Bismillah. Salam alaikum.

As you know sunni brethren believe 12th or Rabi is the birthday of the Holy Prophet. And we believe it is the 17th of Rabiul Awwal.

And Imam Khomeini declared these noble days Islamic Unity Week and right now it is celebrated in Mashad, Karbala and many other places in huge crowds by people of all backgrounds.

Mawlid

Mawlid or Mawlid al-Nabi al-Sharif (مَولِد النَّبِي‎ mawlidu n-nabiyyi, "Birth of the Prophet", sometimes simply called in colloquial Arabic مولد mawlid, mevlid, mevlit, mulud among other vernacular pronunciations; sometimes ميلاد mīlād) is the observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad which is commemorated in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar. 12th Rabi' al-awwal is the accepted date among most of the Sunni scholars, while Shi'a scholars regard 17th Rabi' al-awwal as the accepted date.

Shiite scholars recommend charity payments, doing charitable works, and delighting the believers on that day. Sunni scholars recommend giving gifts and feeding the poor as a tribute to the Prophet (s) on that day. For this reason, Muslims around the work hold celebrations on the Prophet’s birth. The day is a holiday in India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Egypt.

The Iranian Cultural Attaché in Algeria highlights the celebrations held in Iran to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (p.), stressing the notion of Islamic unity.

Quote

Following the interval of the dates of the celebration of the Mawlid, the leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini announced the Islamic Unity Week from Rabi' I 12 to 17. This period was named, by Imam Khomeini, as "the Week of Unity between Shi'a and Sunnis", during which the International Islamic Unity Conference is held annually. From 1990 to 1994, Islamic Advertisement Organization had been in charge of holding the conference, but after the establishment of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought by the order of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, this Forum became responsible for this mission.

The goal of the conference, attended by scholars and thinkers from around the world, is to present practical solutions to achieve Islamic unity.

Sunni brethren believe it is the 12th of Rabiul Awwal. Most shia Muslims believe it is the 17th of Rabi ul Awwal (Sheikh Kulaini and Masudi believe it is the 12th btw).

And as you all said, commemorating long events (like ten days of Muharram, 30 days of Ramadhan, eid, mawlid and martyrdom anniversaries) is not hard rather it helps us remember the holy figures and their cause (islam), so it is nice to spread the Milad an Nabi to a whole week and listen to lectures about Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and unite under his banner.
