Oh, look like blue eyes and blonde hair are the only human beings in the world, the rest are useless and must die. May allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) curse these racist losers.

More African students decry racism at Ukrainian borders

Quote

As at least half a million refugees flee Ukraine, more reports of mistreatment by Ukrainian border guards surface.

The Nigerian government also expressed concerns over reports of discriminatory behaviour, including a video widely shared on social media showing a Nigerian woman with her young baby being forcibly made to give up her seat to another person. It also said that a group of Nigerians had been refused entry into Poland – an allegation dismissed by Poland’s ambassador to Nigeria.

Barlaney Mufaro Gurure, a space engineering student from Zimbabwe, had finally reached the front of a nine-hour queue at Ukraine’s western border crossing of Krakovets after an exhausting four-day trip.

It was her turn to cross. But the border guard pushed her and four other African students she was travelling with aside, giving priority to Ukrainians. It took hours, and relentless demands, before they were also allowed to go through border control.

“We felt treated like animals,” the 19-year-old said in a phone interview from a Warsaw hotel. Gurure, a freshman at the National Aviation University, fled Kyiv hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine on February 24.

“When we left [Kyiv] we were just trying to survive,” she said. “We never thought that they would have treated us like that […] I thought we were all equal, that we were trying to stand together,” Gurure added.

They Called Ukraine Home. But They Faced Violence and Racism When They Tried to Flee

“We entered the train last,” Kass says, describing how she and other African women were forced to wait outside as snow was falling, while white women and children were allowed to board before them. She believes her gender is the only reason she was spared being beaten. Groups of Nepalese, Indian and Somalian men described to TIME how they were kicked and beaten with batons by Ukrainian guards who later begrudgingly allowed them to cross over, on foot.

Later, when Kass’s train stopped for 17 hours at the Polish border, she says Ukrainian train guards gave out bread and sausages to passengers. But they passed by Kass and her African friends. “By the time it was our turn, they threw us the ends of stale bread,” she says. After spending more than a third of her life in Ukraine, she felt let down. “It was a traumatic experience.

Now safely across the border, refugees of color were also dismayed by the continued preferential treatment for Ukrainians in the official Polish response and from ordinary Poles. On Tuesday night, NGO Humanity First Germany said members of its team were attacked by a group of Polish men in front of the Przemysl train station and told to “go back to their country”, Polish liberal news site OKO.press reported.

In recent years, Poland’s right-wing government has taken a hard line on asylum-seekers trying to enter the EU nation. This culminated in a showdown with neighboring Belarus over the winter, when the Polish army continually pushed back asylum seekers into a forested area in freezing temperatures. Over 20 people have died, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres.

Poland’s border guard has said it is welcoming all refugees from Ukraine, regardless of their nationality. But at the train station in Przemysl, Africans and Afghans were being forced back into lines for trains going west. “Unfortunately, Ukrainians are being given priority,” said Oscar Broz, a 30-year-old Polish volunteer. He said he advised foreign citizens to pretend they had lost their passports to be allowed onto Polish intercity trains. Polish authorities are “aware of some problems” surrounding access to official help for non-Ukrainian citizens, Marcin Sośniak, head of the Equal Treatment Department of the Human Rights Commissioner, said in written responses to questions from TIME.

“Ukrainians treated us alright as they saw us as money,” said Ashraf Muslim, a 23-year-old from Morocco, sitting on the curbside with his wife, dentistry student Lina Kuretta.

“The moment we became useless to them, they turned us into bums,” he said. Muslim and Kuretta spent 60 hours in their car at the border pleading with Ukrainian officials—in fluent Russian—to allow them to join the column of vehicles snaking out.

