Best Translation of Qur'an for Shi'is

Hello my fellow brothers and sisters..i've been reading the forums for quite sometime however this will be my first post!

I would like to ask what is everyones opinion on the best translation of the Qur'an in english for non-arabic speaking people such as myself?

I have read many other ones such as ones from Yusuf Ali and Muhammad Asad, however i see differences between those and ones I have from back home in Iran.

ANy recommendations?

The Best Translation of Quran in English has been done by Late Allama Zeeshan Haidar Jawwadi of India.

His translation is a combined book which contains, first the actual Quran (Arabic) followed by Urdu Translation, followed by English Translation.

Shakir's translation is a Shia, modern - no archaic words! - translation. I like it better than any other famous ones.

Wow Allamah Jawadi translated it into English as well? That's cool.

the absolute best English Shia translation available is the one by Sayyid Ali Quli Qara'i. It was first published by the Shia Institute in London, Islamic College for Advanced Studies.

why is it so difficult to get urdu translated Quran by shia scholars? while translated by non shia scholars are much easier to approach.

The best tafseer of Quran is by Allamah Mohammad Hussain Tabatabai. It has been translated in Urdu and English. The approach is  to explain Quran with Quran. It is the best of Tafseer amongst the Shia Tafseer. The translation is available at different Shia forums on  the net.

In response to the OP, I think we must first clarify what we mean by 'the best'. I can see at least two interpretations of 'the best translation into English':

1. The most literary translation (to reflect the style of the original), or

2. The most scholarly translation (to reflect the literal meaning of the original).

Ignoring all other factors, the most literary translation at present is undisputably that of J.M. Roswell, though it does contain mistranslations and if you get a version with the original footnotes, you will find them to be quite anti-Muslim (his motivation for translating it was for Christian missionary work). In spite of its weaknesses, his remains popular among non-Muslims owing to its style which is reminiscent of the King James Bible.

Of course even a literary translation must be correct, but I have not found a single other translation yet coming close to Rodwell's in its style, thus essentially giving his a monopoly on literary translations until now. We can only hope for a future committee of Muslim scholars creating a revised version of his classic translation (while leaving what is already correct untouched) without losing its style, if we are ever to succeed in moving non-Muslimd away from Roswell's.

As for a scholarly translation, Pickthall's seems to me to be the most literal. It is not at all elegant and is somewhat pedantic, but to be fair to the translator, we cannot expect a scholarly translation to be as elegant as a literary one any more than we can expect a literary one to be as literal as a scholarly one.

Though a scholarly translation has the advantage of literal precision, it might not be very inspiring to a friend of the Muslim community who is just starting to learn about Islam. A literary translation will be more inspirational and enjoyable to read, like poetry, which might explain the continued popularity of Rodwrll's among non-Muslims in spite of its flaws.

Unfortunately, Pickthall was not Shi'a though.

I am not as familiar with the other translations in the OP but would you mind clarifying your translations as the most literary vs. most scholarly? 'The best' does not mean much otherwise.
