I can construct a couple of examples without knowing any details, except that the database was probably not DB2.

Suppose the Sysadmin(s) get PM working and manage to restore the DB and index(es) but it turns out that they were not backed up at the same time or for some other reason they are not in sync.

So I go look at two of my PMs from ten years ago, but they are from someone I never talked to, but is still an active user on this site, and they contain very detailed information of a personal nature originally sent in the strictest confidence to someone else.

Suppose it turns out that 20% of the user base has issues of one sort or another, including people who never sent or received a PM but who now has 1,024 in their inbox, all originally sent to different people.

Can you imagine the chaos?

What's messed up about all this is probably next to none of us have each other's actual personal email addresses and now there's no way to exchange those without making them visible to the whole world-.-

Seems like current app is fairly complex otherwise it wouldn't take months to solve these simple issues.

A possible solution can be developing a separate extension for messaging but that won't be usable on mobile + wouldn't have history without collaboration of site owners devs or admins.

I think they should at least give an update, people would appreciate it. I understand they are might busy or working on the issue but at least give people an update

I am pretty sure that Site Admins tried to fix the PM. One of the Admins does not allow messages to anyone (he knows who he is) and right now he has a message box (although it does not work).

Nonetheless, I am happy that the PMs from @Ruq are back. For sentinel reasons, and very fond memories of a woman who was full of fun and always brightened my day.
