I was looking at the Zahra Trust Khums calculator and saw one of the blank fields is "Remainder on last years savings on which khums was already paid"

What does this mean? I refer to Ayotallah Sistani and wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything. Does this refer to the full amount of Khums I paid in the previous year? Please keep in mind I am referring to this for those individuals who are salaried workers. My assumption is it is referring to the full amount of Khums paid the previous year but, please correct me if I am wrong. An example being, if I paid $30.00 for Khums last year as a total, that same amount would be in that field. Any input is appreciated.

No I believe this is referring to the amount of money that was left in your account the previous year once you paid your khums.

This is then probably compared to your current balance and the difference would then be the amount used to calculate your khums.

So if I had 5500 last year and then paid 500 khums the remaining amount would be 5000.

If I now have 7000 one year later my gain was 2000 and my khums will be 400.

This leaves me at 6600 which will then be used in next years calculation.

Pardon my math but, where does the 6600 come from?

To confirm your example above, if one paid Khums for 2021 last December and is now going to pay for 2022 today (last day of western calendar year)does the 6600 apply to the 2022 calculation for today? Or 2023 for the field fields is "Remainder on last years savings on which khums was already paid." Apologies for the multiple questions.

Sorry. I think I understand now after the math. So I basically do not need to calculate a great deal.

The calculator field " Remainder on last years savings on which Khums is already paid" is simply the number left after paying Khums the previous year, which would be used to fill in that field. So for example, if I paid Khums last year and had $100 left afterwards paying, that $100 would be put under "Remainder on last years savings on which Khums is already paid." Is this correct?

Salam everyone, just a clarification, we pay khum once a year but when do we start? I started working on 1st of November 2022, so that means I should pay my khums on 1st of Nov 2023?

I want to ask:  does Zahra trust have ijazah of various maraj'i like they claim? I just discovered them yesterday, and I want to verify. Does anyone from Pakistan here pay their khums to them?

I might become eligigible for paying khums this year, and I want to make double sure that it's going to the right place.

Salam it's not necessary to start it based on time of starting your work which you can assign any time so then next year at your asigned time you can pay your Khums.

Khumsi Year

Main article: Khums year
Quote

If one has had no khumsi year, the best thing to do is to refer to marja's office or one of his representatives.

Any mature person has to specify a day to calculate khums of his whole year. Some marja' think khumsi year starts as soon as one receives money or a property (gift, salary, and so on). Some others believe the first day of an occupation or the time of receiving first salary and income must be considered as the beginning of khumsi year.[19] As one year passes from the specified day, it is the time of calculating khums. According to the fatwas of most marja's khums must be calculated as the following:

  • Quote

Consumable materials such as food and the like (which will finish after some time). If there remained an excess of them, one fifth (khums) of them must be exchanged to money at their current price and paid as khums. Those things that remain for a longer time and are needed (like carpet, refrigerator, vehicles and so on) are not included for paying khums even if they are purchased with the income during the year; nevertheless, if they are bought with the income earned at the end of the year, whose one fifth (khums) is not paid yet, one fifth of them (khums) must be paid.[20]

If one has had no khumsi year, the best thing to do is to refer to marja's office or one of his representatives.

Some Points

Quote

An unemployed person, who makes a deal and gains profit, after one year, must pay one fifth of the amount of profit which is surplus to the annual expenses.[21] There is a difference of opinion among marja's on the issue of khums for some earnings such as gift, bank prizes and so on.

In some cases, when the time of paying khums comes, the person may not be able to pay the whole or part of it; on the other hand, utilizing the money and property whose khums must be paid is prohibited. Marja' or his representative take khums from the person so that he does his religious duty perfectly and is free to use his money and property which is halal. After that, they return khums partly or completely to the person as though they are lending it to him, and the person must pay it back after his financial problem is resolved. This process is called dast gardan.[22]

  • If one has spent more than what is needed during the year, he should pay khums of that amount.
  • If we are doubtful whether the host has paid khums of his earnings, we must not inquire and it is not haram to eat from his food.
