Purity of semen

The semen is najis, and in some cases, its discharge from the body invalidates the fast.

Jurisprudential fatwas are concerned with the discharge of semen via ejaculation and orgasm. But from a medical point of view, semen might come out of the body in some diseases (such as prostatosis) or in some normal conditions (such as morning urination that contains spermatozoon or pressure on urethra and relevant glands), but from a jurisprudential viewpoint, such semen counts as clean.

Other Fluids

Other than urination and semen, some other fluids also come out of an adult: "madhy", "wadhy", and "wady".

A fluid coming out of the body after a low degree of sexual arousal or flirtation is called "madhy" which is clean and does not invalidate the fast. Madhy is a fluid that is slightly sticky and viscous and usually comes out after sexual arousal (such as seeing an arousing scene, or thinking about it, or seeing and talking to a person of the opposite gender, or having fun with one's wife). If this fluid is not mixed with urine, it is clean and it does not invalidate ghusl and wudu.

"Wadhy" is a fluid that sometimes comes out of the body after the discharge of the semen. If it is not mixed with semen or urine, it is clean and it does not require ghusl.

"Wady" is a fluid that sometimes comes out after urination and looks like semen, but since it does not have the signs of semen discharge, it does not count as semen, and if it is not mixed with urine, it is clean.

  • Semen is najis and it is forbidden to swallow.
  • The intentional discharge of semen from the body (either via sexual intercourse or via masturbation) invalidates the fast.
  • The discharge of semen from the body requires ghusl of janaba.
  • There are different views about whether semen of animals is najis or not. Some scholars take the semen of animals with blood that gushes forth when their large vein is cut to be najis; others take halal animals to have najis semen, and some others take haram animals to have najis semen.

so there is no single scholar who thinks different on the impurity of semen?

Salam alykum all shia scholars agree on impurity of Semen without any exception.

Why do Shiites consider semen najis, but Sunnis do not consider it najis?

The disagreement in this regard is based on the acceptance or non-acceptance of the religious authority of the Ahl al-Bayt.

What is considered impure in Islam is common to almost all Islamic religions, but the Sunnis do not consider semen impure.
Sayyid Morteza, in his statement about the impurity of semen, says: "Among the fatwas that are specific to the Shiites, impurity is semen that does not disappear except by washing; Because Abu Hanifa, although he accepts impurity, but in his opinion, by rubbing dried of it, the impurity is removed; And Shafi'i also considers it pure. However, the opinion narrated from Malik that he considers it impure and considers it necessary to wash it does not agree with the Shiite opinion; Because he  in any of the impurities; Does not consider washing obligatory; Rather, he considers washing to be Mustahab; But Shiites; Considers it obligatory to wash it; "And we have brought up the issue on this issue in disputes and rejected the views of the opposition with sufficient evidence." [1]
Yes! As stated by Seyyed Morteza; The opinion of the Sunnis about the impurity and non-impurity of semen is as follows:
Shafi'is: Human semen, whether alive or dead, is clean if it comes out after the age of nine; Even if it is in the form of blood; Of course, if the ejaculation in this case is normal (not unusual); Otherwise it is impure; And the reason for its purity is the narration narrated from Bayhaqi who asked the Messenger of Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) about the semen that has reached the clothes; So they said: It is like saliva or nosewater. [2]
Hanbalians: Man's semen is pure; If it comes out in the normal way and for pleasure and after the end of nine years in girls and ten years in boys; Even if it comes out in the form of blood; And to purify it, they reffer  to words of Aisha who said: I used to rub semen on the clothes of the Messenger of Allah, then the Prophet went to prayer and prayed in the same clothes. [3]
But according to the narrations that have reached the Prophet ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) about the impurity of semen through the Ahl al-Bayt, it is that semen is impure. Ibn Abi Ya'fur narrates from Imam Sadiq (AS): I asked him about the clothes he wore; Has semen hit? He said: "If you know the position that semen has shed; where is it? Wash the same place with water, and if you do not know; clear All clothes with water ". [4]
Therefore, the disagreement in this regard is based on the acceptance or non-acceptance of the religious authority of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Why is "semen", which is the foundation of human creation, declared as something low and worthless from the point of view of the Qur'an?

ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُ مِن سُلَالَةٍ مِّن مَّاءٍ مَّهِينٍ ‎﴿٨﴾

Then He made his progeny from an extract of a base fluid. (8)

أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّاءٍ مَّهِينٍ ‎﴿٢٠﴾‏

Have We not created you from a base fluid, (20)

Obviously, this worthless substance is also a wonderful creature from Allah and one of the signs of His power and wisdom, but why did Allah mention this creature like this? It should be said that the target of these expressions are the deniers and rejectors of the divine revelations and the arrogant ones, and it is for humiliating and threatening the infidels and refers to the influence of the power, greatness and creation of Allah Almighty; Therefore, he addresses man with his rebuke, whether we did not create human beings from an immensely weak semen.
In fact, these interpretations are in line with the expression of power and also a warning for human humiliation; A threatening address to the idolaters and infidels on how to fight against the divine  realm, while Allah has created every human being from a filthy, rotten and stinking genitals; From semen which is considered as filth and man hates and avoids it [4] or at most it has no value for him.
Thus, verses and narrations of this kind are in the position that the high value of a human being does not depend on his body, which starts from rotten matter and carries dirt throughout his life and will eventually turn into a corpse, but his value depends on faith. And it is his good deeds.
