OBITUARY: Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Hussain Najafi (rh) Passes Away

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barkatuh,

Condolences to the Imam of the Age (aj), and to all the mu'mineen and mu'minaat, especially to those from the Indian Subcontinent.

The marja, Grand Ayatollah Shaykh Muhammad Hussain Najafi (rh) passed away yesterday. Let us all recite a fatiha for his soul.

He was one of those oppressed scholars whose worth was never acknowledged in his lifetime. With 13 or more certifications in Ijtihad from various scholarly giants of Najaf, Karbala, Samarra, Kadhimayn and Qom, and about a dozen major and many more minor works to his credit, he had an oeuvre that bore testimony to extraordinary scholarly accomplishment. Pages after pages can be written on his academic accomplishments alone, but suffice it to say that his writings have been indexed in ad-Dhariyah, the celebrated bibliographical work of Agha Buzurg Tehrani, which is an encyclopedia of all the benchmark scholarly writings within the Shi'i scholastic tradition. 

Besides his academic accomplishments, the Shaykh left an indelible mark on the socio-intellectual and political history of tashayyu in Pakistan. Not only was he the patron and inspiration behind many a educational institutions throughout Pakistan, but during the turbulent and difficult years of the hostile Zia ul-Haq regime, he was an active voice of resistance and one of the founding members of the Tahreek-e-Jafaria movement. Two of the major educational establishments which are fruits of his tireless labors, are the Jamia Sultan ul-Madaris and Jamia Aqeelah Bani Hashim (for girls) in his native Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan.

He stood steadfastly in the defence of unadulterated, pristine Shi'ism, as taught by the Imams (ams) and our classical scholars, and made forthright and unassailable critiques of the various innovations and corruptions that have crept into popular Shi'ism over time, a stance for which he was much maligned in certain quarters. He took on both the nawasib anti-Shi'a polemicists and the visibly-'Shi'a' corruptors-from-within with equal gusto. While the ghulat and innovators posing as Shi'is left no stone unturned to revile and abuse him, the nawasib did not leave him unharmed either, a major instance of which was the setting ablaze of his ancestral library by nasibi mobs in the Muharram of 1983, as a reaction to the publication of his book 'Tajalliyaat-e-Sadaaqat', which was written in response to an anti-Shi'a polemical propaganda book.

Among his major works, the 'Ahsan ul-Fawa'id', a commentary on Shaykh Sadooq (rh)'s 'al-I'tiqaadaat al-Imamiyyah', and his seminal work, the 'Usool ush-Shariah fi Aqa'id ush-Shi'a', a delineation of authentic Shi'a beliefs, are equally popular among both the scholarship and the laity. His translation of Shaykh Hurr al-Amili (rh)'s 'Wasa'il ash-Shi'a' is also a benchmark work. 

His dedication to a revival of pristine tashayyu led to him being hounded with calumnies and controversies throughout his lifetime and a major part of the Indo-Pak Shi'a community, who felt that their long-held ancestral dogmas and fads were under attack from him, never took kindly to his presence. Nonetheless, among those Shi'a who actually chose to adhere to the classical heritage of Shi'ism, and in the scholarly circles of the hawazaat ilmiyyah of Najaf and Qom, where people knew how to tell apart a jewel from a piece of gravel, he was always highly valued and respected, a testimonial of which is the rousing reception accorded to him by the other maraji of Qom at the Islamic Unity Conference, held in 2004, which he attended at the invitation of none other than the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei (ha) himself.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) bless his soul, and may his grave be haloed.

I have just seen my task starts from verse:

يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ قُلْ لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا لَنْ نُؤْمِنَ لَكُمْ قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا اللَّهُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِكُمْ ۚ وَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ {94}

[Shakir 9:94] They will excuse themselves to you when you go back to them. Say: Urge no excuse, by no means will we believe you; indeed Allah has informed us of matters relating to you; and now Allah and His Messenger will see your doings, then you shall be brought back to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He will inform you of what you did.

And would end on verse:

فَانْطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا لَقِيَا غُلَامًا فَقَتَلَهُ قَالَ أَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا زَكِيَّةً بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا نُكْرًا {74}

[Shakir 18:74] So they went on until, when they met a boy, he slew him. (Musa) said: Have you slain an innocent person otherwise than for manslaughter? Certainly you have done an evil thing.
