not something ordered by Allah (swt)) and our Intelligence cannot decide whether it is good or bad. Instead of guessing what to do, one can rely on Allah (swt) for seeking the best decision.

Also, one is not guaranteed good after doing Istikhara. The hadiths indicate that whoever asks good from Allah (swt), he will be granted good, whether in this world or the hereafter.

We must always make sure that we act to the best of our capability to determine what the right decision is through seeking advice, rationalizing and investigating before we make the decision to do Istikhara (by Quran or beads etc.)

Istikhara does not inform us of the future or of knowledge which is hidden by Allah (swt), rather, it simply provides satisfaction of the heart and removes doubt and uncertainty.

If Istikhara is done for the wrong reasons, it can prove to be damaging and destructive.

For more information please read Istikhara: Seeking the Best from Allah (swt) (I took out all my information from there)

Salam Alaikum,

Suppose, in a matter, after satisfying or fulfulling all the religious needs, like the matter should be Halaal etc, If there are two ways you can choose and You are not sure about which way to choose but you have reached a thought after using your reasoning and logic and seeking consultation from the poeple who might help, that the one way is lesser better than the other and you can now choose the other way. But your inclination is towards the way which has been proved to be lesser better and now only due to this, if you do the Istekhaara, it does not serves its purpose.

Only if you are 50/50 in some matter, as the previous post on this thread says, then you can do an Istekhaara and God-Willing He will help.

Hope that helps

You should do it for one question just one time and if you are not satisfied do it after three days (in this three days you should give sadaqa) again. then accept the answear and dont do it again.

By the way, there is a nice book about it called: Isthiahra, seeking the best from Allah
