Salaam,

I know this may seem like a simple and silly question, but I just want to know if you guys can confirm the correct way to wipe the feet during wudu.

I want to know if I should first place my hand on the tip of my finger and then wipe the rest of the foot up to the ankles, as shown in the left, or do I begin a little before, just on top of the nails ?

Because according to Sayyid al-Sistani:

Ruling 251. After wiping the head, one must wipe the upper part of the feet with the wetness of the wuḍūʾ water that has remained on his hands. The area that must be wiped is from the tip of one of the toes to the ankle; and based on obligatory precaution, wiping the feet up to the raised part in the middle of the foot [before the ankle] will not suffice. And the recommended precaution is that one should wipe the right foot with the right hand and the left foot with the left hand.

But he also says:

Ruling 253. With regard to the wiping of the feet, it is not necessary for one to place his hand on the tips of the toes and to then draw his hand to the back of the foot; rather, one can place his whole hand on his foot and draw it back a little.

I've also seen many videos where the individual doing wudu doesn't necessarily start with the tips, rather they do like the image on the right.

So which method is correct ? Or are they both okay ?

I have also seen people wipe the feet starting from the top of the nails. However, I do not believe this is correct. You are required to wipe from the tip of the toe. If you look at the videos of how Al-Sayyid As-Sistani and Al-Sayyed Al-Khoei perform wudu', they wipe from the tip of the toe (the image on the left which you presented).

This ruling means that you can place the entire hand on the foot such that the fingers are laid on the tip of the toes and then you can draw your hand a bit in a way such that it can be said that the entire foot has been wiped.

Haha this post made me laugh because I also drew a diagram on this exact same question before, and sent it to a Shaykh.

And yeah, you are not supposed to wipe just the top surface of the foot, you have to start wiping from the tips of the toes (the surface of the toes that are roughly perpendicular to the floor if that helps lol)
