Say for the sake of argument

Salam, Brother. What do maraji say about these things? Is there something that we can do to alleviate any anxiety that someone is out to get us?

1. Have a medical exam to talk to a physician or nurse. We should not blame every medical, psychological or financial problem on someone cursing us.

2. Recite the Holy Qur'an regularly, such as Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas and Ayatul Kursi.

Ayatullah Sistani HA recommends the four chapters that begin with "Qul" i.e. Surah Al-Kafirun, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Naas.

3. Recite Duas of our choice. For example the 4th Imam Zain al-Abideen Sajjad AS dua for protection:

4. Have faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى). Nothing will happen to us without His permission, so worship Him and rely on Him. Give sadaqah, no matter how small, even if it is only something we can say to someone, not just give money or food or clothing.

5. Love the Ahlul Bayt AS. Love (Mawaddat) of the Prophet's Family (closeness, nearness, Qurba) is the mandatory recompense (reward, Ajr) for Prophet's efforts/services. Holy Qur'an 42:23

6. I'm sure there are others who can reply.

Salam. Breathing incense can damage your lungs if you fill your room with smoke all day long, every day. Only use safe incense, not harmful synthetic ones. See this info:

What are safer alternatives to incense?

No indoor burning is completely safe as it adds pollution to the air and increases health risks. However, the cultural and spiritual importance of incense must be respected. “The key is to reduce the duration and frequency of exposure and improve ventilation in the area,” Dr. Christman said. “Opening a window and burning the incense near the window can be helpful and will reduce exposure to the occupants of the home.”

Other considerations are to use fans and portable HEPA air cleaners or only burning incense outdoors. If someone in the home has an existing lung condition, you may want to consider only using incense for cultural and spiritual practices when they aren't home. If they are home, try to limit their exposure. If you choose to burn incense, you can also minimize the health risks by choosing high-quality, plant-based incense over synthetic varieties.

Instead of this, I advise you to recite Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq, as it will be better.

I'm a revert I haven't nailed down what sect I want to belong to. Any answer based on your own belief and study is welcome.

Salam wr wb

Brother, I suggest you look into the meaning of 'shirk' and what it constitutes before attaching the label onto any act that you may not fully understand.

Using incense or reading Quran or any other act one may engage in to protect themselves from any and all bad things is not 'shirk', as we know that any benefits we may get are ultimately and exclusively through the will and blessings of none other than Allah Ta'ala.

Salam,

Do not expect incense alone to rid of black magic or a jinn issue if there is one; rather, seek refuge in Allah through your obligations (daily prayers), hold to the rope of Allah (the A'immah of the family of Muhammad [S]), and ensure that the Quran is frequently recited in your house.
