Salaam Aleikum everyone,

I have a question regarding incense sticks on a persons grave after they have passed. Is this something we should do? Is it recommended? Is there any Quranic References or Hadiths on this subject? My reason for asking is my father has recently passed. I arrived at the Graveside and found my brother at his grave and he had covered it in incense sticks apparently to send him sawaab because the Imams tell us to do so.

I would appreciate any answers on this subject.

In Islam death doesn’t mean ending, it’s just transition from realm of Dunya to a higher realm of realities called Barzakh. The next transitions after this are realm of Hashr, the judgement day and then after that the realm of Jannah InshAllah.

Many things that attract goodness, such as  good mood, holiness, and angels of mercy are same among many realms.

Good fragrances, same as being in the state of Wudhu at all times, being ritually clean, wearing clean clothes, keeping your room clean, keeping your body clean, and many more things - attract angels of mercy, the positive energies, good emotional state, good mental state, and higher spiritual state that eventually help us in achieving closeness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى).

Burning incense on the graves is one such thing. It’s highly recommended in Islam to keep your homes fragranced, by the same token once our dear ones leave this world, we try to do the same on their graves since it becomes their new temporary homes.

Salam I have not found anything about covering grave by incense sticks but on the other hand there are some recommendations about putting candles or lamps on graves based on philosophy  of that remembering  deceased  & enjoyment  of their souls & not forgetting  them which is a good practice which has no problem  which putting incense sticks over graves is tradition  Buddhist  likewise in Japan , China & Korea for repelling evil spirits & honoring deceased which has no record  in Shia traditions & narrations .

3- Lighting the lamp on the top of the grave to visit the owner of the grave, recite the Qur'an, pray, offer prayers and other benefits that the pilgrim can take there, in these cases it is not only forbidden and disgusting, but also preferable, because It is one of the examples of cooperation on goodness &  piety.

In a narration from Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) about the pilgrimage to the graves, it is said that since you are among the graves, recite Surah Qul Hu  va Allah  (Al-Ikhlas) eleven times and give its reward to their souls, because whoever performs this act, All in number  deceased will give  him  Sawab (blessing) and rewards.

Reciting Surah Al-Hamad (Fatiha al-Kitab) and reciting 7 times "Ana Anzalnah fi Layla al-Qadr" according to the narrations, has desirable and useful effects on the dead and expansion in their   situation . In general, reading the Holy Quran is useful for the dead  on their behalf, and whatever good deeds you do and give its reward to the soul of the dead; Whether it is dhikr, Qur'an, recommended prayers and asking for forgiveness, or charity. A person who performs an action for a corpse, although he must intend to represent it with  intention of nearness to Allah , but most of its reward according to the narrations - is also written in his action letter. Of course, it also causes the corpse to be acquitted and he is saved from torment and suffering.

The late Hajj Sheikh Abbas Qomi in Mafatih al-Jannan, p317. Deceased  becomes  happy & joyful & finds expansion through  doing Dua & Istigfar in similar fashion which living person becomes  happy by receiving  gifts[ when he receives the gift ] the reward of prayer, fasting, Hajj, charity and other good deeds and prayers will be entered   into the grave of the dead and its reward will be written   for both of the dead & reciter .  There are other narrations that you can read, so be sure that what you give to your dead will reach them if you are sincere, and the reward will be recorded in your deed.
