Salam. In the US, it is probably September 5 or 6. We need to know when the Ominous Month of Safar begins. Arbaeen is always Safar 20.

Usually make ghusl the night before, because the Arabic day starts at sunset, and you want to pray special duas after Maghrib and Isha prayers, before you go to sleep that night. When you wake up, on Arbaeen Day, make ghusl again if you need to before Fajr prayers. If you want to make a special ghusl, you need to do it before you pray Zuhr and Asr prayers on Arbaeen Day, because Imam Hussein AS was martyred afternoon on Ashura Day.

Arbaaen has no basis in our religion. The Imams of Ahlulbayt never were known to have observed it. If they didn't do it, i'm happy not doing it either.

Salam this  is totally a Wahabi statement  which there is famous statement from imam Hasan Askari (عليه السلام) about practicing Arbaeen as one of 5 signs of a real pious believer also all infallible Imams have visited grave of imam Hussain at  least one time although of heavy observance of cursed Umayyads so then Abbassid  over them  & banning visiting his blessed tomb in any time which in opposition infallible Imams  have highly encouraged shias to doing it which it has been recorded in many authentic narrations which surly Arbaeen pilgrimage has been existed before time of Imam Hasan Askari (عليه السلام)  which he has mentioned it as one of 5 signs of a real pious believer which it has been always has been denied by followers of cursed Umayyads so then Abbassid which Wahabist are their new advent of them .

SHAFAQNA – It is narrated from Imam Hassan Askari (عليه السلام) who said: Five signs of the believer are: To perform 51 Rok’ats of Salaat (per day/per 24 hours; including Wajib as well as Mostahab Salaats), Ziarat Arbaeen, wearing ring on the right hand, placing forehead (to prostrate) on the (natural) soil, and say “Besmellah-e-Rahman-e-Rahim, loudly in Salaats [1].

[1] Wasaelul Shia, Vol. 10, Page 373 & many other authentic references.

Imam Askari (عليه السلام) ties the survival of Islam, particularly Shia Islam to Ziarat Arbaeen, because the movement of Imam Hussain (عليه السلام) was the cause of the revival of Islam and Shia Islam. Imam Askari (عليه السلام) wanted all the slogans and aims of Imam Hussain (عليه السلام) to remain alive; therefore, he mentioned these signs for the believer.

To you, Pilgrimage in Iran , in multiple Iranian tombs of the ale of Muhammed is worth more than visiting the house built by Nabi Ibrahim , the sacred K'aba where the holiest of all pilgrimage, the Hajj is performed?

This is another wahabi accusation from you which clearly only visiting   Karabal & Najaf & shrine of imam reza (عليه السلام) have this reward also there is no contradiction between visiting K'abab 7 visiting these places which you only play with words to justify your wahabi hatred toward Iran .

Anyway it’s your choice if you want to do ziyarah brother but you can’t say it’s not practiced my our imam (عليه السلام) without valid evidence.

We all know Daily prayer obligatory, Night prayer is one of the best prayers yet it’s not obligatory. We can say the same for Hajj and ziyarah.

Recommendation

The Arba'in of Imam al-Husayn (a) is the twentieth of Safar. In his books Tahdhib and MisbahAl-Shaykh al-Tusi narrates from Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari (a) that the signs of a believer are five:

  • Praying fifty-one rak'as each day, (Seventeen rak'as are the obligatory prayers, and 34 rak'as are the nafila prayers)
  • Ziyarat al-Arba'in
  • Wearing a ring on the right hand
  • Performing sujud on soil
  • Saying "Bism Allah al-Rahman al-Rahim" (In the name of God the all-beneficent the all-merciful) aloud in prayer.[1]

Method of Ziyara

Al-Shaykh al-Tusi has transmitted from Safwan al-Jammal in al-Tahdhib"[2]

"About ziyara al-Arba'in, my master Imam al-Sadiq (a) told me, 'when a part of the day is passed, recite this ziyara. (Click here to see the text)

Sheikh Tusi quoted from Imam Hasan Askari (عليه السلام) that the signs of a believer are five things, and one of them is the Zyarat Arbaeen. Allamah Majlisi (رضي الله عنه) about recommendation of Zyarat Arbaeen has mentioned most famous is that reason of recommendation , returning  the captives of Karbala to Karbala and joining the heads of the martyrs to their bodies by Imam Sajjad ((عليه السلام).) [2] He considered it unlikely that the captives would return to Karbala on the first Arbaeen and said that the pilgrimage of Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari may be recommendation aspect of the Zyarat Arbaeen . Since he was the first pilgrim to the grave of Imam Hussain ((عليه السلام).), it was considered mustahabb to visit him on the day of Arbaeen. From his point of view, it may be that the reason for the recommendation is the releasing of the captives of Karbala from captivity and imprisonment on this day. [3] Allameh Majlisi has quoted from Kaf'ami that the reason for naming the zyarat Arbaeen  is the time when it is the 20th of Safar and coincides with the 40th martyrdom of Imam Hussain. A)[4]

