I live in Canada and living here is becoming hard because of lack of jobs + racism on the name Mohammad so they prefer hiring white sounding names mostly.

in addition to that, i have a lot of debt by only living here. Its so much that even if i have a good job here and continue living here, I don’t think I will be able to get rid of the debt in next 10 years if I continue to stay here.

I have been extensively researching different countries and I have come to the conclusion that Malaysia is the best country to live in for a muslim family. Its global yet muslim dominated society so things are convenient.

One thing I am concerned about is being able to practice my Shia Islam freely there. I don’t think it would be an issue if I open my arms and use tasbeeh as a turbah (like we used to do in Madina) so thats not the problem. However, what concerns me is if the maids there or our new muslim friends there find out that we are Shia. There’s uncertainty on their reaction. I know most of them aren’t even exposed to Shia Islam so they don’t even know what it is (have virtually talked to a couple of Malaysians and told them about the shia persecution that happened there a decade or so back, they didn’t know)

so in this case do you think Takkiyya would be the right step forward? Or just practice privately? Even though our religion is that of a community religion and way more sawab in doing worship acts as a community rather than in seclusion.

I have also explored other countries like Thailand. They have a lot of imam bargah’s and stuff but Malaysia just seems way better plus cheaper than Thailand.

I would ideally want to live most of my remaining life in Madinah but that requires pretty expensive visas to live there. And given my current debt situation, that option isn’t practical at the moment.

Please advise if you have any.

Ws salam brother, I highly recommend you not to go to Malaysia, if you were Sunni then I would’ve said yes but Malaysia has hatred towards shia and you might be deported if you practice your religion. I remember reading a lot of articles about this. In Malaysia if you are shia, you must practice your religion only inside your apartment, once you leave your apartment, no one should know you are Shia or else they will deport you. It’s funny they allow Hindu to practice their religion but not Muslims. I hope allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) punish them severely.

I recommend you took for a country like Oman or Kuwait since they don’t have hatred toward Shias, Oman is definitely good.

Wa alaikum as salam

Oman might be a better option for you. You won't be the first one in your situation, many people are moving there from the West currently due to the reasons you cited.

I explored Oman a little but Malaysian weather was more attractive plus their greenery is great.

I will check out Oman but I was hoping for something positive about Malaysia. Worst case, maybe just live there for a year?

We were giving them a benefit of the doubt and thought maybe they just wanted to keep 1 form of Islam in place so that there’s no fighting, sectarian violence.

I mean if you look at countries that allow free practice of Shia Islam like for example Pakistan and there’s not much government control on this matter, there’s a lot of shia targeting. My family back home has faced that a lot. Plus I don’t want to go back to Pakistan since its not good for children/ specially girls/women.

Also did you hear this about Malaysia from any friends who live there or you formed this opinion through online forums? So in this case if we live there, we will definitely need to do Taqqiyyah? Close hands while praying + not use Turbah?

Salaam Aleikum,

Malaysia is very hostile for Shias and it is not even safe to live there. If they found out that you are Shia, they will be far worse for you than an racist Canadian.

My wife family is Singaporean and we sometimes visit Malaysia. We can only do Taqiyyah because we know how hostile they are towards Shias. They have been manipulated by their scholars and media how mushrik Shias are.

So that means if we live in Malaysia we need to do Taqqiyyah for sure. Outside apartment. N learn their way of Wudhu etc?

Nope I saw it from the forum and online only. If you want brother, try and see for a year but pls be careful because we don’t know what they will do. Like do everything at your apartment only, when you leave your house don’t tell to anyone u r shia

I really don't recommend that. Visiting is fine, but living there means they can found you out.

Villages are horrible because the  locals know each other and they expect participations. Trying to hide could make them suspicious.

KL have a lot crimes and not safety to live. Also living in Taqqiyah in KL is bad idea. I remember just using taxi we got a driver who talked non stop about salafi Zakir Naik. I prayd to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) to not make him to ask about my religion.

This is very much based off an impression via holidays, but would you say East Malaysia better than peninsular Malaysia?

In Kuwait, Shiites are second class people, even though they make up 50% of Kuwaiti Muslim population. Even born Arab Kuwaitis are denied citizenship if they are Shia. [edited out] sectarianism is rife all over the place in the Middle East and beyond.

Malaysia is very anti-Shia, it’s all legacy of Saudi petrodollars. There were many instances of Shia villages burnt down by the [edited out] mobs. During Muharram, Malaysian Police raids Shia homes and arrests people. It’s insane the level of hate „Sunnis” have for us.

Ibadi Oman is relatively tolerant, there’s plenty of Shias living there. Shias have their own centres and mosques, government built the biggest Shia mosque in Oman located in Muscat.

That’s not true are all, I know many Kuwait Shia who are rich or atleast upper class.
And if you go to any shia mosques, you will find each one of them is protected, there is police officers always checking on people if you look suspicious.

Have you ever visited Kuwait and other countries of the region? In Bahrain and Saudi Arabia there are also rich and upper class Shias, what does it change in the wider scope? Nothing. Few selected ones to placate the poor and oppressed masses.
According to NGOs and human rights organisations, the Shia community face marginalisation in social, economic, and political fields, including "glass ceiling" discrimination in employment. Shia are under-represented in all levels of government and parliament.
Yes I do and I live in one of these countries. The rich shia help the poor Shias or the needed ones. That’s what I saw since I was a kid.

I recommend the op to do a good research again with all Muslim countries and see which one is better. I do believe Asian countries is not a good place for Shias.
