I went to a BIPOC poetry slam over the weekend and it inspired me to give it a shot. Lol.

 

Apparently, I missed the memo 

that only the chosen people get a microphone

Too preoccupied writing my own vision statement 

to ask for permission 

Fortunately, I lost myself and found myself up here 

anyways

 

Don’t worry about if I am the right kind 

of marginalized woman

To put my foot down and raise my fist for 

Indigenous perspectives in the field of psychology

Just follow the logic. Validity

 

Some people get canceled for words against one group

The culture divides on words against that group

Here is a new set of word rules for this group

 

Qwoted banned me from talking to reporters

When I served my opinion that alarmed their supporters

For as long as I can remember I have been 

oh so dangerous

 

I am the baddie who stands for the oppressed 

Muslim women are so oppressed

Says CNN, Fox News, and some bots on Twitter, 

Its an upside down ruse by Super Imperialists

Funny how the left and the right can agree on one swing

When it comes to repeating the same boring things 

 

So say goodnight to the bad guy

I am staying up late studying my shadow

Reclaiming the term terrorist like an Amber Rose Walk

 

I may have been a good American

But the matriarch left me for a rock and roll life style 

She wanted her freedom and independence

I wanted to chase her 

but I didn’t know how to run in high heels

A conference of birds tweeted

Educate yourself if you want to be invited to better parties

 

I studied psychology for so many years my head hurt

Because no one taught me alternative views

Or what kind of identity crisis people suffer 

When their culture is stolen, 

African Americans and Native American tribes

Yet they called me a doctor because I was

Institutionalized in San Francisco

I cried out, “Where is my teacher?”

 

For crying out loud we have a mental health crisis

ISIS was killing Muslims and sparing the colony

No more learning from elders

They locked the gate and threw away the key

How much of your soul do you lose if you abandon your faith?

 

A trick to pick a lock

Get a Malaysian VPN 

A few months later get a Mexican VPN

One VPN gets canceled get another one

Uncle Sam kept pulling me down from 

Drinking from the fountain

Modern day book burning is blocking 

Iranian websites

 

Five years after the Iranian revolution

I was playing in the courtyard of an Ayatollah

Splashing around in his fish pond 

This was childhood during the Iran-Iraq War

While people elsewhere were clutching their pearls

I grew up believing the people could rise up and do anything 

God Willing

 

Am I just supposed to follow the mainstream news

the Axis of Evil narrative

Without raising my voice for alternate views

Isn’t being a judge about hearing both crews?

 

Looking for ancestral lines

Spitting lines on a poetry slam

Spreading Iranian poetry like strawberry jam

 

Some think I have an authority problem

What problems? 

There are just solutions

May they know authority 

especially His own

Thank you, it has gone through some iterations since I posted it. Insha'Allah I can do it at a poetry slam sometime.
