Assalamualaikum, forgive me if this isn't the right place to ask this question. Im new to the site and don't know much about where to post and what not. I recently started wearing the hijab, and its been amazing. I love wearing it but got kinda scared when my classmate told me that she had hairfall due to her hijabs' undercap. She warned me not to wear it for long periods of time and make sure to take it off as soon as i don't require it as excess wear could result in hair damage. I have also heard that the hair doesn't get exposed to the sun as much so that makes it unhealthier. So sisters who have worn the hijab for years, what has been your experience? is it true that the quality of your hair has gotten worse? if so what has been your routine to prevent this?

Just don't wear tight undercap or wrap too tightly, and your hair will be fine. I don't think hair needs sunlight. Pay attention to which fabrics work best for you too.  My hair is not sensitive, but some ladies prefer silk, cotton, or other natural fabrics.

Hi i don't think hijab damages your hair, the quality of your hair depends on how you care for it and genetics also play a huge role too.. if your hair is damaged from colouring and/or styling tools. Then i'd suggest doing hair keratin treatment or nanoplasty personally i love keratin more than nano and it makes a huge difference to the quality of your hair, also using Olaplex is great too!
But as suggested above if you want to be extra careful you can use soft under-caps that aren't too tight fitted with silk underlayer.

Also suggest for your friend to get blood tests done as this may be a sign of some sort of iron deficiency and/or the deficiency of other vitamins.

i have never dyed my hair or styled it, its just on the thinner side. im just scared the undercap might be pulling it too much and i dont wanna start balding, my friend told me it can happen. im thinking of getting the silk undercap tho or a jersey hijab which doesn't really need an undercap. thankyou for the suggestions nonetheless. jazakallah khair.

(oh also i'll let my friend know, she does have some health issues and ill make sure to take this advice too)

Salaam,

I dont have a routine. Just keep it washed, well rinsed and completely air dried then put in a pony tail before putting on scarf cap.

Like others said, just make sure its not too tight. And really make sure you rinse your hair well because your scalp could start to itch in warm weather otherwise.

As a side note, i dont know how old you are, but once you reach mid 30s and up, hair loss, sometimes alot, is common for many women as our estrogen drops and perimenopause begins. No one talks about this midlife change and many women panic when they start noticing things just arent "right" with them anymore, so do yourself a favor and learn all you can BEFORE you hit peri or it can be quite....there arent words for it. Just be prepared-it wont be the scarf cap or hijab at that point, it will be hormones.

i have heard that it is a really bad idea to wear the hijab with wet or damp hair. so i've completely avoided doing so. i put it in a hijab cap and i don't know if its tight, but there are times when it hurts my ears. this only happens after wearing it all day for college though. this might sound really stupid but i don't know how tight is too tight for a hijab cap. fortunately for the place where i live, its mostly too cold lol.

and yes i have heard of how older women have this issue as their estrogen drops and menopause nears. Im not near that age as of yet but sometimes the food we eat, what shampoo we use and pillowcases even can effect the quality of hair, thats why i was a little cautious and wanted to make sure i don't regret wearing the hijab 2 or 3 years down the line.

thankyou for your input nonetheless sister, jazakallah khair

30s? Is that what is normal? I think around 50 is normal, but maybe that is just women in my social and ethnic group?

Salaam sister, yes some women will start to experience the first signs of perimenopause in mid to late 30s which might just be increased anxiety, hair falling out or tinnitus but nothing major or alarming at first but symptoms just get worse..

There may be differences depending on ethnicity. Many times what a womans mother experienced during peri and menopause can be a fairly accurate predictor of what the daughter will go through. Diet, exercise, stress level and general health also play considerable roles in how things will manifest.

When you're not wearing it, don't keep your hair up in a bun or ponytail, leave it loose and let it breathe. Use hair oils/conditioners like you normally would after the shower etc. I don't think you need a particularly thorough hair care routine tbh. Use silk scrunchies/hair bands if you're particularly worried about breakage.
