Dear Shias and Sunnis,

I have a few questions for you guys.

I was a practicing sunni Muslim now I am not sure whether my religion is right. I want you to answer me the best you can.

1. Why did prophet married a nine year old girl

2. According to shia and many sunni he knew the unseen then why on earth did he married a girl who will fight his son in law in future

As salaamu alaikum.

It was not unusual for women to marry at relatively young ages back then. In fact, even if you go back 100 odd years in time to the 19th century, 13-15 was a normal marriage age for women.

As for the second point, our belief is that knowledge of the unseen is with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى), of which He can of course grant parts of to whoever He wills including the prophet ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)).

Also another thing to add, coming from a more Shia perspective, the controversial Sunni hadiths involving Prophet Muhammad((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) and Aisha are not accepted by us Shias and marriage is a contract, you and your spouse set up a contract of what things to work on in a marriage, and sometimes, one of these things is not having sex.

Feel free to correct me.

You can get the idea of the source of Prophet's knowledge from the case where this same 9 year old was plotting with another wife of Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and when Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) revealed their plot to Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) told her, she said in astonishment:

مَنْ أَنبَأَكَ هَذَا

(Who informed you this?)

Infact lot of verses of Quran mentioning the fact that it is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) who reveals the knowledge of unseen to Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)

12:102

So the question whether Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) knew that this 9 year old girl would fight war with his successor has two possible answers:

1. No, he don't know anything about it in advance.

2. Yes, he knew, but since it is the will of God, so he submitted to the divine will.

I have kept the possibility of 2nd answer by keeping the fact that God certainly knew that what this 9 year old girl will do in future, yet He allowed Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) to marry her. So whether Prophet knew or not becomes irrelevant.

33:37) But when Zaid had accomplished his want of her, We gave her to you as a wife

The brothers have all given good answers.

I'll just give a different angle.

When non Muslim bring up the Prophets marriage they try to paint a picture of perversion ( astaghfurullah).

So let's just examine. The Prophet married and older woman and married no other in his first marriage. This was when he was young and did not have all the open enmity. He was a very very respected person of the Quraish. He could have married any one and as many as he liked. He could have led a promiscuous life style. He didn't..... this should remove any doubts of the idea of a perverse or lustful man.(Astaghfurullah)

Assalamu aleikum,

Quote

1. Why did prophet married a nine year old girl

Asma’ was fourteen years of age during the first year of the Prophetic mission (biʿthah) and ten years older than A’yshah. Therefore, A’yshah was four years old during the first year of the Prophetic mission [14 – 10 = 4] and as such, she was seventeen years of age during the thirteenth year of the Prophetic mission [4 + 13 = 17]. In the month of Shawwal of the second year of the Hijrah (the year of her official wedding to the Prophet) she was nineteen years of age [17 + 2 = 19].

On the other hand, Asma’ was a hundred years of age during the seventy-third year after Hijrah. A hundred minus seventy-three equals twenty-seven (100 – 73 = 27). Therefore, in the first year after the Hijrah she was twenty-seven years old.

Asma’ was ten years older than A’yshah. Twenty-seven minus ten equals seventeen (27 – 10 = 17).

Therefore, A’yshah was seventeen years of age during the first year of the Hijrah. [In addition to this], we previously established that A’yshah was officially wed the Prophet during the month of Shawwal of the second year after Hijrah, meaning that A’yshah was nineteen years of age [17 + 2 = 19] when she was wed to the Messenger of Allah.

Accordin to Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Husayni al-Qazwinis book linked above the calculations deduct from hadith sources that Aisha was 19 years old when she married to Prophet Muhammed (SAAS).

Prophets dont know everything about the future. In Quran the story of Yunus (عليه السلام) share details about the concept of al-bada where whole sociaty repents after their own prophet had left the city (عليه السلام).

"إن الله لا يغيّر ما بقوم حتى يغيّروا بأنفسهم."