Nearby stood 22-year-old medical student Ahmed Mohamoud Abdullahi, who was trying unsuccessfully to call his parents in Somalia to let them know he was alive. His cell phone’s screen was smashed, the victim of the previous night’s skirmish with an armed Ukrainian border guard. He had arrived in Ukraine in December after an arduous visa process, and was just getting to grips with the language when the invasion began.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Africans face racial discrimination in Ukraine

Quote

In a statement on Monday, February 28, 2022, the government urged customs authorities in Ukraine and neighbouring countries to treat its citizens "with dignity" amid growing accusations of racism at the Ukrainian border.

Like hundreds of thousands of people, many Africans - mostly students - are trying to flee the Russian invasion of Ukraine by reaching neighbouring countries.

Black people living in the region say they have been left to languish, with some taking to Twitter in recent days to share accounts of abandonment.

A Nigerian medical student at Poland/Ukraine border (Medyka-Shehyni) told me she has been waiting 7hrs to cross, she says border guards are stopping black people and sending them to the back of the queue, saying they have to let 'Ukrainians' through first.

“My Nigerian friend told me before I got here; armed guards had ordered us to wait as Ukrainians had to be let through first”

“Right in front of me, I saw a few buses, which were full of white people” Eventually, few Africans were granted access to cross.

Asya, a medical student from Somalia studying in Kyiv, had a similar story. When she finally reached Poland, she said she was told, "Accommodation at the hotel was only for Ukrainians".

She is now safe in Warsaw, where she is staying in a hotel. In stark contrast to her experience at the border, she has found people in the city to be incredibly kind and welcoming.

All of the African and Asian students she has been in touch with have been offered free accommodation. She said the reception had been irresistible.

South Africa’s ambassador flees Kyiv, condemns discrimination

Quote

According to him, colleagues and other ambassadors had been working hard to secure a smooth exit of South Africans and other foreigners from Ukraine - some of whom have faced racism at they have tried to flee.

"We've heard all of these accusations, we've seen the videos and we are concerned... We've protested ourselves on an official level to the government and asked them to please help the students that are still coming through," he added.

South Africa’s ambassadors in both Poland and Hungary had also gone to the borders to help people get through, he said.

Part of the problem was that "initially, only Ukrainian women and children" were being allowed through - and as officials from Ukraine were sticking strictly to these instructions, this had impacted all the foreigners.

“It's just been a very terrible situation."

He condemned the discrimination, adding that bombs don’t discriminate.

Eastern European are very racist I’m from there and we were born Muslim cause there is a small Muslim community in these countries and they always hated us tried to ostracise us and even during Balkan war literally tried to commit genocide on our population ,half my family was killed , and these are not even practising muslims they just carry Muslim names don’t pray don’t fast literally live like them but stil they hate them, when my mother put on her hijab first time even the muslims were against her thought it was weird and strange and Arab forget the non Muslims , she got abused a lot for that till we left during war when it started , even her mother attacked her for it , later on she apologised and accepted that but what I’m trying to say is they’re so deeply rooted in their ways that it’s harder than steel

and we’ve been living there for generations it’s not like we came yesterday we’ve been there since Ottoman Empire but their hatred and intolerance is deeply rooted they even hate each other if their is a small difference like if one is a certain type of orthodox or catholic they ready to kill one another  hold grudges for generations, like they would try to kill someone from a certain demographic because of some historical event that happened 1000 years ago l

its insane they’re so close minded and miserable and full of hate it’s hard to believe they exist in 21st century

they are horrible horrible people honestly it’s sad but really they are like an incarnation of the worst human characteristics like racism and intolerance, the way they view muslims and Islamic countries they literally would nuke all Muslims and Muslims countries if given the power they’re almost worse than Israelis in some ways , trust me it’s unbelievable

There's also been blatant racism against Russians. A spa clinic in Germany publicly went out with a letter where they say they're not gonna serve Russian or Belorussian customers.

Normal Russian people are being discriminated in the same way that Muslims got discriminated after 9/11.

Britain announces that British people who house Ukrainian refugees will receive £350 (US$456) per month

I thought that sum would be higher, considering the cost of living in UK
