So I generally take out a small amount of money as sadqa daily on behalf of imam, and I recently had an incident where a person claiming to be shia asked for money saying he needed help, which I kind of doubted but it's 21 ramadan and I was on the way for amaal so I thought it would be better just to give it to him as it isn't a huge amount and if he's actually needing help, then it would be great, but I'm confused now whether I can give out the money I save as sadqa at instances like these. Could anyone help me out understanding if I did the right thing or not

You did the right thing. Sadaqa is meant to help the needy, it does not require you to investigate if one is really needy. I read a quote of Imam Ali (عليه السلام) in which he was asked how do I know whether a person to whom I am giving charity deserves it? Imam replied that give it to the one who deserves or deserves not for Allah (عزّ وجلّ) will grant you what you deserve or deserve not.
