As the title asks.

If a dead person is living in a paradise atmosphere due to their good deeds and beliefs when they were living - can they supplicate to God on the well being of their relatives? Can the dead still supplicate at all? Or is that only for special positions, i.e asking God through the infallibles.

i.e, I visit my dead relative, recite Qur'an for their benefit, give them company. As the Holy Prophet mentions, they can hear me when I speak to them. So can I ask them to pray for me in specific matters? Can they help me too, if they are in a good position?

No doubt it is not as good as visiting the infallibles, but pious scholars/people (including relatives) are still able to intercede if they lived a good life.

but in this sort of case, personally, I'd think it's better to supplicate myself or using an infallible

For sure I supplicate to God myself.

It's like a natural reaction - when you're really close to someone and they know you really well, and they share your faith..asking them to pray for you on a certain situation just naturally comes out when you spend time with them.

So I wondered if it had any basis. Can the dead even supplicate at all right now?

Like I know individuals on Judgement day can intercede for people etc. But I just mean someone making dua for you from barzakh while you're alive.

Or it's only strictly the other way around where we pray for them?

Bismihi Ta'ala. Supposing they were righteous and the angels carry your words to them, there is no difference between them and others. In Ziyarah Jamiah we read approximately 'were I to know of better intercessors, I would place them before me (instead of the Ahl al-Bayt)'.

Many ahadith grant the reward of intercession to the believers in general, and for commissioners of certain actions, like servants of pilgrims or memorisers of the Qur'an or scholars, and it is not appropriate to reject the blessings of God by not seeking the intercession of, for example, one's parents, may Allah have mercy on them. Similarly seek the blessings of Allah everywhere in the world and remember him, in acting on the path he has shown you, so that you find success. Serve the sa'dat, pilgrims, scholars, righteous people, poor, all Shi'a, and so on, so that inshallah your salvation can be found in one of your good deeds. None of this contradicts having faith in the wilayah of the Imams, anymore than being desperate for the intercession of Ahl al-Kisa' contradicts one's faith in the mercy of Allah.

Salamun ala l-mursalin, wa l-hamdu lillahi rabbil alameen.

Salam. I regularly ask Christian relatives to make dua for me or even acquaintances that I have never even visited their homes. Anyone who wants to make dua for me is welcome to do so. If Allah did not accept their dua, maybe He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) will grant me another dua.

I believe the martyrs are not dead and they might hear us if we call their names or visit their graves. Can someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I certainly like Hameedeh's response of getting dua from anyone lol.

Just a kind emphasis on my question:

- I am not asking whether or not we can ask for salvation/intercession from dead individuals.

- I am not asking about dead martyrs or scholars, etc.

I am asking if the average dead relative, like the average person, if you feel they were good person overall, if they, in their grave, can make specific du'a for you. Can they make du'a for you? a specific du'a for your life, not regarding intercession.

I skimmed al kafi for any hadith related to the topic. Best I could find were:

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah , about the souls (spirits) of believing people. He said, ‘They are in chambers in paradise, they eat and drink thereof and say, “O Lord, make it the Day of Judgment, allow what You had promised us to come true and join the last of us with those who were first.’””

https://thaqalayn.net/hadith/3/3/91/4

and

"Visit your dead people for they become happy due to your visit. One of you should ask for his wishes near the grave of his father and near the grave of his mother, with supplications for them [that they'll be pleased with]."

https://thaqalayn.net/hadith/3/3/85/10

I'm no scholar, no critique of traditions, neither have I read every tradition out there. These above traditions indicate that they can potentially supplicate, and I guess that you should ask your wishes near the grave of them (or, at least, your parents).

I remember hearing or reading of some tradition of the Holy Prophet where he calls out the the dead (after a battle?) of something along the lines of, "and how do you find God's promise to you?" and he was asked if they can even hear him and he had said yes. And I think - I can't remember - the dead in question might have been disbelievers, i.e, they can hear you too, it doesn't mean only a martyr can hear you.

I guess other sects out there would think it's shirk, but in any case, if anyone can bring in their thoughts with traditions and verses - much appreciated. Though I guess most verses explore martyrs, or interactions of the dead upon judgement time.
