As salaam alaykum

I recently converted to Islam. I am in downtown Toronto. I am having a difficult time in finding any Shi'a centres here. I'm feeling somewhat lost because of this. I came to Islam through a relationship which has recently ended. He was my only connection to learning about Islam. Would anyone be able to suggest what I might do to connect to the Shi'a community here downtown? I am a Sister.

Shukran

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, All- Merciful, The  Gracious

ٱللَّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَجِّلْ فَرَجَهُمْ

O God, bless Muhammad and the Progeny of Muhammad, and hasten their alleviation

Peace and blessing of Allah may be upon you,

You have come to the center of learning and the root of it rises from the Prophet Muhammed (SAAS) and His Holy house (عليه السلام). The best way to learn is little by little with certainty and practising. There is no god but God, and Muhammed is the Messenger of God, and Ali ibn Abu Talib is the guardian of the faith and commander of the faithful. I have always found the best way to learn in peace and quietness of solitariness in the presence of Allah with contemplation and searching specific answers to specific matters considering Allah and the Prophets and meaning of life that is to do good and forbid the evil that is the worshipping Allah with knowledge and practising.

Holy Quran Sura As-Sur, 43, Sign of Allah, 23.

Such is the good news that Allah gives to His servants who have faith and do righteous deeds! Say, ‘I do not ask you any reward for it except the love of [my] relatives. Whoever performs a good deed, We shall enhance its goodness for him. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-appreciative.

That is my advice that you read the saying of Prophet Muhammed and learn the sayings. These are called narrations, or hadiths. The narrations are outside authority to confirm the reality of existence, the reality of the prophethood as well as the reality of imaamat as well as the signs of the Quran. The inner authority is your own self and your own intellect that will be purified by following the teaching of Muhammed (SAAS) if one submits to the good and forbids what is evil according to the decree of Allah what has been made. Allah is the Lord who Guides All.

The bird that leaves the nest for hunt and gather for building the nest, feeding the chicks and feeding one self gets guidance from their Creator. The bird flies to places where Allah guides and it will find naturally sustenance and everything it needs. The bird does it obligatory duties in the guidance of its Creator who had bestowed this life upon them. When it has done all it deeds it stays in the resting place in the peace and grace of its Creator. This is what patience means. To do what needs to be done no matter what in everyday life. Share what have been give by Allah to all in need. To be content and satisfied what Creator have destined and given. Give thanks to  Allah, The Generous, The Guide, do good, forbid evil, wait for the better, and believe good.

May Allah bless you and refresh you with prayer,

O Allah grant me wisdom in works such that I will see the difference of vain and necessary and grant me patience to hold from what I do not need and inspiration fulfil what is obligatory in times of peace and in times of hardship since the patience is the garden of the faith and I if I dont foster and take care of my patience I cant enjoy the fruits of the faith.

The good book of al-kafi is a very generous collection of hadith that I would recommend for anyone to read. The first parts are about the Oneness of Allah, the virtues of knowledge and merits of it and later parts about Prophet Muhammed (عليه السلام) and the Ahlulbayt (عليه السلام). There are also other sections.

The Messenger of God ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)&hp) has said, Seeking knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim. (People should) know that God loves those who seek knowledge.”2

Ask so that you would understand. Use your own questions and respect them so that you would receive guidance. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware, All-Merciful, The Gracious.

In faith to All-Mighty, I leave you.

ٱللَّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَجِّلْ فَرَجَهُمْ

O God, bless Muhammad and the Progeny of Muhammad, and hasten their alleviation

Walaikum assalam

First off, I pray that Allah gives you ease after your hardship as He has promised in Surah ash-Sharh:

Quote

94:5

[Shakir] Surely with difficulty is ease.

[Sahih International] For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

[Yusuf Ali] So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief:

94:6

[Shakir] With difficulty is surely ease.

[Sahih International] Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

[Yusuf Ali] Verily, with every difficulty there is relief.

The only mosque I found in the area was Toronto Islamic Centre, but that seems to be a Sunni mosque.

Anyway, like brother @Abdul Rahim al-Hasan said, you should expand your Islamic knowledge as much as possible. You don't necessarily need a mosque to do this, as there are many lectures on YouTube or books that you may buy to learn from.

For example, Sayed Ammar Nakshawani is my personal favourite when it comes to lecturing. He may come across as aggressive, but his content is really good.

There are many Shia YouTube channels like Ahlulbayt TVAl-Rasoul Islamic SocietyImam Hussein TV 3, and Noor Islamic Education.

I also found this video for reverts from a channel called Islamic Lessons Made Easy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULr7Igu77hc

Other than that, as a revert myself, something that really helped me is an app called Shia+ (website: https://shiaplus.app/)

The app is for iOS, so I'm not sure if it's available of Android if that's what you use, but it's a great app with prayer times, daily supplications and more.

If that's not for you, another great app is Shia Companion. It's the same kind of idea, although I do think Shia+ is better.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) give you patience in the period, may He reward you and give you Paradise, and may He solve all your problems by the rights of Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad

Guest Fellow Torontonian

Hey wasalaam,

I sent this message to someone on here some time back

Here is a list of some Shia Centres/Mosques in Toronto and the GTA and their social media outlets. Inshallah maybe connect to any of them you find appealing and then expand your network into the community that way:

1. The Jaffari Community Centre (Thornhill)

Website: https://jaffari.org/

Notes: English is the main language of communication. Majority of people are of Indian origin but who's ancestors have settled in Africa some generations back. However, you can find people of all backrounds here. The resident Islamic scholar is Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi and subhanallah he is a great scholar. He has his own website where he poublishes many important works/resources and also books. Free and for purchase: https://al-m.ca/event-shia-history/ (great website, has a list of halal restaurants in the GTA too!). Another great scholar who appears closely connected with Jaffari community is Shaykh Vinay Khetia, a very academic kind of scholar. A revert. Great speeches. Very qualified Islamic Scholar. Speaks at many places but more closely connected to Jaffari centre. (http://vinaykhetia.com/bio/).

HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU CHECK OUT THE YOUTH/ENGLISH COMMITTEE IG PAGE TO BE UP TO DATE ON GREAT UPCOMING EVENTS: https://www.instagram.com/mahdiyouth/?hl=en

Notes: Mainly Indian/Pakistani people. A lot of younger attendees who grew up in the West. Do quite a bit of English programs, especially in the Islamic months of Ramadan Muharam. Sayyid Asad Jaffari is the an cleric here for the english communit, he's a great speaker/orator and a very motivational and insightful lecturer.

 Youth Page: https://www.facebook.com/afghancanadians

7. I also suggest checking out this Shia Youth Club and perhaps attend their programs: https://www.instagram.com/tmautsc/?hl=en

Aside from these centres, consider exploring:

https://www.al-islam.org/ for many great books and translated texts on shia Islam

And also the YouTube channel of a scholar named Shaykh Mohammad Shomali, who's a very knowledgeable scholar from the UK - to learn more about Islam and specifically according to the Shia school of thought: https://www.youtube.com/user/safintunnajaah/playlists

And below is another wonderful learning outlet, splendid organization:

https://www.mizaninstitute.org/#

Their Facebook and Youtube (they post their vids and many diff lect series here):

https://www.facebook.com/Mizan.Institute1

https://www.youtube.com/c/MizanInstitute1/playlists

The scholars who run this are very qualified as well and they grew up in the West so are very relatable for people growing up here. The main two scholars who run this are Shaykh Amin Rastani and Shaykh Mahdi Rastani and they are also involved with Islamic Centres in the USA but post their programs online and do live programs:

Shaykh Amin content:
