Latest on the pier

Stupid idea that ends in failure.

Quote

The $230mn floating pier, built by the US, was meant to be an ingenious if complex workaround to the inability of even US President Joe Biden to convince Israel to streamline the stuttering flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. But broken apart by the modest winds of the Mediterranean summer, shuttered for most of its two-month lifespan, and now mothballed before the end of its planned deployment, the project has become a symbol of international impotence in the face of Israeli intransigence.

Curious use of the phrase 'international impotence'.

The US blocks all international criticism of Israel. The pier was an American idea and was executed by Americans. The fact that it has failed illustrates American impotence, not anyone else's.

The Russians and Chinese will be taking note.

Of course, it also illustrates something else. If Gaza is being supplied with adequate food, as the Israelis claim, why would the US subject itself to such financial cost and humiliation?

The Syrian casualty comparison

Here the FT's correspondent criticises people who want to ignore the Syrian crackdown (and resulting casualties) because of what is happening in Israel.

I think it's worth noting that tens of thousands of Palestinians have died because of a one-day raid by one Palestinian group, with smuggled arms, that killed just over a thousand people*.

Assad in Syria was up against a fully armed and equipped army (aided by the West and the Gulf states) that was looking to overthrow the government. The conflict was on another scale.

Of course, there would be lots of casualties in Syria. And the West knew this when they started the insurrection in Syria. Just as we have always known that there would be a bloodbath in Ukraine.

The conflict is now also used in one of the worst cases of “whataboutism” I can think of. Some argue it is unacceptable to discuss Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s ongoing war against his people because of his traditional anti-Israel stance: “Have you seen what Israel is doing?”

The final death toll from the attack is now thought to be 695 Israeli civilians, including 36 children, as well as 373 security forces and 71 foreigners, giving a total of 1,139.

"The spectacle of a fiery Benjamin Netanyahu meeting repeated thunderous applause and standing ovations from his obsequious servants in the US Congress was truly something to behold. Here it was: two of the world’s self-styled leading 'democracies' openly and unashamedly embracing and celebrating their mutual criminality and systematic dismantling of international law, while denigrating the common decency and courage of many of their own citizens and the almost universal opinion of humankind on the question of Palestine."

This needs to get to the MSM:

He runs a Zionist podcast called "Israel Explained".

Where was this clown when idf were driving nails on palestinian dissidents during the second intifada or when Israel occupied my village in southern lebanon before the year 2000 and had their "christian" fascist militias torture people in khiam prison on their behalf and orders? Or when Israel's extensive record of torture spanning decades was talked about?

Absolute joke of a guy, this is what they get for being willfully ignorant, he'll feel like an idiot once this is all over.

Saudi Arabia has been instilling fear in the Muslim world because Shia would never follow their corrupt leadership due to their ideological position. However, they have been somewhat effective. The Sunni political journalist, Sami Hamdi put out a video this week and gave his analysis on who was saving the Palestinian cause. He called out treachery in the Muslim leadership but was hesitant to say Houthis were doing the most. He said Houthis had killed Muslims prior to the Gaza war, as had Iran… However, the Houthis we’re fighting against those that are acting treacherous towards the Palestinian cause but these dots were not connected in his analysis. I think it is hard for Sunnis from an ideological position to resist corruption in Muslim leadership. They have a belief that it is wrong to resist a corrupt Muslim government and that Allah will protect them.

Syria has not followed suit of Jordan, Egypt, SA, UAE in turning a back to the Palestinians.

The government has history of being US puppet.

Anyone who wonders why the US has such animus towards China only has to look at other economically powerful countries in the region such as Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

They all kowtow to the Americans. The assumption had been that China would do the same once it embraced capitalism. But it did not turn out that way.

Out of the frying pan into the fire ... and grateful for it

An Israeli [Arab Bedouin] hostage rescued from Gaza returned to a hero’s welcome tinged with a bitter reality: Much of the small village he calls home, Khirbet Karkur, is targeted for demolition.

Qaid Farhad Alkadi, 52, ... was released from the hospital and returned home a day after his dramatic rescue, which he recounted in appreciative phone calls with Israel’s prime minister and president.

The problem here is that people associate Gaza with Islam.  They associate Islam with terrorism.  They associate terrorism with incidents that happened in their countries, like 9/11, the incidents in Europe over the years, bombings, stabbings, running over people, etc.

There is no sympathy for people that do those types of things.  But there is sympathy for people that are on the receiving end of those things.  The Israelis are smart, and they knew this.  They maximized the media coverage of Oct 7.  Which was a horrible day.  No doubt.  But they have been able to minimize the amount of media coverage of the horrible things happening in Gaza.  And they've successfully made the life of a Gazan appear less valuable than the life of an Israeli.

This conflict will be won on the internet, on television, and economically.

I also suspect Israel knows this. And knows their time to wipe out any hopes of a Palestinian state is limited.
