Was it true Umar was lefthanded

Quote

His description, may Allah be pleased with him: he was a tall man, bald, left-handed...

(Source: Al-Bidayeh wa al-Nihayeh, Ibn al-Kaseer, Vol. 7, P. 156)

Quote

Imam Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy upon him) mentioned he was left-handed as well.

By some accounts, he was left handed, while others report him to be ambidextrous.

were there any left handed shias in history?

Imam Khamenei (q) cannot use his right hand because it's paralyzed... that's probably the closest to a left-handed shia that I know.

left-handed people are very intelligent

Not all left-handed people are intelligent. Even if most left-handed people are smarter than most right-handed people (which I'm pretty sure isn't true), it doesn't apply to all of them.

Besides, intelligence in and of itself is not a reason for us to respect someone. For example, if someone is arrogant, their intelligence is deficient. Look at this 7adees from Imam al-Baqer (عليه السلام):

".ما دخل قلب امرئ شئ من الكبر إلا نقص من عقله مثل ما دخله من ذلك، قل ذلك أو كثر"

"If any amount of arrogance enters the heart of a person, it will only bring deficiency to the intellect with the same amount of what entered it, whether it be a little or a lot."

(Source: Meezan al-7ikmah, Vol. 3, P. 179)

There are various more examples of ways that intelligence is cancelled out by a vice/bad character trait.

Not really the topic here, but just going to point out for any lefties reading this who feel like freaks because of some of the narrations and such:

Those texts were obviously speaking to the 90% majority and don’t realistically apply to left-handed people. It was a simple matter of right-handed people cleaning in the bathroom with the left, and doing more noble things with the other, more nimble hand (I’m not going to use the word dextrous here, because the word carries the right-handed bias within it; anyone who’s taken a Chem course that includes organic will recall that dextro- is Latin for right).

Obviously for a lefty it’s just going to be the opposite division of labor.

In short, these texts about what should be done with the right and what with the left, it seems to just be rules of thumb based on hygiene and the majority pattern. There’s nothing inherently evil about the left hand.