translation from Farsi source

During the period of Imam Sadiq ((عليه السلام).), the atmosphere became more open and even writing poetry and Marathi was encouraged, and poetry plays an important role in perpetuating the Karbala event and stimulating emotions. Therefore, he encourages people like Abu Amara Manshad,[4] Jafar bin Affan[5] and Abu Harun Makfouf[6] to write poems for Hazrat Abu Abd Allah al-Hussein (عليه السلام). During the time of Imam Reza ((عليه السلام).), we see that poets such as Di'bil Khuzāʿī [7] were noticed by the imam for writing Ashura poems. Also, the continuation of holding funeral gatherings in homes and expressing the virtue of reciting poetry in the mourning of Abi Abdullah ((عليه السلام).) and going to visit him in any condition and on various occasions and encouraging  to Zayart Arbaeen are some of the characteristics of this era.

[7] https://en.wikishia.net/view/Di'bil_b._'Ali_al-Khuza'i

The title "Zyarat Arbaeen " goes back to the time of Imam Sadiq ((عليه السلام).) and it is strange that despite the fear and fear of the oppressive government, people asked the Imam whether to go to the pilgrimage of Hazrat Seyyed al-Shahada despite the fear of informers and agents of the government. ? And the Imam said to go.[8] This is despite the fact that the Shia jurists in the issue of Hajj have stated that one of the conditions of ability is «تخلیه سرب»; It means that there must be security and if there is no security, the ability cannot be realized; But in the case of the pilgrimage of Seyyed al-Shahada ((عليه السلام).), even with the lack of security, people were encouraged to visit.

After this, it has been encouraged to visit him on various occasions. In the 14th volume of Wasa'il al-Shi'a, at the end of the book of Hajj, the pilgrimage occasions of Seyyed al-Shahada (عليه السلام) are mentioned[9]

In this section, we only mention its occasions and chapters in the Wasa'il:

Quote

Or in various occasions and situations:

(That is, even if you have to travel the sea by ship, it is still recommended to visit Sayyed al-Shahada (AS)[10] . or on special occasions and times[11]

Quote

But regarding the day of Arbaeen, we find this chapter in Volume 14 of Al-Wasa'il al-Shia[12]: "The chapter on emphasizing the importance of visiting Al-Husayn ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) on the day of Arbaeen, from his martyrdom, and on the day of the 20th,of Safar

It expresses the emphasis on recommendation that is mentioned here by bringing some narrations.

The meaning of Zyarah Arbaeen pilgrimage is the pilgrimage of Imam Hussain (عليه السلام) on the day of Arbaeen, due to numerous evidences from the statements of scholars from the time of Sheikh Mofid and Sheikh Tusi to the time of Seyyed Ibn Tawus and then Allameh Hilli, the first martyr, Kaf'ami, Sheikh Hurr Amili , the first and second Majlisi, and the same meaning is used in their words, and above this, Arbaeen pilgrimage is considered among the signs of a believer according to Imam Hassan Askari's ((عليه السلام).) order. Therefore, it can be said that before the martyrdom of Seyyed al-Shohda ((عليه السلام).)  Arbaeen has not a parade .

observing the 40th day of the Karbala epic and the martyrdom of Seyyed al-Shahda ((عليه السلام).) and his companions, and the enemies were never able to destroy it. In such a way that the Arbaeen pilgrimage, which was limited to a few dozen people, today has become the presence of millions of pilgrims. This point should also not be overlooked that even if Jabir did not come to Karbala, it would still be recommended to visit Sayyed al-Shahada ((عليه السلام).) on the day of Arbaeen.

Quote

Although Jaber has certainly come; Because the contents of Jabir's pilgrimage are very high and he has excellent teachings, and it is a theme that is completely consistent with the depth of Shia beliefs and shows the perfection of the knowledge of Mr. Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari, and it is not unlikely that Jabir bin Abdullah has taken both the principle of pilgrimage and the recommendation for pilgrimage iat  the day of Arbaeen from the imams and therefore he tried to reach Karbala on Arbaeen. Therefore, visiting Arbaeen and visiting Sayyid al-Shaheda ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) on the day of Arbaeen is fixed, and according to the exact interpretation of Sheikh Hurr  Amili, the recommendation of visiting his majesty on the day of Arbaeen is fixed.

So, there are two aspects on the day of Arbaeen: one is the fact that it is desirable to visit Sayyid al-Shahda ((عليه السلام).) on this day, which is the order of Imams of  guidance, and the other aspect is that Mr. Jabir managed to come to Karbala with [[mr]  'Atiyya al-'Awfi on this day and hasten to visit him.

https://en.wikishia.net/view/Atiyya_b._Sa'd_b._Junada_al-Awfi

The summary is that: Pilgrimage to Seyyed al-Shahda (عليه السلام) is always recommended, but in special places and times, it is doubly recommended, and the Ahl al-Bayt wanted to keep the name and memory of that majesty alive for various reasons. Therefore, they did something to make people remember Seyyed al-Shahada ((عليه السلام).) throughout the year and be with them. Being in that holy place has special effects and blessings; So much so that when Imam Hadi ((عليه السلام).) fell ill, even though he himself is the Imam and the authority of Allah, his majesty send people to Karbala to pray for him.

