In Hadiths

There is a hadith from Imam al-Sadiq (a) according to which, "if a person frequently asks for divine forgiveness, the list of his or her deeds will rise (on the Day of Resurrection) while shining."[9]

And Zurara quotes Imam al-Sadiq (a) as saying that "when a person commits a sin, he or she has a deadline until the end of night; if he or she asks for divine forgiveness, the sin will not be recorded [in the list of his or her deeds]."[10]

Repeated Repentance and Istighfar
Imam Ja’far Sadiq ((عليه السلام).) said,

“The Holy Prophet (S) was reciting Istighfar hundred times a day and was praying for his Maghfirat (salvation) though he had not committed a single sin.”8

It is also mentioned by him,

“The more one prays for pardoning of his sins the more good deeds will be credited to his account and on the Day of Judgement his deeds will appear shining.”9

Imam Riďa ((عليه السلام).) says,

“The example of Istighfar is like that of a leaf trembling and making noise in the air. The one who recites Istighfar but does not stop sinning makes a mockery of God.”10

Imam Ja’far Sadiq ((عليه السلام).) says,

The Holy Prophet (S) never got up even from the smallest meeting without reciting Istighfar 25 times.11

Another Hadith mentions,

“The Holy Prophet (S) recited ‘Astahghfirullah Wā tūbo ilaih’ seventy times everyday.”

Saiyyid bin Tawūs, in his book Nahj ud-Dāwāt writes that the Holy Prophet (S) has said that a man who is inflicted by poverty and hardship should recite ‘Astahghfirullah Wā tūbo ilaih’ thirty thousand times. The Lord Almighty will surely end his troubles. The narrator says this has been proved true by experience.

Countless!!!

We cannot perhaps count the benefits. Here are some of its benefits as mentioned in Chapter Nuh of Quran:

"Then I said, Ask forgiveness of your Lord, surely He is the most Forgiving:

He will send down upon you the cloud, pouring down abundance of rain:

And help you with wealth and sons, and make for you gardens, and make for you rivers"

Holy Quran 71:10-12

So you can see its benefits spreads all over from sending clouds to rain to wealth to offspring. And the benefits which we do not see, makes this dhikr among the best dhikr of every pious person.

Wassalam!

Salam. Astaghfirullah Rabbi wa  atooboo ilayh. 70 or 100 times is good.

Please, how did you keep track of how many istighfar you did? Pen and paper? Tasbih?

O He who has accustomed His servants to the acceptance of their repeated turning!
O He who reformed their corruption through repentance
O He who was satisfied from their deeds with little
O He who rewarded their little with much
O He who guaranteed for them the answering of prayer
O He who promised them, by His grace, a good reward
