Decisions

My 15 year old Honda is now starting to give up on life. It's only done 140k miles, which is a bit less than I was expecting.

Anyway, the wife is now making noises about a new car. Ideally, she'd like a prestige German brand, but that's not going to happen. I did not pick up on the cultural significance of her father's family being from Delhi, but there you go. It's in the genes, my son when he was aged 5 went up to a VW Golf (original design) in a car park and stroked it. 'Cool car' he said.

Anyway.

We've been looking at the VW id.3 (used). For 20k on the clock you can get a less specc'd model for about £18k. These are cars that were bought a few years ago on finance and have been returned to the dealership at the end of the finance deal. I'd be looking to pay cash.

Today we went to the local VW dealer who also sells BYD (the Chinese brand). You can get a cheap (new) BYD model for around £27k, but it's on 0% finance for 4 years. At the end you pay a balancing amount.

It's a base model, but its specs would put many other manufacturers (European/American) to shame.

I would not dream of buying this car (no pun intended), but the 0% finance is making it look very attractive.

I asked the salesperson about this brand versus the German ones and she said that salespeople working for their German and South Korean models were looking to move to the dealership that sells BYD.

try not to purchase cars that support the Zionist entity, if it's used then that's ok. Btw since the day you posted about the car zeekr, I have been dreaming about it. Inshallah next year I will be purchasing it if I have the money to do so.

Tesla's reaction to Cybertruck explosion shows EV company can remotely unlock, monitor and spy on its EVs

The recent Tesla Cybertruck explosion highlights the company’s ability to remotely access and monitor its vehicles, raising questions about owner privacy and surveillance

Quote

While the company’s ability to assist law enforcement in such emergencies is being praised, it raises larger questions about data privacy and the growing trend of cars essentially spying on their users. The event serves as a stark reminder that advanced connectivity in vehicles may come at the cost of individual ownership and privacy.

Unlocking cars remotely and sharing data

In the aftermath of the explosion, law enforcement revealed how Tesla’s CEO remotely unlocked the damaged Cybertruck to aid investigators. The company also provided footage from Tesla charging stations across the country to help track the vehicle’s movements. These capabilities underscore Tesla’s control over its vehicles, including their location data and telemetry.

Beyond emergencies: Everyday surveillance

Tesla’s remote access abilities aren’t the only feature that have raised concerns. The vehicles’ reliance on proprietary systems makes repairs difficult for independent shops, and features like “full self-driving” can only be unlocked through costly subscriptions

Reports have also surfaced of Tesla employees misusing onboard cameras to spy on customers. Additionally, law enforcement increasingly sees Teslas as valuable sources of video footage at crime scenes.

As cars become smarter and more connected, the line between convenience and intrusion continues to blur. For Tesla owners and others driving modern vehicles, the Cybertruck explosion serves as a wake-up call to reassess who really holds the keysnot just to their car, but to their data and privacy.

Yes.

I was sharing details with my brother about the BYD and this is what he said.

So I sent him a pic of Mum outside the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square.

All the privacy, range, and price concerns are valid. Just search how difficult it is for firemen to extinguish EV fire coming from the batteries. Plus all the environmental and recycling concerns that come with their batteries is another major issue. Some countries claim to move towards EVs for environmental reasons, but same countries burn diesel even charcoal to produce electricity. How it gonna save the environment?

About 2/6 Uber taxis we’ve taken in Cairo are BYD’s. Small and unrepresentative sample, perhaps.

You remember the charge time criticism ...?

Quote

On Monday, Wang Chuanfu, the Shenzhen-based group’s billionaire founder, unveiled a new charging system that could add about 470km in range to BYD’s batteries in just five minutes. The release of the so-called Super e-Platform has thrust BYD to the front of an industry-wide race to develop battery cells for electric vehicles that will make refuelling EVs as fast as filling up cars with petrol or diesel. It follows the February announcement of its “God’s Eye” advanced driver-assistance system being made available on all its models for free.