Finally, the place itself and the temporal and spatial conditions certainly have their effects, and in Arbaeen, this praise is doubled; Because it was guided by Ahl al-Bayt ((عليه السلام).) and has gradually become a Shia slogan.

Salam,

Thank you for your reply brother.

I still don't see any evidence of any of the Imams claiming to perform a physical Ziyarah or instructing their followers to perform a physical Ziyarah.

At best, there is weak evidence? of some sort of Ziyarah to recite (would like to validate the authenticity) but Arbaaen walks/ visits etc don't appear to have any basis in the Sunnah.

Dear brother, i am not a Wahabi or Salafi.

Shaykh Kamal Hayderi and Fadalallah, are also not Wahhabi or Salafis.

We are not saying it is bad to visit Imam al-Hussain, for let us visit him every day.

However, the argument here is, is there any precedent in the Sunnah for physically visiting , as well as these walks you see, and there really isn't any evidence.

I don't object to visiting on Arbaeen in and of itself, but the reality is, todays Shia's will prioritise this, over going to Umrah or saving up for Hajj.

That's when a Bidah like this is dangerous.

You speak to Shias and ask them, how many times have you gone to Ziyarah? You will hear, three, four, five, sometimes a dozen times.

You then ask them, what about the most magnamimous house of Allah, in it are the very roots of our monotheistic Abrahamic faith, K'aba built by Abraham and a holy blessed stone within it? What of the streets the Prophet walked on, the very mosque he prayed in? A house and a place sanctified and mentioned so many times by Allah, so holy and blessed is its Pilgrimage , we are mandated to perform it at least once?

Put aside the Hajj, what about experiencing this in an Umrah?

Often, you hear one number:

ZERO.

Please explain how it is distorted? The videos are of a good length and there is in the video a lot of context to remove doubt the words of the scholars are being made out of context.  The videos themselves are uploaded by Shias.

In fact, there is spiritual significance to some numbers and this is seen in the Qur’an and the traditions such that the number 40 is repeated in many places of the Qur’an:

﴿وَإِذْ وَاعَدْنَا مُوسَى أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ اتَّخَذْتُمُ الْعِجْلَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَأَنْتُمْ ظَالِمُونَ﴾

“And when We appointed a time of forty nights with Musa, then you took the calf (for a god) after him and you were unjust.” (Suratul Baqarah, 2: 51)

“He said: So it shall surely be forbidden to them for forty years, they shall wander about in the land, therefore do not grieve for the nation of transgressors.” (Suratul Maidah, 5:26)

“And We appointed with Musa a time of thirty nights and completed them with ten (more), so the appointed time of his Lord was complete forty nights, and Musa said to his brother Haroun: Take my place among my people, and act well and do not follow the way of the mischief-makers.” (Suratul A’raaf, 7:142)

“And We have enjoined on man doing of good to his parents; with trouble did his mother bear him and with trouble did she bring him forth; and the bearing of him and the weaning of him was thirty months; until when he attains his maturity and reaches forty years, he says: My Lord! grant me that I may give thanks for Thy favor which Thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do good which pleases Thee and do good to me in respect of my offspring; surely I turn to Thee, and surely I am of those who submit.” (Suratul Ahqaf, 46:15)

In addition, there are numerous traditions which mention the number “40” such as the following:

عن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه و آله و سلام): إنّ الأرض لتبكي على المؤمن أربعين صباحاً.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, has said: “Indeed the Earth laments over the death of a true believer for the period of 40 days.”

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, peace be upon him, has said: “Indeed the sky lamented over the death of al-Husayn for a period of 40 days.”

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: “The heavens cried for forty days with blood (weeping) over Imam Husayn; the earth cried for forty days by being covered with darkness; the sun cried for forty days by being in eclipse and turning red; the mountains were torn apart and dispersed; the seas gushed out and the angles cried for forty days over him. After Imam Husayn’s martyrdom, all of our women stopped colouring their hair, using kohl, applying oil, and styling their hair until the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyaad was sent to us; and even after that we (all) continued to weep over him.”

In summary, this all points to the reality that there is “something” contained in the visitation to Karbala 40 days after the tragic massacre of Imam al-Husayn, peace be upon him and his family, as the “40th” is not marked for any other Imam nor is it marked for any other Prophet – and perhaps if we are given the Divine Providence (tawfeeq) to be in Karbala on the 20th of Safar to pay our respects and condolences to the Prophet and the noble family on the supreme sacrifice offered on the 10th of Muharram 61 ah, then we may be able to benefit from the spiritual bounties contained in this spiritual journey to reach our Beloved.
