So I wanted to ask the exact rules of combining salat with regards to the length of time between them.

for example I would pray combined dhuhr and asr :

I would pray dhuhr then recite Qur'an in the middle for say 20 minutes then say Asr prayer.

Is this valid ?

Is this considered combined ?

or do i have to say the prayers immediately with minimal time delay?

You can have a brief time gap between the two prayers even if you are combining them. But you have to follow the correct order, that is, you can not pray Asr before Dhuhr.

It's actually much better to separate your Salah.

While combining can be allowed depending on who you follow, there consensus is it is better to separate.

Note - i would argue to add more time between maghrib and Isha than Sayed Sistani advises - maybe he was being geography specific?
