I have a question I hope someone can help me get clarity on.

I am the only practicing Muslim in my family. My mother and her side of the family are Catholic, but are neither religious nor practicing and do not believe in religion but in the universe and numerology.

My challenge is that I have been invited to a family dinner in the month of December (Dec 26) the family dinner is being held december 26th, and I very much doubt whether it is shirk if I attend the dinner as it is on that date.

the “only” christian act - so to say - that I have been told will happen, is that there will be gift exchanges.

my clear understanding is that my mother and her side of the family truly dont have any belief in religion and only care about this tradition due to the element of family, being together etc. I say this because in islam I underrstand that intention plays a vital role. If their intention truly isnt anything related to religion is it then considered non-shirk?

or is it the shaitan whispering these thoughts to me?

Salam. Since your family are not Muslims, make sure to eat something before you go to dinner so you will not be extremely hungry. You can avoid foods with haram meat and eat the vegetables and bread, etc.

Salam.

@Idreesisci

Or you could buy some halal restaurant food to bring to the dinner, so you would not attend empty handed. Just be sure to eat something that your Mother made and compliment her on how good it tastes.
