Salam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

[shakir 33:33] And stay in your houses and do not display your finery like the displaying of the ignorance of yore; and keep up prayer, and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying.

[Yusufali 33:33] And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless.

[Pickthal 33:33] And stay in your houses. Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance. Be regular in prayer, and pay the poor-due, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah's wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing.

When I first read this surah, to me it seems like it's talking about the Prophet's (saw) wives. Even this singled out verse, I am really confused now about this surah and verse. Can anyone tell me what are their thoughts when they read this chapter and verse?

They say it's talking about the ahlul-bayt, the descendants of Muhammad (saw). I would also like to point out interestingly enough, the verse is 33:33....which adds up to 12 LOL, not that I'm into the number theories.

Thanks for anyone's input.

salam.

Salam o Alekum,

This ayat was not reveiled for the wives.

Reason #1

It was reveiled when the Prophet (SAWW), Imam Ali (as), Hazrat Fatimah (SA) and their two sons Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussain (as) came under one cloak (kissa, chadar).

Reason #2

When the ayat came, Umm al Momennen Hazrat Umm Salma (SA) asked if she was included in the ayat, she was told that she has her own status (meaning she is not included in the ayat).

Reason #3

After this ayat came, for 6 months Prophet (SAWW) stoped by the door of Hazrat Fatima (SA) after Fajr prayers and recited this ayat. "...Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying". (Quran 33:33).

Reason #4

There are hadith clearly stating that wifes are not included in Ahlul Bait (as).

Reason #5

There are gramatical reasons why wifes are not included.

Khuda Hafiz.

its simple, this ayat Allah swt, address the prophet wives in the beginning.

And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger.
this is half of the aya, and it stops with a period, and goes on to address another pples, in the second part of this aya, all of the sudden the mood becomes different.

Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying.

Allah swt could have stopped after purify, but Allah swt went on. saying it will be a thorough purifying, which leaves not doubt about their infallibilty.

www.al-islam.org/encyclopedia plz refer here for more detailed analysis on this verse, there is enough sunni references that points out the wives are not included..

Sallams Br. Mujahid,

good question!

The proof that the verse 33:33 refers to people other than the wives of the prophet lies in understanding the ayat in the context of the Arabic language.

Verse 33:30 says:

íóÇ äöÓóÇÁ ÇáäøóÈöíøö ãóä íóÃúÊö ãöäßõäøó ÈöÝóÇÍöÔóÉò ãøõÈóíøöäóÉò íõÖóÇÚóÝú áóåóÇ ÇáúÚóÐóÇÈõ ÖöÚúÝóíúäö æóßóÇäó Ðóáößó Úóáóì Çááøóåö íóÓöíÑðÇ {30}

[shakir 33:30] O wives of the prophet! whoever of you commits an open indecency, the punishment shall be increased to her doubly; and this IS easy to Allah.

In this verse God is specifically speaking to the wives of the prophet, as you can see the word minkunna is used. minkunna in Arabic refers exlusively to the females and not males, its a feminine plural word.

Verse 33:31 says:

æóãóä íóÞúäõÊú ãöäßõäøó áöáøóåö æóÑóÓõæáöåö æóÊóÚúãóáú ÕóÇáöÍðÇ äøõÄúÊöåóÇ ÃóÌúÑóåóÇ ãóÑøóÊóíúäö æóÃóÚúÊóÏúäóÇ áóåóÇ ÑöÒúÞðÇ ßóÑöíãðÇ {31}

[shakir 33:31] And whoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger and does good, We will give to her her reward doubly, and We have prepared for her an honorable sustenance.

Again in this verse minkunna is used. Which means the group referred to is only females.

Verse 33:32 says:

íóÇ äöÓóÇÁ ÇáäøóÈöíøö áóÓúÊõäøó ßóÃóÍóÏò ãøöäó ÇáäøöÓóÇÁ Åöäö ÇÊøóÞóíúÊõäøó ÝóáóÇ ÊóÎúÖóÚúäó ÈöÇáúÞóæúáö ÝóíóØúãóÚó ÇáøóÐöí Ýöí ÞóáúÈöåö ãóÑóÖñ æóÞõáúäó ÞóæúáðÇ ãøóÚúÑõæÝðÇ {32}

[shakir 33:32] O wives of the Prophet! you are not like any other of the women; If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in (your) speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn; and speak a good word.

