In the name of Allah,

Bear with me as it may come as a shock.

Ayatullah Gharawi, is major scholar in Iran, has written this regarding Dua Tawassul:

"A manmade so-called dua omitted from my book is “Tawassul,” unfortunately oft-labeled “Dua Tawassul” when, in fact, it is not a supplication whatsoever. It does not even bear the scent of the Infallibles (a) and it is the most clear-cut example of a fabrication. It is commonly stated that Tawassul is the creation of Sheikh Tusi, however, this is a weak opinion. It should not be assumed that this originates from the Infallibles (a). Even calling it a “dua” is a mistake, providing ammunition for Salafis to criticize Shi’ism. Dua means beseeching the Lord. Dua means giving one’s attention solely to the Creator. However, this manmade dua is an intercession unto the Infallibles (a)."

Shaykh Yasser al-Awdah beautifully echoes this:

Salam for clarification  Ayatullah Gharawi is not  major scholar in Iran which he is clearly an Indian twelver shiai scholar which he is just a member of Majma Jahani Ahlulbayt, Iran who has been  appointed representative of Majma Taghrib by Ayatullah Sheikh Mohsen Araki for the Indian sub-continent.

which real Iranian Ayatullah Gharawi al-Isfahani  has been known as Ayatollah Kampani & professor of late Ayatollah Behjat who has no relation to this baseless accusations by @In Gods Name which he has mistaken two different persons with each other based on anti Shia propaganda .

Grand Ayatullah al-Gharawi al-Isfahani

`Allama Sayyid Muhammad Husayn al-Isfahani, who is famous as al-Kampani, is one of the prominent mutjahids and great authorities of his time. Actually, he was a man of fiqh the like of whom is quite rare in all times.

SSF: The Authenticity & Efficacy of Dua Tawassul and Dua Nudbah

On Sunday 4th of March 2018, the Shia Scholars Forum held a discussion on “The Authenticity & Efficacy of Dua Tawassul and Dua Nudbah” at Al-Mahdi Institute. The discussion commenced with a presentation by Shaykh Ayyub Rashid who looked into the nature of Dua and to whom Dua must be done. He then went on to explain Tawassul and the various types of Tawassul that can be done and the various Duas by the name Dua Tawassul that are available in the Dua literature. After that he looked at the content of Dua Tawassul (which is recited generally on Tuesday nights by the Shia communities) where the fourteen infallibles are invoked as intermediaries,  and whether that is consistent with the essence of Dua and whether it is a correct form of Tawassul. Furthermore the chain of narrators of this particular Dua was analysed, and it was found to have a number of inconsistencies in the chain. The opinion of Shia scholars such as Ayatollah Khui, Nasir Makarim Shirazi, Yusuf Gharawi and others were looked at in regard to Mafatih al Jinan and in relation to Dua Tawassul.

Tawassul - Seeking a Way unto Allah

Abd al-Karim Bi-Azar Shirazi

Rejection of Ibn Taymiyyah's Opinion

1. The claim that the companions of the Prophet (saws) never supplicated in this manner is the understanding and deduction of Ibn Taymiyyah. How do we know that when the second caliph says “we make tawassul to you through our Prophet” does not mean “for the right of our Prophet (bi-haqqi nabiyyina)”, or is not addressed to the Prophet himself? Most Sunni 'ulama' have given the latter meaning and from the wording of the sentence itself the Prophet is being called upon.

2. Suppose none of the companions had made tawassul by the right of any of the divine Prophets, it does not mean tawassul is Haram even if some of the companions were to explicitly prohibit such an act. The opinion of the companions of the Prophet (saws) is not binding on the Muslim ummah, except perhaps for a few jurisprudents, unless it is related from Prophet Muhammad (saws) himself.

Justification of the Salafiyyah on Non-Permissibility of Tawassul

Ibn Taymiyyah in Qa'idah Jalilah, Ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab in Kashf al-Shubahat and Muhammad Rashid Rida in Tafsir al-Manar, opine that although during the life of Prophet Muhammad (saws), his companions would address him for their needs, after his death they never approached his tomb for their needs. They even forbade those who intended to supplicate beside the Prophet's (saws) tomb.

Can it not be seen as asking an intercession to them? We know that Prophet (saws) and his family can intercede, can it not be seen that members of Ahlulbayt (عليه السلام) are informed of the mu'min needs and they intercede to him?

There is so much accounts that people asked in Shrines and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) answered their needs, how someone can deny them?

You will find these accounts and claims in every religion, so it isn't in itself a proof.

Salaam Aleikum,

You are absolutely right, I have found accounts from Christianity too, which one can not doubt.

I remember once one said the reason why Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) do this is to test our faith if we fall for shirk or stay in Tawheed.
