Lawrence of Arabia regrets ...

Quote

TE Lawrence was “continually and bitterly ashamed” of the betrayal of the Middle East following the Arab revolt in which he became a British national hero, according to a chapter in his book The Seven Pillars of Wisdom which he decided to remove before publication.

In the excised chapter, Lawrence writes: “For my work on the Arab front I had determined to accept nothing. The cabinet raised the Arabs to fight for us by definite promises of self-government afterwards. Arabs believe in persons, not in institutions. They saw in me a free agent of the British government, and demanded from me an endorsement of its written promises. So I had to join the conspiracy, and, for what my word was worth, assured the men of their reward.

“In our two years’ partnership under fire they grew accustomed to believing me and to think my government, like myself, sincere. In this hope they performed some fine things but, of course, instead of being proud of what we did together, I was continually and bitterly ashamed.”

Official: Iran, Russia sign $6.5 billion in gas deals

Quote

About $6.5 billion from a memorandum with Russian energy giant Gazprom has been converted into a firm contract, a senior Iranian official says.

“God willing, the rest of the memorandum worth $40 billion will be converted into contracts in the next month, and the negotiations are ongoing,” deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy Mehdi Safari was quoted as saying Monday.

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Gazprom signed the $40 billion memorandum in July on the day Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Tehran for a summit with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts.

Under the agreement, Gazprom will help NIOC in the development of the Kish and North Pars gas fields and also six oil fields. The Russian gas producer will also be involved in the completion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects and construction of gas export pipelines.

As Salamu Alaykum guys,

Has anyone heard about this?

U.S. concerned about Iranian threats to Saudi Arabia

https://www.reuters.com/world/us-concerned-about-threats-iran-against-saudi-arabia-2022-11-01/

Supposedly Saud has gone to the US warning about some imminent attack by Iran towards the kingdom. I'm sure I read another article somewhere saying it's a planned attack on infrastructure. This story seems to have gained some traction on Reddit too.

Iran has literally become enemy number 1 in the West right now

This has been showing up in European and US media. Sounds completely crazy to me

I really hope there isn't some false-flag attack planned, followed by Saudi & US military action against Iran. That would be catastrophic.

There would be riots here in the US

Iran debunks Western media rhetoric about possible ‘attack’ on Saudi Arabia

The spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, Nasser Kan'ani, rejected a report published by the US-based daily Wall Street Journal about threats from Iran against Saudi Arabia. He said the report was biased and part of psychological warfare against the Islamic Republic.

“Such biased news stories are cooked up by certain Western and Zionist outlets with an aim to poison the atmosphere against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and buck the current positive trends [of growing relations] with regional countries,” Kan'ani said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran pursues the policy of good neighborliness with its neighbors on the basis of mutual respect, and within the framework of international principles and rules."

Moscow reveals how many countries want to join BRICS

Quote

More than a dozen countries have expressed an interest in joining the BRICS group, which incorporates some of the world’s major emerging economies, as the bloc gains more global standing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.
...
“The interest in this global association is very, very high and continues to grow,” he said. He confirmed that “more than a dozen” countries are eager to join, including Algeria, Argentina, and Iran.

However, Lavrov continued, before accepting any new members, BRICS intends to reach an agreement on criteria and principles for further potential expansion.

“Given that applications are already being submitted officially, we, of course, expect that harmonization of the criteria and principles for the expansion of BRICS won’t take too long,” he said.
...
The bloc is also expected to consider adding Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt and Afghanistan.

With Netanyahu back in charge, is a solo Israeli strike against Iran in the cards?

Quote

Just days after Netanyahu’s political rebirth, one of his closest political associates said that the military option will be on the table for the new government.

Quote

Tzachi Hanegbi a minister in the last Netanyahu government said in a Nov. 4 interview with Channel 12 that Netanyahu “would act, in my perspective, to destroy the nuclear facilities in Iran” if Israel feels that Iran is going to achieve a nuclear weapon. “In my assessment, he’ll have no choice but to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities like previous prime ministers ordered to destroy a nuclear facility in Iraq in 1981 and like an order was given in 2007 to destroy the nuclear facility in Syria,”

Quote

The big question around any Israeli attack on Iran is what role, if any, the US would play. When Netanyahu was last in power and Donald Trump was president in Washington, there was more expectation that the US might support a first-strike in Iran.

Quote

The second question is whether a military operation launched by Israel could actually stop the Iranians from achieving military nuclear capability, and whether Israel is prepared for the almost certain retaliation by Iran that would come afterwards.

Thousands of Iranians died of COVID-19 due to U.S. sanctions: official

Quote

A top Iranian human rights official on Sunday blamed U.S. sanctions that deny Iranians access to essential medicines for thousands of deaths in the country during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kazem Gharibabadi, secretary of the Iranian High Council for Human Rights and deputy chief of the Iranian Judiciary for international affairs, made the remarks while speaking to Iranian media in New York, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported...
"We see that those countries that consider themselves human rights advocates, particularly the United States and some other Western states, are extensively violating such rights in their own territories or in other countries. We maintain that these states are in no way eligible for being the flagbearers of human rights," he noted.

According to the Iranian Health Ministry, nearly 7,560,000 people have so far been infected with the coronavirus in the country, of which 144,609 have died of the disease.

Greek protesters burn US flag on Polytechnic uprising anniversary

Quote

Greek protesters burned the American flag on Thursday during popular marches on the streets of the capital Athens, in commemoration of the forty-ninth anniversary of the student uprising against the US-backed military rule in 1973.

The demonstrations culminated in front of the US Embassy, in protest of Washington's support for the Greek military dictatorship during the Cold War, with protesters chanting slogans demanding the exit of NATO from Ukraine.

The marches were led by a group of demonstrators carrying bloodstained Greek flags, while about five thousand police officers were deployed on the streets of the capital following confrontations with protesters.

Some 5,500 people marched in the capital under the supervision of security forces, as violence often broke out on the sidelines, the police said.

the trajectory of ... political Islam, or Islamism, can be traced in the Sunni sphere from Ottoman Istanbul

Quote

European secular nationalism - especially Auguste Comte’s anti-religion positivism - spread throughout various elite groups of Ottoman society in the late 19th century, not least the military, setting the scene for a showdown with clerics and devout intellectuals after the Young Turk revolution of 1908.

https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/turkey-ottoman-secret-history-political-islam?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Social_Traffic&utm_content=ap_3ifqkj8h6s

Article provides some interesting historical insights:

Quote

Until the abolition of the caliphate in 1924, the Ottoman Islamist lobby held out hope that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk would lean into Islamic faith and institutions to shore up identity and legitimacy in the new state.

The most prominent figures then fled abroad as sharia courts were closed, Arabic script was banned and the call to prayer rendered in Turkish - winning, of course, western praise.

Indonesia bans fornication

Quote

Indonesia’s parliament has approved legislation that outlaws sex outside marriage while making other sweeping changes to the criminal code – a move critics deemed a setback to freedoms in the world’s third-largest democracy.

The code, which will apply to Indonesians and visiting foreigners alike, will also prohibit cohabitation between unmarried couples. The changes also provides punishments for insulting the president.
