A vision of 2000 in 1960

He's not far off with the tech, except for the 3D tv.

He is far off with the idea of a 30-hour work week and month-long vacation (according to Americans in the comments below the video).

I get six weeks' holiday and bank holidays in addition.

I'm wondering if these kits can give false positives.

In my family's experience the tests are accurate. Most recent experience was me having covid a few weeks ago.

The gave negative results when there was no virus and positive ones where there was and better than that the second line was fairly weak when the virus was on its way out.

But you should check more widely.

How to spot liars

Quote

An investigation into the best way to identify lies has found that focusing on the level of detail in what people say, while ignoring all other cues, is the most successful method – but if liars know that, they might more easily deceive you.

"If this is a banquet, why is participating in it by force⁉️

God waited for us to go toward Him on our own during the year, but we didn’t. Therefore, He has invited us Himself to create an intimacy and to remove our fear. In this way, this good memory will take us back to Him in order to repeat this sweet experience in the future.

The God Who always waited for us to go toward Him ourselves, does not wait for His servants’ decision and action in this month. By making Ramadan a period that everyone must enter, it is as if He has come toward His servants Himself, grabs everyone’s hand and takes them toward His mercy.

A banquet by force is a combination of both the Almighty God’s greatness and His affection for His servants. God has given us enough freedom and choice in order for us to become good. But at the same time, we should realize that we have ruined ourselves and accept for God to pull us one step toward Himself. God compelling everyone in this way is due to His intense love for His servants."

Here in the US, the Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announced that Thursday, March 23, 2023, is the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

No but it’s officially announced by the shia community in the place where I live that the first day of Ramadan is today (Thursday) so yeah today Sunni and Shias are starting together.

I'm thinking about banking system in US, and I'm worried of my account. Silicon Valley and Signature banks collapsed, and it seems there are more banks struggling (even big ones). If you look at the stock prices, you'll see that all big banks are losing their stock value.

What do you do in these situations?

@Abu Hadiwill likely have a better answer since he lives there.

But you may find the following site useful:

https://www.fdic.gov

It spells out the level of Federal insurance for any deposits that you have and the limits.

Since that failure, I have read that the rate of new accounts being opened at the larger banks has increased dramatically, on the principle that they are too big to fail.

The problem with Silicon Valley Bank et al. is different than the problem with banks that happened in 2008. The problem, specifically with Silicon Valley Bank was that they pursued a very risky strategy of putting almost all their assets in invested in hold-to-maturity securities. These types of investments decrease in value as interests rates go up. So when interest rates went up, their assets decreased in value and one of the corps who had a large amount of their capital at this bank found out, then posted it online. When the investors found out, they pulled their money out of the bank all at once (90% of funds withdrew within 24 hours). This is a classic 'bank run' scenario, which no bank can survive. So they failed an they were taken over by the govt.

Most of the banks in the US don't use this strategy, so they are probably not going to fail. What might happen though, in the long term, is that bank become less profitable(this is why the stock price is decreasing). Banks only are profitable when people are in debt, so they earn money off the interest paid. This is their main source of income. When interest rates go up, the people that can pay off their debt instead of putting money in savings because this debt is costing them more money (because they are paying more interest). The people that can't afford to pay off their debt see their debt accumulate and some of these people end up filing for bankruptcy, and the bank loses money when people do this because they are not able to collect all the interest, and sometimes they even lose part of the principle on the loans they made.

This system of profit thru interest is an inherently unstable system, because it is unjust and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) states this in the Holy Quran. The ones who earn their money thru this unjust system (i.e. the banks) will eventually fail and collapse and the people who benefitted from this unjust system will be punished by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى). In the short term, however, it doesn't seem to me like this specific thing that happened at Silicon Valley bank and a few other banks will happen to all or most of the US Banks.

We have, however, seen the bailout of the Swiss Bank, Credit Suisse, by UBS.

And currently, the financial markets have Deutsche Bank in their sights.

This may take a while to play out. In the crash around 2008, there were weeks and even months between different defaults and bailouts.

Plenty of time for the NATO powers to start a war, in order to avoid responsibility for their own decisions. I am seriously concerned that this will be their next move.

Guest Please Dua For Me

Salam my dear brothers and sisters, I have a serious surgery tomorrow inshAllah. Please, please, please keep me in your prayers. I hope not only this surgery goes well, but it will take time for me to know whether it was successful or not. I am anxious but I have trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى). I am sure Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) will answer your prayers for my sake over someone as sinful as me... wasalam

I posted this question in another topic, but I wanna know what you guys think.

US tap water is not good. Do you drink spring water or purified water? I find spring water heavy. That's why I use purified one. Which one is better? Is there any other type which is healthier?

The Nashville shooter

Quote

Asked whether Hale’s [the shooter's] identity could be a factor in the motive, Drake said authorities “feel that she identifies as trans, but we’re still in the initial investigation into all of that and if it actually played a role into this incident.”

In online profiles Hale had indicated they used he/him pronouns and also went by the name Aiden.

It is unclear whether Hale identified as a man or woman at the time of the slayings.

Apocalyptic?

This opinion piece in the FT suggests that there are broader economic impacts to come (bold text mine) and not just to do with bank accounts:

We must also provide relief to that part of society which is least well equipped to handle these financially turbulent times. Those in the bottom half of income and wealth distribution are bystanders in the great balance-sheet reshuffle. They hold few, if any, financial assets and pay relatively little tax. They have lived the drama of Covid and its aftermath as a shock to jobs and a cost of living crisis. Unlike bondholders or investors, their interests are not represented by lobbyists. Their households are not too big to fail.

But if those who run the system imagine they can be ignored, that they are not systemically important, those elites should not be surprised by the strike waves and populist backlash coming their way.

In the US, most Muslims are rich middle class folk and identify more with billionaires than with commoners.  They're wrong.

I have seen this class dysphoria among the middle class everywhere. They think they are ruling class and shill for the billionaires, while in reality they are just one hospital bill away from poverty. Neoliberal indoctrination, I guess.
