Asalamu Alaykum

I want to start by saying that all my other fasts during the month of Ramadan from the last couple of years have successfully been done without me masturbating once.

However I seem to have had the most trouble this one, one thing led to another and it led to me masturbating at midnight.

I am deeply ashamed, disgusted and disappointed with myself. I want to know if there is a way to make up for it by doing extra prayers, fasting extra or perhaps even hitting my right hand until it turns red.

This is Haraam. In Islam you cannot get yourself injured as punishment.

I make dua for you. Try to marry soon. If it's not possible, try to focus on other topics, spend more time with family and friends, etc. Avoid being alone especially those times that you feel it strong. I remember a muslim guy who started walking at the middle of the night at home. I asked him:" What are you doing at this time?" He said:" Wrong thoughts came into my mind, and I was afraid I may do something wrong". You're probably young. You are at the best age and look and strength. Build your relationship with Allah and focus on your future especially marriage. I really wish you the bests. It seems you're a Mumin Muslim alhamdulillah.

Yes. But I believe the Islamic jurist does have the authority to hit the sinners hand until it turns red, like the way Imam Ali (عليه السلام) did to a man who masturbated using his hand.

Look, when one does a sin, he/she should hide it and repent.

Don't spread the sin by saying that in public or hit yourself as punishment. This is a wrong behavior islamically.

Imam Ali(عليه السلام) has this authority over the people living within his Imamate. You don't have this authority over yourself. You are not an Imam or Prophet

Like others have said do Tauba and ask Allah to give you the ability to leave this sin and do this sincerely and keep doing it. If u are sincere then you will leave this sin eventually provided you keep sincerely asking Allah

I didn't say I have authority over myself. And anyway, I'm not the person who started this topic.

I said the Islamic jurist / Islamic judge has the authority to punish a sinner (if criteria are met) - based on the punishment given by Imam Ali (عليه السلام) to the man who masturbated.

I didn't say that the one who masturbated should punish himself like that, or go to a jurist to get himself punished.

Having said that, there is an incidence where a young man was found rolling himself on the ground with it's hot sand burning his body. The Prophet (s) saw that man and asked him the reason for his strange behavior. He replied that he was afraid of the fire of hell and wanted to teach himself a lesson by burning his body in this world. The Prophet (s) did not object to his action and even appreciated him, as far as I know.

Again, I'm not advocating that someone who masturbates should injure his body... however, the thought of repenting in this manner (without implementing it practically) may be praise worthy and may show how regretful, remorseful the sinner is.

Salam this is result of concluding from incomplete story which according to Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) , Imam Ali (عليه السلام) after punishing that man immediatley provided marriage for that man by spending  money from treasury of Muslims .

Again in similar fashion it's concluding from an incomplete report which complete story is about sincere repentance of

Mu'adh ibn Jabal was in tears when he arrived in the presence of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) and greeted him. The Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) replied to his greeting and asked: "What makes you cry?"

"At the door of the mosque, there is a good-looking youth who weeps as intensely as a mother whose young son has died, and he wishes to meet you," replied Mu'adh ibn Jabal

The Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) agreed to meet him.

The youth entered and greeted the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) who returned his greeting and enquired: "Why do you weep?"

"Why should I not weep? I have committed sins which Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) will never forgive and He is bound to hurl me into Hell," said the youth.

"Have you associated someone with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى)?"

"No."

"Have you killed anybody?"

"No."

"Even if your sins are of the magnitude of mountains, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) shall forgive them," said the Noble Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).

"My sins are greater than the mountains," the youth explained.

"Are your sins in the magnitude of the seven earths, the seas, the sands, the trees, all that lies on the earth, in the skies, the stars, the Throne and the Chair?" asked the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P).

"My sins are greater than all of these things."

"Woe unto you! Are your sins greater than your Lord?"

The youth lowered his head and replied, "Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) is devoid of all blemishes; it is my Lord, who is greater."

"Would you not relate one of your sins to me?" enquired the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P).

"Why not?" responded the youth, whose name was Buhlul. "For seven years I used to dig up the graves of the newly buried, take out their shrouds and sell them. One night, a maiden from amongst the Ansar (The Helpers) died and was buried in the cemetery. When I dug open her grave to remove the shroud from her body, the Shaitan (Satan) tempted me and I committed a grave sin. As I was turning back, the body called out to me: "O' Youth! Don't you fear the Ruler of the Day of Judgment? Woe unto you of the fire of the Day of Judgment!"

Having narrated this, the youth wanted to know what he should do to avoid punishment.

Buhlul, the Gravedigger: Seeking Forgiveness (Al-Istighfaar, Istighfar)"O' Sinner! Stay away from me for I fear that I might burn in your fire too!" cried out the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P).

The youth, Buhlul left, heading straight towards the mountains. He tied his hands to his neck and became engrossed in worship, supplications and seeking forgiveness.

For forty days, he wept day and night to the extent that even the wild beasts were affected by his weeping. After forty days he asked Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) to either punish him by means of fire or forgive him, so that he might not have to face humiliation on the Day of Judgment.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) revealed the following verse, which refers to the forgiveness of Buhlul: "And those who, when they commit an indecency or do injustices to their souls, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their faults and who forgives the faults but Allah..." Noble Qur'an (3:135)

The Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) recited this verse with a smiling face and then asked: "Who can take me to that youth?"

Mu'adh ibn Jabal agreed to take him. Accompanied with Mu'adh ibn Jabal, the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) went to the place where the youth was. The Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) saw him standing between two boulders, hands tied to his neck and engaged in supplication. His face had become dark due to the scorching sun and all his eyelashes had fallen off due to the intense weeping. Wild beasts had gathered around him while the birds circled over his head, all of them weeping over his distressed and pitiable state.

The Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) advanced towards him, untied his hands and cleared the soil from the top of his head.

"O' Buhlul! Glad tidings for you; you have been liberated by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) from the fire (of Hell)," the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) said.

Then, turning to his companion (Sahaba), Mu'adh ibn Jabal the Noble Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) said, "This is how you should make amends for your sins."

Regret at the Time of Death

The book Kitab Sulaym b. Qays quoted 'Abd al-Rahman b. Ghanam al-Azdi al-Thumali (Mu'adh's father-in-law) as saying that when Mu'adh was about to die, he expressed his regret for his positions about the successor of the Prophet (s); for not supporting household of the Prophet (s) and supporting, instead, the First and the Second caliphs.[12]

How to Overcome Various Marriage Problems?

https://www.imamreza.net/old/eng/imamreza.php?id=7577

Indeed, it is possible that sometimes a person has regretted over his mistake and repented genuinely but he has been tempted by Satan and made to commit the same sin again, in which case, it is necessary for him to repent once again. In any case, you should never despair of God's mercy and you should know that even if you break your tawbah (repentance) a hundred times, the gate of divine mercy is still open to you.

Thank you for your post, but I already knew that Imam Ali (عليه السلام) immediately provided marriage for that man. I did not mention that in my post because the punishment of masturbation by hitting the hand and then solution of getting him married both were individualized decisions for that particular man in that exact circumstance. It doesn't mean that the Islamic jurist is obligated to follow the exact same ruling for every man who masturbates. Also, some men masturbate without using their hands so perhaps it would not even make sense to hit their hands when the hands have not done anything wrong in the first place.

What I said was that based on this action of Imam Ali (عليه السلام), a jurist may (but not necessarily) decide to punish someone who masturbates [(if he believes the criteria are the same as that man who was punished by Imam Ali (as)].

I have read this incident before but it isn't the one I was referring to. The story I mentioned involved a man who was found rolling on the hot sand and when he was asked why he was doing that, he stated that he feared the fire of hell, so he wanted to warn himself by experiencing the hot sand of this world. The Prophet (s) appreciated his action.

Based on these two incidents, I believe if a man who has masturbated wishes to punish himself by hitting his hand, his intention and sincerity for repentance may be praiseworthy, although he would still be asked to not actually put that into action.

Salam punishment for doing masturbation is in level of Ta'zir (Discretionary punishment) which is determined by the Sharia ruler anyway I have not found any evidence that any jurist has punished sinner with beating based on this story which main point in story is helping sinner to overcome his problem by marriage even by allocating The budget of Bait-Mal for marriage rather than brutal punishment .

How it is Proved and What is its Punishment

Masturbation is proved by testimony of two just men[14] or admission of the committer twice and even once.[15] Some early scholars did not consider one time admission, enough for proving it.[16]

Punishment of masturbation is ta'zir (discretionary punishment), the amount and manner of which is determined by the Sharia ruler.[17] In case of repeating it, a stronger punishment will be determined for it.[18]

https://en.wikishia.net/view/Masturbation

Ta'zīr (Arabic: التَعْزیر) is a discretionary punishment for crimes for which no specific punishment is stated in Islam and it is left to the sharia ruler to specify its type and amount.

Quote

Ta'zir includes any punishment that inhibits a criminal from repeating the criminal act. Thus, it includes punishments such as imprisonment, fines, and confiscation of one's property. However, some jurists maintain that ta'zir only includes physical punishments.

It is also associated with the issue of enjoining the right and forbidding the wrong. However, unlike enjoining the right, ta'zir is a type of punishment and can only be carried out by the sharia ruler.[5]

Ta'zir can be forgiven, unlike hadd.[6]

Also some jurists have claimed that the Prophet (s) and Imam 'Ali (a) had the tradition of performing ta'zir for people who abandoned a jurisdictional obligation or committed a forbidden action when there was no hadd for it.[14] According to Shiite hadiths, ta'zir is introduced as a punishment for some sins in different ways,[15] such as whipping,[16] imprisonment, and moving the person around the community.[17]

Jurisdictional Ta'zir

A jurisdictional ta'zir is a sort of punishment that is enforced against people who violate jurisprudential rulings, such as abandoning an obligation or committing a forbidden action.[18] Some crimes that provoke jurisdictional ta'zirs include:

  • Illegitimate relations other than sexual intercourse (zina), such as kissing and sleeping together.[19]
  • Humiliating and desecrating others.
  • Cursing.[20]
  • Unfounded accusations.[21]
  • A theft in which the conditions of hadd do not obtain.
  • Masturbation[22]
  • A child's theft.[23]

Governmental Ta'zir

Punishments specified for people who violate governmental laws and regulations are called "governmental ta'zirs". Such ta'zirs include actions such as hoarding, overcharging in sales, and fraudulent dealings with regard to measures and weights.[24]

Ways of Punishment

There is a disagreement among jurists as to whether ta'zirs include any kind of punishment or it is restricted to physical punishments.[25] Some Shiite jurists maintain that ta'zir includes any punishment that inhibits a criminal from doing the crime again

This is certainly a false story because islam یoesn't approve such self harming actions which certainly prophet Muhammad (pbu) wouldn't approve such thing .

There are situations where self-harming has been approved by Islam. Awais qurni broke his teeth out of love of the Prophet (s) and his action was not condemned by the Prophet.

Salam this is a too weak report which has been refuted by many shia scholars which only pro-Tatbir grouplets use such weak reports to justify their wrong actions.