“Indeed Allah does not change a people’s lot, unless they change what is in their souls.”1

In the the Book "The Shia Rebuts" Sayyid Rida Husayni Nasab wrotes when answering to the question "What is bada’ and why do you believe in it?":

In Arabic, the word “bada’” literally means “manifestation” and “appearance”, and in the parlance of Shi‘ah scholars it applies to the change in the natural course of someone’s destiny as a result of his or her righteous and wholesome behavior. "

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said, "None of the prophets became prophets until they admitted five characteristics for God: bada', providence, prostration (sujud), divinity, and His obedience."[6] In another hadith from Imam al-Sadiq (a), we read, "No bada' occurs for God except that it is already in His knowledge."

You are correct that we don't refer to sunni narrations since we have our own. However we do also have narrations indicating that A'isha was of a young age (10, if I recall correctly) at the time of her marriage.

Assalamu aleikum,

As mentioned according to  Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Husayni al-Qazwini Aisha was 19 years old when she married Prophet Muhammed (SAAS).

The method uses different hadiths asa reference to calculate the age of Aisha.

Here is the link for the books English translation:

Bismillahi Irrahman Irrahiim

Allahumma salli Alaa Muahmmed wa Aali Muhammed wa ajzel farajahum

Assalamu aleikum,

Acording to  Sayed Mohammad Al-Musawi,

The science of men and narration leads with this claim that Aisha was 9 years old to narrator called  Hisham Ibn O'rwah Ibnal-Zubair.

This is what he says about him:

Quote

There is a false but famous narration in some Sunni books which claims that
Ayesha was a child ( between six and nine years) when she got married
with the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). This narration is fabricated even
according to many Sunni scholars because of :

1. The narrator is just one single person who is Hisham Ibn O'rwah Ibn
al-Zubair
who claimed narrating from Ayesha. Ayesha died on year 57 or
year 58 after Hijra, while Hisham Ibn O'rwah was born in year 61 after
Hijra. How can he claim narrating from her when she dies few years
before his his birth?

2. Hisham Ibn O'rwah is not an authentic narrator according to many
Sunni scholars including Al-Soyooti who included his name with the
list of Mudalliseen ( those who mix and hide the reality in their
narrations) ( Asmaa' al- Mudalliseen). Other leading Sunni scholars
like Malik Ibn Anas , Al-Midyani and many others refuse the narrations
of Hishan Ibn O'rwah.

3. There are certain historic facts in Sunni books prove that the age
of Ayesha was between 20 to 30 or even more when her marriage with the
Proohet (SAWA) took place:

3A. Asmaa' Bint Abi Bakr , the elder sister of Ayesha was elder then
her at least few years. Some Sunni scholars said few years and said
ten years. Asmaa' Bint Abi Bakr was born 27 years before the Bi'thah
of the Prophet (SAWA) ( Majma' al-Zawa'id, V. 9, P. 260, Omdatul Qaari
Fi Sharh Saheeh al-Bukhari, V. 2, P. 93, al-Majma' al-Kaberi by
Al-Tabarani , V. 24, P. 77 and many others. This means that when the
Prophet (SAWA) migrated from Makkah to Madinah after 13 years , the
age of Asmaa' Bint Abi Bakr was 40 years. As the of Ayesha was few
years ( or maximum ten years ) younger than her sister Asmaa', then
the age of Ayesha when the Prophet ( SAWA) migrated to Madina was not
less than thirty years.

As the marriage took place two years after Hijra, then the age of
Ayesha was then more than thirty years.

4. It is also worth mentioning that the well known Sunni Historian
Muhammad Ibn Sa'ad in His famous book Al-Tabaqaat al-Kubra (8: 9)
narrated from Abdullah Ibn Maleekah that when the Prophet ( SAWA)
proposed to Ayesha, Abu Baki ( her father) told him: I have given her
for marriage to Jubair Ibn Mut'im, so, let me take her back from him,
and he took her back from him by divorce, then gave her to the Prophet
( SAWA) for marriage.
It is also mentioned  in history that Ayesha had a son from her first
marriage called Abdullah, that is why she was called by the Prophet by
the name of her son Abdullah as Umm Abdillah. ( Sunan Abi Dawood).

Sunni scholars in Islamic Studies Centre in Cairo have refuted the widely spread narration about A'isha age and said that the age of Aisha when she got married to the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) was not less than 19 years. (Al-Yawm Al-Saabi' 10-10-2008).

Wassalam.
