Breaking a promise

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته 

My friend told me something bad about another person in my class. But before he told me this, he said "Wallah do not tell anyone". Then I did promise him that and he told me this story. Now I am thinking about this incident and what I should do, should I break my promise or no. And if I do break it, what should I do (islamically)?

Do not tell anyone else and tell your friend to stop talking about people behind their back.

If you do break it, then just repent to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى).
