"Hellbound" depicts a South Korean society plunged into chaos when supernatural beings begin to publicly condemn individuals to hell, with brutal, monstrous executions following the prophecies. This leads to the rise of a cult-like religious order, the New Truth Society, which interprets these events as divine justice. The series explores the social and psychological impact of this cataclysmic event, with characters struggling to understand the decrees and the rise of extremist factions like Arrowhead.

Analysis and review of the Korean series "Hell bound"

Playing as God in the series "Hell bound"

This film is a protest film. Protesting some thoughts and beliefs that the film can ask for correction or can root them out and prove atheism. In my opinion, the first case, which is fighting against incorrect interpretations, is closer because the film does not fight beliefs, it fights against the belief interpretation of events.

The Korean series "Hell bound," which was recently released by Netflix, was able to be shown in many countries around the world in a short time and has achieved high sales and ratings. Before expressing our view on this film, we must consider an introduction, which is that there are always circumstances with every film that make a filmmaker turn to a specific topic. Most of these circumstances must be found and recognized in the country of production in order to understand a film. Even if a film with a transnational theme is made, there must have been circumstances and conditions in the country where the film is made that designed and implemented that idea. Perhaps it is possible to separate commissioned films, but these orders still depend on domestic conditions. For example, when the mini-series "Chernobyl" or the film about the murder of "Khashoggi" is made in America, there must have been a reason within that country that created this motivation.

These reasons also bring words into the film that point in a specific direction.

The series "Hellbound" is no exception to this rule, and the words of this film should be considered to have originated from the requirements within Korea. In the notes for the series "Squid Game," we had a reference to religious propaganda in South Korea. Propaganda that has created a kind of gap between its believers and believers of older religions in Korea, has led people to distance themselves from Christianity, and has created a view that is a kind of confrontation with Christianity. This view is also present in the series  "Hellbound", and there is even talk of a belief other than the Korean people's belief about the innocence of babies. What complicated the story is this difference in sin and lack of innocence (original sin). That is, the difference in the main beliefs of the Korean people and Christianity. Korean people live with several religions and have no problem with it, but the fact that a kind of confrontation with Christianity is seen in two very important series all at once in the space of a few months is a bit questionable.

----------------------------------

1-Looking at the film's text
We will summarize some of the film's points to clarify the content of the film a little, but we must also consider that the series Ahl al-Jahanam (اهل جهنم )  (Hellbound) will certainly have a second season and we must wait for it to be able to better examine its content:
1- Inferences; The story that unfolds in the film Ahl al-Jahanam (اهل جهنم )  (Hellbound) is accompanied by human inferences and human perspectives on events. Humans only hear a word about hell from a messenger, but what really happens and is that messenger an angel or are those monsters sending sinners to hell and do they go to hell or are their sins cleansed or not? That God sent these monsters to take sinners to hell? And... All of these are human arguments, especially the leaders of the "new truth", and in the rest of the film, these fabrications and designs are seen even in the way the body moves and the way the leader of the sect speaks and performs ceremonies, such as the ascension.

------------------------------------------

2- Inadequacy and ability of the law;

This film was made in an environment that does not see the law as sufficient to prevent crime and sin. The law not only cannot prevent the growth of crime, but also allows the commission of crime at ages below the legal age. In the first part, we see the police protesting against these laws, saying that they cannot arrest those destructive teenagers. Perhaps this is the main reason for making the film. The inadequacy of the law and human errors in enacting laws that cannot create deterrence and, on the contrary, create an environment for the growth of violations, rebellion, and disorder. Yes, from the very first part, there is this discussion in the police dialogue that the court cannot severely punish criminals and releases them under false pretenses.

"Director Jung," the leader of the "new Truth"  Cult, touches on this very point and points out the inability of the law and the police to punish criminals, saying: "The police can't even find the criminals, let alone deal with and punish them." In another place, he tells Detective King-ho: "The law couldn't punish your wife's murderer and..." meaning that this law can't even support its enforcers and executors, so then the rest of the people have their place. So now is the time for God to come in to bring order to the world and deal with criminals and sinners. Interestingly, if someone opposes God's work, the cult's followers will remove them from the path. They have already answered the question of why this is happening in Korea, saying that it is because there are cults that help God to make people wise, order prevails and no sins or violations occur.

The cult wants to create order, but it doesn't know how to do it. For this reason, its presence creates disorder. They believed in rules that were not perfect, so they had to adapt the rules to their words and propaganda, not themselves to the rules. For example, when they are faced with the news of a baby being demonized, they decide to hide it so that the rules they considered are not invalidated.

---------------------------------------------------------

3- Attack on the right to choose and human will;

This is discussed a lot throughout the film. Some people believe that it is the right to choose and will that allows anyone to do anything without being punished or even nobody being able to detect their sin or violation. From the perspective of the above reasons, this film should not be seen as an ordinary film. This film alone can form a sect and a cult in the future that wants humans to be without will and without the right to choose and to strive to realize its ruling system.

Just as philosophers like Marx concluded from the oppression that was inflicted on workers that private property benefits a specific class, not all people... Therefore, private property must be dealt with, and later this idea was implemented and governments emerged that strongly opposed private property and committed any crime to achieve it.

------------------------------

4- God's weakness;

The fact that God has finally found a way to put pressure on humans, either by teasing or reminding, admonishing, and anything else, shows that people have found God incapable of taking serious action. He is desperate to control and guide his creatures and is looking for a way back, so with little thought, he has come to the conclusion that he must guide humans by applying pressure and force. A God who does not have mercy on innocent people, and even at least is not on the side of his own missionaries, and sends them to hell.

