May God bless you durring this month and may you meet with God in a new and living way.

I’m fasting today to avoid any issues of start date and why not if it’s free thwaab. Also well said you really don’t lose anything, just consider it the last day of Shaban and all is well.

In the Name of the Most High Praise be to Allah Lord of the worlds and peace and blessings be upon Mohammad and his pure household According to the announcement from the office of H. E. Ayatullah

I see where it says USA, but it also specifically mentions west coast later on? I know the Council here in USA that is followed by many Sunnis are observing the month of Ramadhan today, Tuesday because of eyewitness reports in California.

I’m not sure at all, but it may boil down to who your marja is and what they believe in regard to moon sighting and sharing horizons.

Brother, that was the email that I got, but I fasted today as یوم الشک. It means if it was Ramazan, I fasted today. If it wasn't, I fasted as the last day of the holy month of Shaban.

Here is the rule. Always fast last day as یوم الشک. You don't lose anything. That's what I do every year

Fun fact: Our Sunni brethren say it's prohibited to fast on Yawm ul-shakk because "you can't just add a day to the Month of Ramadan". They day before the month of Ramadan has to stay fast-less to make clear the beginning of the Month.

Based on this map, which is reliable, it is possible for the moon to be seen with the Naked Eye in Southern California, and Most of Mexico Monday Night, if perfect conditions. I'm not sure if the moon was actually seen in Southern California last night. I didn't see the moon in that picture that was posted above.

I think they go by sighting anywhere in the country where they live. Some Sunnis go by "sighting" in Saudi Arabia, which is often a day or two before sighting is physically possible anywhere on earth.

Based on this wouldn’t it be only fasting for those regions and not necessarily everyone in N America. That’s what I am getting from this statement from IMAM site:

“For the believers residing in Southern California and regions in the vicinity, there is a very low possibility of sighting the crescent moon in San Diego during the sunset of Monday, April 12th. If sighted, this would make Tuesday the beginning of the month for those areas only.

Please note, a sighting in those regions will not change the start of the month for believers who reside in other parts of North America unless one emulates a jurist who establishes the beginning of the lunar month based on the sharing of the horizon of the same night (e.g., the late Sayyid al-Khoei).”

It depends on which marjaa you follow. If you follow Sayyid Al Khoei, then, well you already said it in your post.  Also, Sayyid Fadlallah declared, I think quite a while ago that today, April 13th, is the first day of Ramadan.

For followers of Sayyid Sistani, if you saw the moon last night or there are just witnesses who saw it, then today is the first day or Ramadan for you. If you are not fasting, you should change your niyyat and start, or fast ihtiyyat with the niyyat of Youm As Shaqq (first day of Ramadan based on precaution). For followers of Sayyid Ali Khameni, I"m not sure what to do. Maybe someone else can post that. He declared Wednesday as the first day or Ramadan for those in Iran.

In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The Holy Prophet ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)&hp) is reported to have said: “Whoever provides iftar [food for breaking the fast] of a fasting person in it [the month of Ramadan], will be granted forgiveness for his sins.”

[Al-Burujurdy, Jami ahadith al-Shia, vol. 9. p. 268]

Just to add brother,

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn abu Nasr from Hisham ibn Salim from Sa‘d who has said the following:

“Once, we eight people were in the presence of Abu Ja’far Imam Muhammmad Al Baaqir (عليه السلام).

We spoke of Ramadan.

The Imam (عليه السلام) said, ‘You must not say, “This is Ramadan or Ramadan is gone or Ramadan has come.” Ramadan is one of the names of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, which does not come or go. What comes or goes is what is not durable. You instead should say, “The month of Ramadan.” The word “month” in this case is used in a possessive case in relation to the noun, the “name,” the name that is the name of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious. This month is the one when the Holy Quran was revealed, and He has made it a festival and an example."

Al-Kāfi, Volume 4, the book of fasting, chapter of the prohibition of saying 'ramadhan' instead of the month of ramadhan.

:salam:

Just would like some help here. I often read Ramadan means scorching or burning heat in Arabic. I also read a common aramaic root means ashes, a holiday Christians also celebrated.

So how could these relate to a name of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) ? We read the hadith but no explanation comes with it.

2. "Ramadan"«رمضان» from "Ramiz"«رمیض» means cloud and rain at the end of the summer solstice and the beginning of the autumn season, which dissipates the summer heat. For this reason, this month is called "Ramadan", which washes the bodies of people from sins. [4]

3. "Ramadan" is derived from "رمضت النصل ارمضه رمضاً"; That is, they put a spear between two stones and struck it to make it thin. [5] In this sense, Ramadan; That is, man puts himself in the midst of divine obedience so that his soul becomes soft and ready for servitude.

@Ashvazdanghe Dear brother, since you live in IRI can you let us know as soon as you get the information about Eid for muqallids of Rahbar? I would like to know if they will celebrate Salatul Eid tomorrow in Europe.

I follow Sayid Fadlallah but since they have no representation here, it would be nice to offer salat with them.

Have a blessed holy day by the grace of Allah Almighty.
