This morning I was reading surah At-Taghabun and came upon this ayah, the translation mentioned stinginess of the soul and that picked my interest. I'm pretty curious about what it is and how does it affect us (spiritually, physically and mentally)?

If anyone knows please let me know, the surah and translation are down below.

(Sahih International)

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah ]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

-Surah At-Taghabun, Ayah 16

The translation you quoted uses the word 'soul' but the context of the Aya is referring to 'self', so it's one's greed/stinginess that is being referred to.

I would suggest you look into the following link with the Tafseer of the Aya from Ahlulbayt (عليه السلام) as it also includes narrations explaining the effects of one's stinginess.
