Any value for learning MSA?

I signed up for premium access to arabpod101.com. The course I'm working on is Modern Standard Arabic. They have also dialect courses. Is there any value studying modern standard arabic for the sake of learning some forms of communication with arab speakers and also reading of current events?

Yes certainly it is beneficial because a good grasp of classical Arabic is essential for understanding the Qur'an and the hadith.

In terms of communication it is also the most universal form of arabic.

I'm currently on the language learning journey, and something I recently experienced is that it's worth leaning Arabic purely and solely for the Quran. People would say things like that and I'd say "Yeah of course" but I didn't really understand what they meant until I got a personal taste of its glory. It's like describing all the wonderful foods we have to a 15th century peasant, he'd get what you're saying and agree it's delicious, but he wouldn't know what you mean until he actually tastes it. From what I've seen, people in America spea

 

Sorry for that unrelated response but to specifically answer your question: Yes it's worth it because all Arabic languages have a base in MSA. If you learn MSA, then you can pick up dialects very quickly. And it is especially important for reading current events because MSA is the preferred language of the news media.
