Iran builds drones for underwater operations

TEHRAN- The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy on Saturday showcased a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that can perform a range of naval activities independently, as well as a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone.

The Iranian-made unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) has a 24-hour endurance and can descend as far as 200 meters.

Due to its shallow depth, the Persian Gulf could be home to underwater mines buried between 10 and 50 meters below the surface. These mines might seriously harm even the heaviest of warships, weighing up to 250 tons.

Iran develops underwater drone

TEHRAN, Dec. 03 (MNA) –  The Iranian Navy unveiled an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) capable of detecting and disabling naval mines.

The homegrown UUV, also known as an underwater drone that can operate without a human occupant, was unveiled in an exhibition of the Iranian Navy’s achievements

The Iranian UUV can go as deep as 200 meters with an endurance of 24 hours.

Since the Persian Gulf is relatively shallow, it may contain a series of underwater mines laid at depths of 10 to 50 meters, which could cause serious damage to vessels as heavy as 250 tons.

The Iranian Army’s navy unveiled a remotely operated unmanned underwater vehicle and a vertical take-off drone at the Iran Army Navy’s exhibition of scientific and technological achievements on December 2, as reported by the Tasnim News Agency.

The homegrown vehicle, capable of detecting and destroying various types of underwater mines, has a human operator and can be deployed against both moored and bottom mines. It can operate for up to 24 hours at a depth of up to 200 meters below the surface.

The vehicle can address a range of underwater mines laid at depths of 10 to 50 meters, posing a threat to vessels as heavy as 250 tons. It is designed to carry cargo for mine destruction, serving as a valuable addition to the Army navy’s RH-53 mine-sweeping helicopters and minesweeping vessels like the Shahin mine-hunting vessel.

Iranian Navy intends to equip ships submarines & autonomous vessels with AI.

The IRGC forces have applied modern technologies and sciences, including artificial intelligence, to four main sectors, namely the drone, missile, vessel and submarine industries, IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Reza Tangsiri said.

He noted that the IRGC has manufactured unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) that can travel long distances and return home after conducting an operation.

The general noted that the AI-powered USVs and UUVs can receive commands, attack a specific target with a desired layout, carry out intelligence operations, and return to the base after carrying out a task.

In remarks in August, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said Iran has reached such a high level of expertise in the defense industry that major world powers are willing to acquire its achievements.

The top general said Iran’s numerous achievements and products, including modern, smart and effectual military systems used by the ground, naval, aerial, aerospace, missile, drone and cyber defense units, have elevated the components of the country’s power and strengthened its deterrent power.

Houthi Lethal Underwater Drones Adds New Threat to Red Sea

Quote

The U.S, has not released details about the UUV destroyed by U.S. forces this week or the parts seized. The photographs released show a propeller (screw) section that is consistent with UUVs used by Iran.

The UUV, along with those seen in Iran, appears similar to a torpedo. orone-way attack underwater drone (OWA-AUVs). Generally, these have a greater range than a torpedo but are slower, making them most effective against static targets such as ships in port or at anchor. The type typically used in Iran, according to observers, can be fitted with a short mast, possibly to observe the target before attacking. It is possible that the device can be remotely operated by a wire, similar to wire-guided torpedoes. This would allow it to engage moving targets.

Houthi Militants Deploy a Drone Sub for the First Time

Quote

On Saturday afternoon, Central Command hit three more anti-ship cruise missiles, one more drone boat and - for the first time - one unmanned underwater vessel (UUV), or drone sub.

CENTCOM did not provide further details on the design or purpose of the drone sub, but described it as the first of its kind since the latest round of Houthi attacks began. The command described it as an "imminent threat" to U.S. warships and international shipping.
