:salam:

Dates are very common in most Muslim households, and especially in the month of Ramadhan. I recently began thinking about the different types of dates there are, and there are so many types that it really makes you want to try all of them!

I am no expert in dates, but my personal favourite is definitely the 'Ajwah (عجوۃ) kind. I really like how it's sweet but not too sweet, isn't too soft, and it's skin doesn't just easily fall off the flesh of the fruit. I have mostly had Pakistani varieties of dates, and honestly, 'Ajwah is just the best. Alhumdulillah.

So what about the people of ShiaChat, what do you all think? What's your favourite variety of date fruit?

JazakAllah

Iranian Mozafati and Jordan/Palestinian Mejhoul (also cultivated in California) are my favorites.

Salam,

The mejdool dates from South Africa are also pretty tasty, all in all the Iranians ones may be slightly better because they are so cheap, but the quality can be hit and miss. Quite a few times, especially in summer, they become kind of alcoholic in the heat, because they are so sweet. But I tend to go with the mejdool because they are more chewy and I'm less likely to eat the whole box.

Apart from those two types, I don't get the hype with all these other types of dates, they are nice, but not as special as people make out. Although apparently most countries tend not to export their best dates, so if you go to Medina (for example) the dates will be better than the Medina dates you get in Europe.

I don't find the Iranian ones to be so cheap, at least not as Algerian or Tunisian ones. Here a box of 500g of Mozafati is about 4€ whereas for North African ones you would get 1kg.

What's annoying is that merchants do not always keep them refrigerated as they should, which creates some kind of crystal from the sugar in them.

I've seen them for under 2 euros for half a kilo, but the refrigeration is a big problem with them, it is because they are so sweet that they get affected so much by the heat.

I've been enjoying dry figs quite a bit recently, that are nowhere near as nice as dates, but they are quite pleasant to eat.

I love the one which is soft, sticky and sugary. I don’t know what we call it.

Believe it or not I've never eaten a date in my life. It wasn't something that was ever in my household growing up. Apricots and prunes, definitely but not dates.
