I was interested in them until I saw some suffi piercing rituals. they used what looked like huge ice pics to pierce there cheeks running it in between the upper and lower teeth threw both cheeks. One used a knife to pry his eyeball out of socket. This looks haram to me and bidda. How could this bring you closer to Allah? maybe only some orders do this and others aren't deviant?

These are deviant people, they have nothing to do with Sufis and Irfan. Take a read what Irfan is all about.

Sufiism is very broad. You can have two Sufis who are nothing like each other. There are even Sufis who are pretty much Sunni and Sufis who are pretty much Shia. A lot of variety. But of course the most shocking ones get the most attention. Just like how for a while Islamic terrorists were our representation globally.

There are Shia, Sunni, and Sufi Irfan. It's pretty much devoting the entirely of your life to God. Every cent you make, every minute you have, every word you utter, all for God. And complete submission to the will of Allah.

Without that spirit from God that guide and make us do the good deeds with love and ease it is really pointless. Because then we will only force ourselves to all these Sufi and Irfan teaching and trying to force ourselves to remove bad characters and add good characters and we will only feel nothing but agony and pain because of forcing. And then we will claim ourselves this and that, when in reality it is only Shaytan delusion.

The guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) is a that one that needs no forcing, it will make you automatically remove the bad characters from yourself such that you feel that your heart is in ease and pure and that you feel utter disgust to do sins. It also make you automatically by grace of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) to only follow what is good, thus it will make you habit to only do good things, so you will get all the good characters by time.

This only happens when one truly sincere repent where he will feel the force in his heart to follow Islam with love, hope and fear.

From Ayotullah Sistani:

Question-2: How can a person strive against oneself and discipline his soul to cleanse it of vices and moral impurities and practice religious austerity? Is it possible to achieve religious spirituality without a guide? Knowing that despite reading many books in this field, listening to sermons, meditations and trying really hard, he is not able to develop his personality, and he feels despair and lost, and he seeks guidance from Your Eminence to help him get out of this situation.

Answer: Meditation and legitimate austerities do not require a mentor. For this purpose, it is sufficient to follow the manuals of jurisprudence and to combat oneself in avoiding forbidden lusts. But it is not obligatory to abandon legitimate desires if one does not overindulge.
---

This is what I mean by forcing. God Guidance will make it easy to Obey Him and avoid forbidden lusts.
