Sheikh Shomali has a series of lectures that covers most the fundamentals.

Strongly disagree. How can you debate about Islam when you have little to know knowledge of the two fundamental sources, ie Qur'an and hadith?

As for good polemicists, I don't know of any from either school of thought simply because the heavily publicized ones are usually bickering and rarely discussing.

Edit: actually I want to mention our late brother @toyibonline, Toyib Olawuyi who has done some great research in the field of Shia-Sunni polemics

I agree to a point for layman.

But debates should be limited to fundamentals of faith not a complete prevention of debating. As this is something every Muslim needs to be able to arrive at without blind following.

So everyone should be able to explain and defend their aqeeda.

I fully agree brother. Understanding the fundamentals and general principles is of course essential and each one of us must be aware of this. 

What I find problematic is when people jump into debates without mastering the subject they are debating. They rely on narrations without knowing of their authenticity and bring forward verses without knowing their context.

Another name that comes to mind is Sayyid Kamal al Haidari. Around ten years ago or so his programs on this topic had a huge impact in the arab world.