The filmmaker wants to blame people's ignorance on God, which has become a reason for accepting multiple interpretations and being deceived by deceitful people. In the meantime, repentance, good deeds, good behavior, preaching God, asking people to abandon sin, repentance, and... cannot save anyone. In the last part, the head of the sect [new truth] tells the "Arrowhead" misioner that God wants you to make up for his mistake with your help, and you are God's chosen one.

Overall, this film shows  ruling as God by people very well.

---------------------------------------------------

5- Immediate and accessible solution;

This film talks about a general human belief, which is [using] "fear" to prevent sin and transgression. They believe that scaring people is the best way to create order. When the law cannot fully supervise and even when supervision is not appropriate, crime and misdemeanors increase. There must be an internal motivation here that can keep people away from sin and transgression even in the absence of law.

In the very first episode, Director Jung says in a discussion with Detective Geun-ho: "What else makes people repent except fear?"; They believe that every person should be careful about their behavior and use their authority and ability to abandon sin and know that if they do not do this, God will one day take them to hell with disgrace, and even if they commit suicide, they will bring them back and kill them in public and send them to hell.

--------------------------

6- Human interference;

An interesting point to note is that the members of the cult can easily kill God's opponents, for example, but no monster comes after them. The audience sees an innocent old woman being beaten to death several times, but this is not seen as a crime by God. The reputation of the sinners have ben tarnished and no one pays any attention to it, and if they protest, they are accused of fighting God!

Furthermore, from the fourth episode onwards, Yongjae, who plays the role of the cult's propaganda film producer, sees this order as a kind of disorder. He believes that this has caused some people to bully the world towards order or God. They enter homes, humiliate them, beat them, and... Yongjae considers this situation a kind of "hell." An interpretation that leads to the accusation of being against God.

The entry of members of the "Arrowhead" cult, who were enemies of the "new Truth" cult before these events, into the police station and the beating of the police is the same disorder that was created in protest of the previous disorder; people are afraid to report the violations and crimes of the "Arrowheads", while they were seeking to establish justice and lower the crime rate! This transformation from a reforming position to a corrupting position reminds us of many revolutions that initially chanted slogans centered on justice, but along the way, all the slogans changed and even disappeared. These contradictions and changes make the audience doubt whether the monsters really come from God? If they are from God, God does not do injustice and does not overlook the sins and crimes of the "Arrowheads" and "New Truth" cults.

------------------------------------

Possible Intentions
As mentioned, this film should be analyzed in the intellectual atmosphere of Korea. A country whose people believe in several religions and each of them looks at life differently. The fact that filmmaking enters a less-touched area such as religious and belief issues and wants to correct some beliefs or create a belief shows its importance.

The importance that arises from a damage or phenomenon.

Arbitrariness interpretations of religion and faith, introducing customs that conflict with humanity of human and the human spirit and intellect into religion, limiting people to a single way of thinking, having the intention of solving problems with having  non-homogeneous customs, etc. can be a good reason for  filmmaker.

Since the filmmaker has to endure misinterpretations and analyses or attacks from some religious people, one can also understand the filmmaker's determination.

We believe that the filmmaker has some intentions in mind that he wants to raise questions around in his film, make the audience think, arouse their emotions, and demand some reforms.

For example, the idea of creating fear to keep people away from sin is what the audience thinks about. A fear that humans are not compatible with [it], and this film probably wants to rebel against it.

The film wants to say,

first, that people cannot be kept away from sin by scaring people.

Second, what are the limits of this creation of fear? And who takes the trouble to do it?! Of course, let's ignore the fact that humans resist fear at all and take a defensive stance, etc......., because the discussion will get longer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We can introduce the view of [seeing] God in this film in two general ways.

First: The film wants to say that this creation of fears, which is presented in the form of belief, is not from God but from Korean religious missionaries.

If God wanted to rule man in this way, he would have done it by now. If not, then these methods are not the right method. Perhaps this is the turning point of the film that distances the audience from connecting human behavior to God.

The filmmaker stands against some beliefs that existed but could not distance man from sin, crime, and transgression ; [which] These do not consider confession of sin to be sufficient and do not want to turn the city into a confession room in the church.

Second: Seeing this complexity of the film's events, the audience asks themselves, is there a God who can rule [with] justice? Is there a God who can end this suffering? Who is this God who sends some to hell but not others? Why should a human being be constantly in pain and torment in his life?

This question also comes up in one of the dialogues, why did God create humans in torment? As a result, when it is said at the end of the film that there is no one to help us except us humans, the audience accepts it.

But it does not say in what way?

Overall, this film is a protest film. Protesting certain thoughts and beliefs that the film can request to be corrected or can root them out and prove atheism.

It seems that the first case, which is fighting against incorrect interpretations, is closer because the film does not fight beliefs, it fights against the belief interpretation of events.

For now, the first season of this series ended with hundreds of unanswered questions and could not cover some of its weaknesses. Of course, it was successful in raising questions and explaining some of its intentions.

The film created a flat earth in the first season so that it could perhaps build a building on it in the following seasons.

There are many contradictions, but the overall story is clear. Even the disappearance of Detective King Ho, who  due to his silence, could not challenge the course of the story.

Some critics considered this film without a story and a main character, but the filmmaker wants to say that these principles are not important to him, so he wants to delay it.

We find this film weak overall, but we cannot ignore what it says.
