Insha'Allah can someone tell me more about this hadith?? I just came across it and know nothing about it.

Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) said:

"The prayers of a person who eats one morsel of Haram food will not be heard for forty days."

Here are some more hadiths regarding this issue and their refrences ... it means you must consume only Halal ZABIHA meat, which has been cut and prepared according to the Islamic ruling (i.e. say bismillah b4 you cut it, face the animal towards the Kaba, etc etc ..) Hope this helps.

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) has stated, "One who wishes to have his invocations accepted must keep aloof from haraam food and unlawful earnings." (Al Kafi)

A man asked the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.): "I wish for the acceptance of my deeds." The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) told him, "Keep your food purified from haraam and do not let any unlawful thing enter your stomach." (Al Kafi)

The Messenger of Allah has also said, "When a man eats halaal food an angel stands over his head and prays for his forgiveness till he finishes eating." (Safinatul Behaar)

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) has stated, that Allah (swt) has said that "One who does not care whether the food he eats is halal or haram, Allah will not care what door from which he is thrown into Hell on the Day of Judgement".

salaam

does the same apply if a person eats non-halal meat out of necessity, rather than by choice?

as in:

(2:173) forbidden to you are... if one is obliged by necessity to eat it without intending to transgress, or reverting to it, he is not guilty of sin; for Allah is forgiving and kind.

would their prayers still not be accepted?

Thanks for your replys. I just came across this hadith one day and i could not find what hadith collection it came from. I have hear people say that your prayer are not accepted if you have eaten haram food, but i have never seen any proof. i am just looking to further my understanding.

MOMI: Perhaps i will email a couple scholars to find out more about this reguarding eating haram foods due to necessity vs. not necessity.

i can not imagine that Allah would deny His Mercy to muslims who eat non zabihah meat out of necessity or by mistake. that would seem awfully contrary to the nature of Allah that we are taught about in the Quran.

It depends what you mean out of necessity, if you mean for example your hungry and your outside and 2 hours till u get home and so u eat haram no that doesnt justify it, only if its life and death situaition your allowed 2 and i mean real life and death situaition not an exxageration and your only allowed to eat enough to keep you alive.

Or for example if you are forced to eat it i.e. some terrorists or w/e hold ur mouth open whilst another shoves the haram food down ur throat

Also, what if you eat non-zabiha meat by accident? As in, you go to a Sunni friend's house and they serve non-zabiha meat but don't tell you until after you're done eating?

Not that it happened to me, but still .

You have to ask before eating if its halal however if they tell you its halal and they are muslim and later you come to realise they were lying or they didnt know and they told you its halal then its of no fault of yours and then Im 99.9% sure you wont get punished for that

What is the source of this hadith:

"The prayers of a person who eats one morsel of Haram food will not be heard for forty days."

I'd like to check for its authenticity.

Thank you

The most well known version of this narration is about drinking alcohol, not about haram food.

This is the closest I could find:

ÃØÈ ßÓÈß ÊÓÊÌÇÈ ÏÚæÊß¡ ÝÇä ÇáÑÌá íÑÝÚ ÇááÞãÉ Åáì Ýíå ÍÑÇãÇ ÝãÇ ÊÓÊÌÇÈ áå ÃÑÈÚíä íæãÇ

"...If a man eats a morsel of food that is haram, his supplications will not be answered for forty days." (Makaram al-Akhlaq, no isnad)

Here seems to be a saheeh hadith on this

It seems there is no doubt that the prayers of whoever that drinks alcohol/wine will not be accepted for 40 days.

There are many acceptable traditions that confirm this.

However, I have not found anything yet, regarding eating haram food.
