Do Shia converts join the mosque and get registered as members when they take the shahadah in a shia mosque?

Registered? What's that? Like put on a list? Why?

Why would anyone want to do that? How is "a member" different from anyone else in the community?

I think the brother is talking about countries where someone's religion is registered with the government. There are some countries, like Lebanon for example, where your religion and even your religious affiliation (Shia/Sunni/Druze/etc) is registered with the government and is on your government issued id. I don't know if Iraq also has this info on government ids. In those countries, you might have to register with a masjid. Not sure.

Most countries don't include this info on government issued ids. So there is no need to register.

Wow, I thought only Nazi Germany had religious registration! I'd be paranoid about that, a bit.

Salam,

You may need a certificate of conversation in order to go to Mecca and Medina. I've heard about it before, but you can see people talking about it online.

Do "born muslims" have to prove it too? Or is your belief given to you at birth with your name?

You definitely need a conversation certificate. I went on Hajj with a revert who had to get a certificate from the local mosque as proof of conversion.

Frankly, I find that disturbing. No wonder a lot of "born muslims" don't trust reverts - their government sets an example of assuming they are liars unless proven to be truthful.

I'm not going anywhere that they clearly consider me a sinner before ever seeing me.

I imagine that they probably go by your name on paper.

I remember reading a thread on the forum in which the guards in Qom asked a convert to prove they were Muslim before letting them in and the person had to smooth things over with the guards for them. So it isn't only the Saudis who behave like that.

The ridiculous thing about the Saudi situation is that I have heard that they allow people in Mecca and Medina to hire non Muslims from the far East to work for them. So there are Christians from the Philippines living in those holy cities.

If that is true, I'm not going there either. I'll recite shahada right in front of them, if they require the same of everyone.

I can't tell you how many atheist or agnostic people of middle eastern or south Asian ancestry I've met in my life.

I understand where you are coming from, my mum is Irish and I've told that "I can't be Muslim in that case" and it is really hurtful. But in some cases, such as going to Hajj, 'Umra and Ziyara I think it is better to play the game and let Allah deal with those kinds of people.

I'm sure there are many instances in which reverts haven't had any issues going to Ziyara, so don't let hearsay put you off.

Salam there is many examples likewise  Youtube  Vlogs by foreign  tourists which they have visited Mashhad  & Qom without  being asked about their religious  belief anyway Qom still not a favorite place for tourists by european  looking appearance  which when they ask from guards which they can enter to Shrines & holy places which sometimes causes this misunderstanding  & bad behavior because of wrong understanding of guards.

That's the idiocy of the Al Saud Gangsters who rule Mecca, currently. There is nothing in the religion that says you need a 'certificate' like that.

I had to get one, because my legal name is not a Muslim name. If you go with a group to Hajj, the group leader usually takes care of it.

Exactly. And I'm certain that we are to take a Muslim at his or her word, not automatically assume he or she is a liar.
