Wa alaikum salam wa rahmatullah.

Shia Muslims as well as Sunni Muslims are advised to learn Arabic if and how much they can. Especially Quranic Arabic.

Quote

Imam Khomeini: Learn Arabic language, tajwid knowledge and be allert in every field.

However, learning Persian has a lot of islamic benefits as well considering the fact that even sunni hadiths mention in the tafsir of Surah Maidah, 54 that great men among Persians are revivers of Islam. So, in order to try to learn from them, one can learn Persian as well.

Most famous Shia Islamic seminaries are in Qom and Najaf and they speak Persian and Arabic. So, learning both languages can keep Muslims up to date. Also, because in other places shia muslims are targeted with disinformation, I mainly see that the works published in shia minority islamic countries are about defense, answering allegations etc. However, in Iraq and Iran people are not busy with those things. So, shia muslim writers can focus on writing Tafsir of the Holy Quran (Tasneem Tafsir, Tafsir al-Mizan, Tafsir Nemooneh, Tafsir Rahnama etc.), exegesis of Duas (Jawshan al-Kabeer, Dua Arafah, Dua Kumayl etc.), Salat ul Layl (night prayers) and its benefits, sulouk-wayfaring, irfan-gnosis-wisdom... etc.

I hope I make sense.

Arabic is probably preferred, for obvious reasons. Farsi can be useful I suppose if you intend to study in Qom or something. Unfortunately I know neither language.

Salam for studying in Qom learning Farsi is obligatory which majority of lessons are presenting in Farsi which you only need to know basic level of classic Arabics  which you will learn Arabic for religious studies in courses of Hawza of Qom .

You can check Jeremey Davidson who is a Canadian student of Hawza of Qom for receiving more advices

Unfortunately I'm too old now to consider attending Hawza. I would have definitely considered it like ten years ago if I was at the stage I am now, but back then Islam wasn't really a priority in my life.

Assalamo alaikom.

I was just curious if shia learn farsi as well as arabic. Is it important to learn farsi?

While Farsi is a langues with a rich tradition beyond just Shia thought and expression.

It has world renowned reputation for poetry and philosophy.

For example Rumi's primary language was Farsi, and then you have many poets like Miraza, ghalilb and others.

As far as our faith it is not required,  and most shias likely don't know it beyond the Irani and Afghani shia.

Salam respectfully this is a false assumption because all Shia scholars in advanced levels must know Farsi at least in level of reading  & understanding written advanced books about Shia Islam which have been written by great past & contemporary  Shia scholars which great Marjas likewise great Ayatollah Sistani is using Farsi for answering important Fatwas .

Israeli High School Students Are Learning Farsi to Become Spies in the Future

Quote

Run by former state security officer Pini Shmilovich since 2015, the program has already seen several graduates go on to work for Israeli intelligence agencies. Speaking about his motivation for leading the program, Shmilovich explained he sees the threat from Iran as one of the main issues impacting Israel.

As a result, military and spy agencies could rely on a sizeable population of native speakers, according to Haaretz. Now, with few Jews arriving from Iran, Israel aims to train a new generation of young Israelis to join the covert struggle against its archrival.

Nevertheless, even after the documents were discovered, they needed to be translated so the broader intelligence community could access and understand them. At every level, operations against Iran require competent individuals who know the language while also understanding cultural nuances.

While Iran definitely has an interest in spying on Israel as well, it's less clear whether it has put effort into training agents in Hebrew. Meir Javendanfar, an expert on Iran at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, near Tel Aviv, said some universities in Iran reportedly teach Hebrew, but information is sparse, according to The Jerusalem Post.

'Learn Arabic as it is the language of the Qur'an, and Farsi as it is the language of Revolution'

A nice quote by someone I forgot.

Salam quote has been expressed by martyr Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis (رضي الله عنه) which has expressed it in The Documentary: Selfie with Abu Mahdi .

Learning Farsi can deepen understanding of Shia texts and heritage, enhancing connection to historical and religious sources. For practical application, such as navigating online Qibla direction tools or understanding Persian resources, Farsi proficiency proves valuable for Shia Muslims worldwide.