Again, the word lastunna is used, referring to a group of females only.

Verse 33:33 says:

æóÞóÑúäó Ýöí ÈõíõæÊößõäøó æóáóÇ ÊóÈóÑøóÌúäó ÊóÈóÑøõÌó ÇáúÌóÇåöáöíøóÉö ÇáúÃõæáóì æóÃóÞöãúäó ÇáÕøóáóÇÉó æóÂÊöíäó ÇáÒøóßóÇÉó æóÃóØöÚúäó Çááøóåó æóÑóÓõæáóåõ ÅöäøóãóÇ íõÑöíÏõ Çááøóåõ áöíõÐúåöÈó Úóäßõãõ ÇáÑøöÌúÓó Ãóåúáó ÇáúÈóíúÊö æóíõØóåøöÑóßõãú ÊóØúåöíÑðÇ {33}

Over here God specifically uses the words ankum and yutahirakum. These two words in the Arabic language refer to a group of males and females. If God was referring only to females (wives of the prophet) then similar to earlier verses God would have used the words "ankunna" and "yutahirakunna". But that is not the case.

So through out God refers to a group of people consisting only of females, but in 33:33, the group of people referred to are a mix of males and females. Which makes it clear the group was not the wives of the prophet.

A good place to read about 33:33 is a chapter of Musavi Lari's book "Imamate and Leadership"

Bahlool

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Salamun Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakaatohu.

Brother Mujahid, what Brother Orion mentioned referring to Hadith Kisa is correct and accepted by all Shias and most Sunnis. However should someone object to the Hadith for what ever reason, they should also be referred to Ayat Mubahelah (3:60) of the Holy Quran.

AND UNTO HIM WHO DISPUTES WITH YOU THEREIN AFTER THE KNOWLEDGE HAS COME TO YOU, SAY:(O OUR PROPHET MUHAMMAD) (TO THEM) "COME YOU, LET US SUMMON OUR SONS, YOU (SUMMON) YOUR SONS, WE (SUMMON) OUR WOMEN AND (YOU) YOUR WOMEN, AND (WE SUMMON) OUR SELVES AND (YOU) YOURSELVES AND THEN LET US INVOKE AND LAY THE CURSE OF Allah ON THE LIARS". (3:60)

All Exegetists are unanimous that the above Ayat is nothing but praise for the Holy Five (PANJTAN PAK A.S.)

This Ayat was revealed when the Christians of Najran refused to acknowledge Prophet Muhammad SAWW. as a bonafide Prophet of Allah SWT. The Christians were not willing to accept the reality of Prophet Isa bin Maryam A.S. vis-a-vis Allah SWT. (ie. not son of God) when this was mentioned to them by Prophet Muhammad SAW. They were neither willing to pay the minority protection tax (jiziya) (A VERY CONDENSED VERSION OF EVENTS).

Shia and Sunni Exegetists (Mufassireen of the Holy Quran) and Historians mention that Imam Hasan A.S. and Imam Husayn A.S. were the Sons mentioned in the Ayat. Lady Fatima Zahrah A.S. THE ONLY PARTICIPANT FROM AMONGST THE WOMEN MENTIONED UNDER WOMEN IN THIS AYAT. Prophet Muhammad SAWW. and Imam Ali A.S. as our selves mentioned in this Ayat.

Had the Wives( Ummahaatul Momineen) been mentioned as Ahlul Bayt A.S. they would surely accompanied Lady Fatima Zahrah along with the rest of the Ahlul Bayt A.S.

The Shia and Sunni Bretheren also know that Zakat (the poor due) is forbidden on the Ahlul Bayt A.S. This was not the case with the Ummahaatul Momineen.

According to Shia Fiqh, Khums is the tax given to the needy Descendents of Prophet Muhammad SAWW. and the Imam of the Age or his Representative as is the case at present.

According to the Majority of the Sunnis, Gifts may be given to the poor Descendents as opposed to the system of Khums.

Allah HAFIZ.

Your Shia Brother in Islam,

Shahid Abbas Bokhari.

The Lover of the AHLUL BAYT A.S. (14 INFALLIBLES)

SHIA AND SUNNI ARE BRETHEREN IN ISLAM.
