In this video, we analyze the numerous narrations accepted by all Sunni and Shia jurists in which the Prophet (p) threatens to burn the homes of those who would not attend congregational prayers in the Masjid. How did Muslim jurists explain these narrations? We will explore around 10 different opinions, most existed before the Iranian Revolution and some contemporary ones, especially political interpretations put forth by Imam Khumayni and Ayatullah Montazeri in his book on Wilayat al-Faqih.

In addition, we will look at whether these threats by the Prophet (p) have any similarity with the threat the second caliph makes on the house of Imam Ali (a) when demanding allegiance or not.

The Prophet's Order to Burn the House of the Hypocrites

Pages from the Life of the Great Prophet, may God bless him and his progeny, by Thaqlain

Laed: It is narrated that when the Holy Prophet came to the battle of Tabuk, he noticed that some hypocrites had gathered in a place and were trying to dissuade the people that  they strive for jihad. When the Prophet found out, he ordered to burn that house.

This syntax of the Prophet's command and this quote leads to questions that we will explain in this article.

Narration of this incident: Abdullah bin Haritha says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny) received news that some hypocrites had gathered in the house of Suvaylam (سویلم)the Jew  and were preventing the people from preparing for the journey of Jihad. So he sent Talha bin Ubaidullah to them with some of his companions and told him to set fire to Suvaylam's house on top of them. Talha did the same and Dahhak bin Khalifa threw himself from the roof and broke his leg , and his companions have done the same and  fled.[1]

There are several questions about this:

Why did the Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny ) order to set the house on fire? Wasn't it enough that they were brought before him to punish them in front of the people?!

Wasn't this treatment contrary to the policy that he had announced many times, that the Arab people should not say that Muhammad kills his companions?! Wouldn't setting fire cause loss of property?! Isn't it the fact that the purpose of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny)doesn't burning cause  financial loss?! Why didn't he investigate the accused and didn't give them a chance to defend themselves?!

In response we say:

1. The Jewish family broke the agreement. Therefore, neither him nor his house was respected.

Seizing the house and keeping it would cause the hypocrites to covet it and provide an excuse to incite, albeit secretly, the feelings of some people who were occupied by oppression and did not deserve confiscation.
Also doubting the validity of action of the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his progeny) would cause doubt in;  justice, sanctity and awe of the Prophet.

We will see that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny) destroyed the Zarar Mosque and did not stop at condemning hypocrisy and hypocrites. Almighty Allah also sank Qarun to his house in the ground and turned the village of Lut on the heads of the inhabitants!
Perhaps the reason why the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny) chose this method to crush the plots of the hypocrites and his enemies , it was that it was more terrifying for the enemy and had a greater impact among the people and would remained in the memories more. It also opened a stronger place in soul of  people.

Perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny) did not intend to cause physical harm to the residents of the house;

Quote

As it happened in the story of Mabur. Where he ordered Ali (peace be upon him) to kill him. Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: O Messenger of Allah, are you sending me in pursuit of this task so that I am as hot as a sword or that the witness sees something that is hidden from  absent?!

He said: No, the witness sees something that is hidden from the absent.[2]

Ali (peace be upon him) chased him with his sword until the truth of the matter was revealed and the lies of the slanderers were exposed.

Perhaps one of the proofs of authenticity is the fact that despite the fact that the hypocrites were not harmed and only one person's leg was broken, namely Dhahak bin Khalifa, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny) did not summon anyone, nor have we heard that he questioned Dhahak or He has blamed so much that he will punish!
