I suspect that the Israeli strikes were part of a preplanned campaign approved beforehand by the Trump administration and regional Arab clients. Using the breakdown of negotiations as a pretext, ‘bad cop’ Israel would incrementally increase the scope of its activities and thereby force the Iranian leadership into an untenable situation, while ‘good cop’ Trump would publicly offer a resumption of talks under unacceptable conditions, thereby facilitating more-extensive Israeli operations. Trump himself has just admitted as much, outlining an expansion of Israeli military actions, should the Iranian leadership refuse surrender. (Strangely, just weeks ago the Trump administration asserted that talks with Iran were progressing well, and not long before both sides cast doubt on the prospect of war.)
