Use this thread for any Ramadhan / fasting related issues and questions.

This post has a lot of useful material

Why am I posting this several days in advance? I came across this tweet, which I thought was worth sharing. Apologies to the anti-Big Pharma crowd here.

Salam. A recent email received from Imam Mahdi Association of Marjaeya (I.M.A.M.):

In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

A final reminder before the Holy Month of Ramadan 1444 A.H. on some of the rulings regarding Qada (make-up) fasts and offering Fidyah and Kaffarah (expiation for missing fasts)

قبل حلول رمضان: أهم أحكام القضاء والفدية والكفارة

It is well known that a person who misses a fast during the month of Ramadan is required to make it up. In addition, sometimes such cases require offering a fidyah and/or a kaffarah as well.

Therefore, we draw the attention of the believers to some of the most important rules regarding qada fasts, fidyah, and kaffarah, as we approach the holy month of Ramadan.

Click here to read our complete reminder.

May God accept your fasts and good deeds, and may every year grant you the best of health and spirits.

I.M.A.M.

Happy Ramadan, everyone!

I wasn’t able to fast for a few years because I had a thyroid problem and an abscess in my tooth. But I hope I’ll be able to fast this year.

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmat Allah Wa Barakatuh

I have just received a whatsapp message that said that Sayyed Al Sistani says tomorrow, Thursday, will be Ramadan.

Can anyone confirm this? I didn't see anything on Imam Ali London foundation / Najaf.org website, nor statements on Sayyed Sistani website.

Yes, this is true (for those in North America).

Announcement Concerning:

The Crescent Moon of the Holy Month of Ramadan, 1444 A.H.

To the respected believers in North America,

Peace be upon you.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Thursday, March 23rd, 2023, will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, 1444 A.H. for the entire region of North America.

This determination is based on the fact that there were verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023 in many locations.

Ramadan Mubarak! We ask God, the Most High, to accept your fasting, grant success in performing good deeds, and to hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p).

On behalf of the Crescent Committee,
Sayyid M. Rizvi, Secretary-General

Imam al-Khamenei (h) has also said that Thursday is the 1st of the month of Ramadan for Iran.

Quote

Based on the reports of observation groups working across the country for the Headquarters for Sighting the New Moon of the Imam Khamenei's Office, the new moon signaling the start of the month of Ramadan was sighted in Iran Wednesday evening. Thus, Thursday, March 23, 2023, will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

Wa alaykum salam,

Imam Ali London foundation displayed a message that “the sighting of crescent by the naked eye has not been proven by the Imam Ali Foundation in Europe, but astronomical centres confirm its existence and the possibility of sighting, so whoever is reassured should fast tomorrow as the first of Ramadan, otherwise to intend it to be the last day of Sha’ban”. The website went down later in the evening and still displays an error message even know. I have a screenshot of the announcement I’ve shared but don’t know how to post it. I hope this helps.

Salamu alaikum everyone, I hope you are all fine during Ramadan.

I have a question, My father cannot fast because he had nicotine dependence, he didn’t fast for many years, I remember when he fasts, he use to get aggressively with us specifically with my mother.

What’s the ruling regarding this issue? How can my father fast even tho it’s very hard for him?

From what I know, he has the option to use a nicotine patch.

They are available over the counter and not expensive

Here is one I found online

https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/walgreens-clear-nicotine-patches-step-1-21mg/day/ID=300408336-product?ext=gooFY23_GOO_SF_UA_OB%2BSmoke%2BCess%2BJan-March_REV_SRC_PMAX_PMAX_NA_PLA_EN_&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8e-gBhD0ARIsAJiDsaUE9Dr_s5Y-ML2w20ZeoIH5xoDUJLGedTw_c8ifgc67dfDsgA_LUR0aAmZzEALw_wcB

He can use this to 'curb' the nicotine craving and still fast. As this patch is not food, has no nutritional value and does not enter the body thru the normal route (i.e. mouth, nose, etc) it does not break the fast to use it. Since it is nicotine, it is also not considered an 'intoxicant' as nicotine is not classified this way in Fiqh. He should use the patch and still fast, again from what I know. If I am wrong, someone please post a corrected response.

Salam everyone, how is the holy month going on with you?

I know some brothers who always nag when it come to fasting, as if allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) forced us to fast. It is disturbing because the holy month is not only about not eating, but it's about our mental health too as well as building our relationship with allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى).

There is a possibility that parts of the US and Canada will have Eid on different days due to seeing/not seeing the new crescent moon of Shawwal. Read the following message carefully if you live in the US or Canada.

Advance Announcement Concerning Eid al-Fitr 1444/2023

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Advance Announcement for Eid al-Fitr 1444/2023

بيان تمهيدي بخصوص وضعية هلال عيد الفطر ١٤٤٤ اضغط هنا للتفاصيل

To all believers in North America,

Peace be upon you, and may Almighty Allah accept your fasting and all your good deeds in this blessed month.

With respect to determining the day of Eid al-Fitr this year, based on the criteria for the visibility of the crescent, the Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America would like to bring to your attention that there is a high likelihood that the Shawwal crescent will be seen with the naked eye in much of the continental United States and southern Canada.

Although the final determination will depend on actual sighting reports after sunset on Thursday, April 20 (29th of Ramadan), the following guidance is intended to help you prepare for Eid.

The visibility curve on Thursday night includes most of the United States and Canada, including Toronto. However, New York City, Boston, Ottawa, and Montreal are outside the visibility curve.

Based on this data, a reasonable prediction gives confidence that for most of the United States and southern Canada including Toronto, Eid will be on Friday, April 21 and for the above cities and areas to the north and east of them, Eid will be on Saturday, April 22 according to the Multiplicity of Horizons ruling. The final declaration about the cities excluded above, however, will depend on the location of the sighting.

Therefore, we advise people to make arrangements to take off from work, school, and other commitments on Friday so they can attend the Eid prayers.

Allah states in the Holy Quran, “… Cooperate in piety and Godwariness, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression, and be wary of Allah” [5:2]

On behalf of the Moon-Sighting Committee
Sayyid Mohammad Rizvi

Reminds me of a Ramadan in the past where Malaysians said they had Eid prayer and Eid feast and the next day they traveled by ferry to Singapore and participated in Eid prayer again and Eid feast.  NushajAn
