My boss told me that as soon as the paperwork goes through, I should expect an offer to become the "real" first grade teacher of my current class.

It has finally gone through!

I'm sure most of y'all have heard that US teachers are grossly underpaid. Even knowing that, I was a bit shocked when I got an email informing me of the amount of my paycheck for September 16, my official start date as a teacher, to September 30.

NEGATIVE $200.

Yes, they are charging me to work there, apparently.

I am going to ask them to explain it to me using math. They said something about prorated salary, but it should still be a salary, not a fee.

They're lucky I am dedicated to my students, because that's ridiculous.

It's no wonder they are having such a hard time hiring people!

Wokery in the United States

What is "woke terms"?

To be honest, I've only ever heard the term "woke" used by regressives, and that in a negative way. (Conservatives want to keep things the same. If they want to go backwards, they are not conservative, they are regressive.)

Any tips for training other people's young children to have empathy and kindness?

I'm having them draw pictures of certain topics and then share what they've drawn. Today they drew "things I like about myself". I haven't seen results yet, but it's only been a day.

I'm pretty sure it's a daily or weekly lesson. There was a viral video by a teacher on Instagram.  always.upper.elementary

She equated rude language with squeezing out an enormous amount of toothpaste and no matter how hard you try to put the toothpaste back into the tube (take it back, apologize to the person for your rude language), it can't be done. The video goes something like this:

If somebody can't change something about themselves in 30 seconds or less, then you shouldn't be mentioning it to them. If you say Hey your shoes untied or Hey you have a little fuzzy on your shirt there or if you say Hey your pants are unzipped and I wanted to tell you privately because I didn't want you to feel embarrassed but it happens to all of us. If you tell someone something like that, they can change those things in 30 seconds or less, but if you comment on someone's hair color or hair texture or hairstyle or body, they cannot change that in 30 seconds or less about themselves. Your words have power. If you say something that someone can't change in 30 seconds or less, you try to fix it, you try to apologize, you try to take the words back, take it back, take it back, take it back, and you try to undo what you said, undo what you did, but it's something they couldn't change about themselves and so its very messy. You can't totally take those words back, you can't totally fix it. Your words have power and your words matter. If you walk out of this room spreading kindness to the people around you, spreading love to the people around you, that is what truly makes a difference.

Solar heaters on the White House

In 1979 Jimmy Carter installed these solar heaters on the White House. They were used to heat water rather than have a boiler do it. The President who came after him, Ronald Reagan chose not to have them put back after roofing works.

If the US had carried on the path Carter had started - it would by now likely have had a lead over China in renewable energy technology and Biden would not be worrying about tariffs and other barriers to keep out Chinese technology.

The fate of the panels is even more poignant by the fact that on the day of their installation on the White House roof President Carter stated: ‘A generation from now, this solar heater can either be a curiosity, a museum piece, an example of a road not taken, or it can be just a small part of one of the greatest and most exciting adventures ever undertaken by the American people.’

Same here, I don’t know why I still believe he is alive and this is just a prank. I still can’t accept it.
