As we enter Muharram 1448, we warmly invite you to join us for a profound 10-night educational and spiritual journey: Shahada — The Theology of Witness and the Grades of Martyrdom.

Over ten nights, we will move away from the passive idea of victimhood and reclaim the active, conscious Islamic framework of what it truly means to bear witness. Through the sermons of Shaykh Shabbir Hassanally, historical narratives (Maqtal), and traditional mourning (Azadari), we will trace the unbroken chain of divine witness from the dawn of humanity straight to the plains of Karbala.

Here is what we will be exploring together each night:

• Night 1: Where Is Your Brother? — Redefining Shahada and exploring the story of Habil (Abel), the world’s first witness against tyranny.

• Night 2: The Oldest Covenant on Earth — Tracing the Abrahamic prophetic lineage of sacrifice and the inherited sorrow of Prophet Muhammad ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)).

• Night 3: Five Kinds of Death — Unpacking Ayatollah Motahhari’s philosophy on how a true martyr’s death breathes life into a dying society.

• Night 4: Every Day Is Ashura — Analyzing Imam Husayn's Sermon of Mina and the heavy cost of silence, alongside the isolation of Muslim ibn Aqil.

• Night 5: The Cross and the Witness — An interfaith look at Christian martyrdom, our shared roots of resistance, and the courage of Hurr and Wahab al-Nasrani.

• Night 6: The Wretched and the Witness — Examining why purely secular sacrifice falls short of true Shahada, while honoring the Youth of Karbala.

• Night 7: Nothing More Precious Than Independence — Exploring Karbala as the ultimate blueprint for anti-colonial resistance and the epic loyalty of al-Abbas.

• Night 8: To Die Like Falling Cherry Petals — Learning to discern true, divine witness from romanticized or counterfeit sacrifice alongside the 72 Companions.

• Night 9 (Eve of Ashura): The False Shahada — Exposing how empires and extremists weaponize religion, contrasting it with the pure, silent witness of baby Ali al-Asghar.

• Night 10 (Ashura): Husayn, Heir of Adam — The climax of our series, positioning Imam Husayn as the ultimate cosmic criterion against which all of history is weighed.

Every session includes beautiful Quranic recitations, English poetic couplets, deep theological reflections, and congregational elegies (Nohe) to connect both the mind and the heart.

Due to the office of Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei saying that Muharram 1, 1448 will be on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 - and since our programs are tailored for the 'eve of the nights of Muharram' - our programs will be starting insha Allah on Monday, June 15, 2026 and not Tuesday, June 16, 2026 as previously indicated.

Toronto Time is the same as New York and Eastern Time, 3 pm.

For Central Time zone, in line with Chicago and Texas, etc., it is 2 pm. 

Mountain Time in line with Colorado, etc., is 1 pm. 

Pacific Time California, Oregon and Washington state is 12 pm. 

FYI: You are not required to watch at those times. You can watch at any time that you are able to do so, InShaAllah.

When God is removed from a cause, does martyrdom lose its meaning?
