Most Sunnis believe the entirety of the Tulaqā’ – Amnestied Meccans – to be true believers, while the Shia believe their majority to be hypocrites, who only outwardly converted to Islam with rejection in their heart, as they no longer remained in position to fight the Muslims after the Conquest of Mecca.

According to the Shia, their hypocrisy became evident through their fighting against the Prince of the Believers (عليه السلام) in the Battles of the Camel and Siffīn, as hating him necessitates hypocrisy according to an agreed upon Hadīth.

The following Qur'ānic verses too vindicate the Shiite view about the majority of the Tulaqā’:

لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًۭا مَّآ أُنذِرَ ءَابَآؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَـٰفِلُونَ ٦ لَقَدْ حَقَّ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَىٰٓ أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ٧

6. In order that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are heedless.

7. Indeed the Word has proved true against most of them, so they will not believe.

Salamun 'alaykum,

Sunnism has unfortunately always been under the influence of the rulers, so they won't even understand such clear proofs for the Nifaq of many of the Quraysh / Tulaqa, because they were the rulers.

Don't forget that the lay-Sunni has ZERO knowledge of early Islamic history (even those who think they know something do not know anything and you can trust me on this one, because I'm speaking from personal experience) and has been tricked into believing that the companions were all similar to angels and had all good intentions. As for their Mashayikh then most of them have only studied later texts where everything negative about the hypocrites among the companions has already been filtered out and censored. Their earlier and bigger heads believed that it's a religious obligation to hide these issues not just from the laymen, but even from the students of knowledge.

The result is a nation that doesn't know its history and looks up to the enemies of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his pure family) and to those who betrayed his message for a small worldly gain and even takes their religion from them.

Wallahul musta'an.

But Surah Ali 'Imran ayah 110 says, "You are the best community ever raised for humanity—you encourage good, forbid evil, and believe in Allah. Had the People of the Book believed, it would have been better for them. Some of them are faithful, but most are rebellious."

Allah is talking about the first generation of Muslims which were still alive during Imam Ali's political reign... plus, the majority of the companions joined Imam Ali's movement when he became caliph... so it couldn't be that the majority of companions were against Ali (peace be upon him) but rather a sizeable percentage... perhaps 20 - 30% or so... otherwise you're contradicting Qur’an

Absolutely. Majority of Prophet Muhammad (saws) sahabas are praised in Shias Islam. People get wrong idea of us Shias because they expect all of the sahabas be praised or else you hate them.

Prior to the Conquest of Mecca, the population of Medina was not more than 16000, while Mecca's population was over 60000.

The Amnestied Meccans (Tulaqā’) heavily outnumbered the pre-Conquest Sahāba (the Muhājirūn & Ansār), and many from amongst them became pseudo-Muhājirs even though the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) had explicitly announced on the day of the Conquest of Mecca:

لا هجرة بعد الفتح

There's no Hijrah after this Conquest.

Hijrah no more, so no more Muhājirs. But still those Tulaqā’ who settled in Medina plagiarized the term Muhājirūn. These pseudo-Muhājirs formed the bulk of those mentioned as Muhājirūn supporting Abū Bakr's claim to the caliphate in a speech by ‘Umar (Bukhari: 6830).

The majority of the (real) Muhājirūn & Ansār were with Imām ‘Alī (عليه السلام) at the time of the Saqīfa overturn. But they were overpowered by the multitudinous Tulaqā’ backed up by heavily armed forces of Banū Aslam called in to Medina by Abū Bakr and ‘Umar.

As for the protest by the zakāt-withholders in support of Imām ‘Alī (عليه السلام) – a little late owing to the distance and time issues during the Saqīfa overturn – it failed to bring any change because by that time Abū Bakr had become firmly in charge of the state.

Imām ‘Alī (عليه السلام) in his letter to Mu‘āwiya made the case against him that since the majority of the remaining Muhājirūn and Ansār (not Tulaqā’) had pledged allegiance to him, he had no excuse remaining.

The pre-Conquest Āyāt praising the sincere believers from the Muhājirūn and Ansār are mischievously used by bigoted Sunnī scholars as so-called proofs for revering all the Sahāba including the Tulaqā’, overlooking the following Āyāt and their implications:

O you who have believed, how is it with you, (that) when it is said to you, “March out in the way of Allah, ” you sink down heavily to the earth? Are you satisfied with the present life, (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) rather than with the Hereafter? Yet in no way is the enjoyment of the present life, in the Hereafter anything except a little thing. (Al-Tawba: 38)

And when they see some merchandise or some amusement [beating of Tambur (drum) etc.] they disperse headlong to it, and leave you (Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) standing [while delivering Jumu’ah’s religious talk (Khutbah)]. Say “That which Allah has is better than any amusement or merchandise! And Allah is the Best of providers.” (Al-Jumu‘a: 11)

Lo! those who call thee from behind the private apartments, most of them have no sense. (Al-Hujurāt: 4)

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful. (Al-Hujurāt: 6)

Interestingly one finds the following in one of the earliest non-Shi'i Tafasir (Tafsir of Muqatil bin Sulayman):

___

So the majority of the people of Makka are explicitly mentioned here among those who will be punished due to their disbelief.
